He was an overrated player by fans that love the "true PG" archetype.

He was a small unathletic guard that had to rely on pace, committing no mistakes and his 3pt shot.

And that isn't something to depend on if a team wants him to be a starter or a significant contributor year after year.

He did a decent job while a member of the Suns, but I'd think he would have done more to showcase his talents given he was in a contract year. Didn't really pay too much attention to his stats as of late and how ass the happen to be.

Yeah sometimes you lose gambles on yourself. Still rather be around people who have the guts to consider believing in themselves when it's reasonable to do so. Never understood why sports fans seem to take pleasure in players being wrong and losing money (and it's not like Tyus seems like an a-hole or anything irl).

Im not laughing at him but just pointing out hes the Anti-Fred for now. I loved him in Memphis and am just assuming hes having a slow start. I doubt he forgot how to play basketball. .

Yeah he reportedly "Turned down a bigger $$ offer from Detroit because hew wanted to play for a playoff team"...

I think his signing for Phoenix was the cherry on top for Phoenix after the Beal trade that pushed that team into complete collapse last year. KD and Booker both had poor defensive ratings the team checked out in part due to them promising Tyus a starting role so he'd accept a minimum deal to go there.

He looks like he has lost a step athletically and he was never all that athletic by NBA standards to begin with. Now he can't get past defenders at all and even when he has had a step on the defence after a steal he has been unable to finish because the defenders easily catch up to him. He hasn't gotten to the line even once this season.

He also has no confidence in his shot whatsoever currently, he keeps passing when he is open.

There has to be some kind of injury the media doesn't know about. 29-year olds dont just fall completely off the map like this. Monstars stole his powers level stuff here.

Also, why does it feel like every guard (temporarily) forgets how to shoot once they sign with Orlando? Last year KCP (although second half of the season was way better), this year Tyus and Bane (but he's already on an upward trend).

Oddly enough KCP looks worse in Memphis than he did in Orlando so playing for the Magic isn't an excuse for him.

This does explain it quite thoroughly.

To be fair to him, I have no clue what Orlando is doing with him.

He’s your classic pass first PG. But for some reason Orlando brought him in to play him in an off ball role. So his poor shooting makes sense because his entire basketball career has been getting his rhythm on ball.

But now he’s basically just playing as a tiny off ball guard. Which is really the worst way to play him.

I thought the plan was to bring him in, so when one of Paolo/Franz sits, Tyus would come in and help run the offense and get guys some easier shots. But again he’s come in and they’ve basically just played him as a 6’1 off ball catch and shoot guy.

Phoenix stuck him in a similar role a lot of the time, always allowing Booker, Beal, or even KD to initiate before Jones did. He still managed to look vaguely like himself.

It's very strange. Jones isn't just struggling with his shot. He's struggling to do anything. 1.4ppg and 1.4apg! 25%fg and 10% from 3. Zero free throw attempts. It's not just a minutes thing either. Like he's wayyyyy off the map and this can't be something as simple as role adjustment, right?

But that’s the thing, even in PHX people were saying PHx was using him wrong. He still had 20+ front court touches a game and time per possession of 4.4.

In ORL he’s getting just 11 front court touches a game and a Time Per Possession of 1.8.

He’s playing a strictly off ball role to even degrees we didn’t come close to seeing in PHX. Again to put this into perspective. On a team that had Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal (all played 50+ games), Tyus still got 20+ touches and a Time Per Possession of 4+. On an Orlando team that has struggled with offense, Tyus still isn’t playing on ball half as much as he did with PHx.

And ya I think you can say part of it is him off to a bad start. But I don’t think we can overlook the fact that his entire basketball life he’s been an on ball facilitator. He gets his rhythm being on ball. He’s also not some stud player either, he’s pretty limited in what he does, but he’s damn god usually at his game. He’s now being asked to play nothing like his entire basketball life. He’s a specialist asking to play a completely different role.

To use another Dukie as an example. This would be like someone signing JJ Redick when he was in the middle of his career and basically saying, “You know how you’re an off ball catch and shoot specialist, let’s switch things up. I’m going to put you as our lead ball handler and ask you to be a pass first guy.” Redick would be god awful in that role.

I just don’t think it’s smart to sign a specialist, then ask him to do the complete opposite of his specialty and expect it to turn out well.
