Basically 0% chance he leaves money on the table. Anyway, local reporting has them getting close to a deal to (over) pay him

Duren is just running out the clock hoping that Langdon panics or blinks and ups the ante. I dont expect anything to happen for 3 more weeks. If Langdon ups the ante he will sign or he will run out the clock and then sign the offer.

Does this impact future extension?

Will they all have to be in September now on?

Restricted free agent center Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons remain far apart in contract negotiations. Duren is reportedly looking for more than $40 million per season, while Detroit is offering a five-year deal at an average of $35 million per season. That's caused things to drag between the two side, with no sense that anything will change soon.

Duren is coming off an All-NBA season. The 22-year-old center qualified for a contract starting at up to 30% of the cap by earning the All-NBA honor. That deal would pay Duren $287 million over five years at an average of $57.4 million per season.

Despite qualifying for the bigger contract, Duren doesn't seem focused on pushing for even a 25% of the cap max, which would average more than $47.8 million per season. Instead, he's looking at a deal that would come in somewhere near $200 million in total and average around $40 million per season.

If they're really at a stalemate between 5/200 and 5/175 it feels like a deal gets done sometime before training camp.

Yeah it does seem like the sides are closing in on a deal.

Player Option helps Duren here. I wonder if they can make it flat so Duren gets more money early.

Yeah it feels like there's enough non-monetary levers to make something happen (frontloaded vs. backloaded, player vs. team option) even if they won't budge on the overall $ amount.

I really don't get it.

We haven't really seen any reporting that suggests the QO is something he's even willing to do. So I'm not sure why we're still sitting here in a staring contest. They don't believe you're gonna do it Duren. So either take what they're offering or prove them wrong and take the QO- if you're willing.

Those are your 2 choices. Option A and Option B.

It absolutely does not make sense if the Pistons are putting $35M a year on the table as is being reported. He'd have to believe he's a near-max player next offseason.

The other problem with $35 AAV is it probably isn't extendable for a max extension in 3-4 years.

It just kind of feels like he's sitting on his hands beause he doesn't like those options. At some point reality needs to set in.

I get that guys aren't necessarily looking objetively at themselves or their careers, but it's just hard to empathize with him if he genuinely believed he was worth the 5/287 that he thought he was.

I get that he's PROBABLY not asking for that much anymore, but the fact that this was his genuine starting point is probably why we have so many problems.

The moment that All-NBA nod was juxtaposed with that awful playoff performance a massive gap in perceived value was inevitable. For the record, I don't have him at 5/287 even IF he hadn't laid an egg in the playoffs. But the playoff egg made the gap all the bigger. Him making All NBA was a bad thing, as it turns out. I don't love the 65 rule on that basis alone. The All NBA nod would imply he's a top 15 player, and he probably believes that about himself. But how many objetctive observers even have him in the top 30? And why is it possible for someone so far out of the top 15 to be All-NBA?

Final question- why is someone who snuck into the All-NBA Third team due to injuries and other systemic flaws eligable for the same max contract as someone coming off an rookie deal who's already an MVP candidate? If we'd given Duren the max he'd actually be making MORE than Cade Cunningham- our franchise player. That's just a messed up system.

I don't know, depending on the outcome of the Clipper investigation, there could be a number of below max (w/benefits) offers worth consideration.

Having seen the new reports of Detroits offer, I would change my vote from “maybe” to “no”, if I could.

Feels very Nerleans Noel-ish. I don’t think anyone as good as Duren has ever taken the QO.

I thin he is more of a 30M guy than 35M and 40M is insane.

DET should have figured out a S&T before this got so deep in the summer IMO.

If the reporting is true and the difference in the negotiations is 5mill per year, he'd be insane to take the QO.

There's definitely a part of me that thinks Sabonis, with two seasons left on his deal, was too quickly dismissed as an option. Especially if the Pistons could've pulled a pick out of the Kings in a S&T.
This will end badly
