On another note....does anyone honestly think that Otis was pressing to get any of the veterans that were picked up by the top contending teams recently: Jamal McGloire, PJ Brown, Cassel, Ratliff.

I will admit that I'm an Otis hater so I will say no he hasn't. But why can't we ever pick up a solid veteran off the wires like that. I didn't want Cassel or really McGloire, but Ratliff and Brown would have helped for sure. You can't tell me that no one wants to play here.

It was reported that Otis tried several times to get Brown. He simply choose the team with the best record in the league. Cant say i blame him since he is chasing a ring. The other guys who knows.

As much damage as the Pistons, Celtics, Mavs, Suns, etc .. ?

If I'm in the twilight of my career and want to win a ring, I pick a team that has the best chance, rather than a darkhorse.

we might "do damage" but we aren't going to the chip this year, where as Detroit, Dallas, Phoenix, San Antonio and Boston all have far better chances than we do...well, maybe not Phoenix...so I dont think there is any use in arguing that just for the sake of arguing...I am sold on the idea that we never had a shot at guys like Cassell, Ratliff, Brown, Barry etc.

they all knew what they wanted, and within days, they got it...not a coincidence if you ask me...

doesnt hurt that reports of Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and KG talking to both Sam and PJ a ton about joining them...

I agree with you mhector...I am just frustrated that the top teams in the league really have...how can I put this...tuned up for the postseason and the Magic have sat idle since the Mo Ev/Cook deal. I don't know..just frustrated at how Otis always likes his team but says that the number one goal is for the Magic to win a championship right now..not down the road and the goal isn't to just make the playoffs. Not trying to be negative after we get to 16 games over .500, just voicing frustrations that have lingered over since the trade deadline.

In principal, I sharply disagree. Why? The Magic are not built to make a run this year. There never were. That the Magic have been the best team in the worst division makes Orlando look better than they actually are. A small trade would make the Magic a strong candidate to make the second round. But they are already a strong candidate for this. There was no real gain to go after a PJ Brown, or trade for T. Thomas. THe Magic would still have been a average-to-good team.

The coming offseason is where GM Smith earns his stripes (or not).

I'd take MP for the mle. I'd prefer to get Maggette, Artest, or Childress, but those guys are probably going to be out of reach. The mle might only get us a guy like MP. He's a decent player, but clearly a notch below those other guys. His defense could be just what we need however. A rotation of Pietrus, Evans, and Hedo could be very good next year. I'm not counting Bogans on purpose btw.

I don't think Otis will go for a pf with the mle at all. For all practical purposes, we are getting that player next year with Battie coming back. Its like getting an additional mle player anyway. And with the possibility of Fran coming over too, and Cook and Lewis playing there, all we need is a second round sleeper who can provide some rebounding off the bench. We should use our first rounder for a pg with resigning Dooling to back up Jameer.

it depends on what we're going to do, what our primary focus is. If we're going for a 1 or 2 first and then working on a 4, i'd say go with a guy like Melvin Ely, not a starter, but gives quality minutes off the bench, move Cook to the reserve 3.

Dwight/Foyle
Shard/Ely
Hedo/Cook

if the 4 is your prime focus, Antwan Jamison and trickle down from there...

I know this thread is headed for the graveyard, but I just wanted a chance to add this:

I don't like Pietrus here. Childress would be great. But I don't think we should go after a 2. Because our hole at PG and PF are alot worse than SG. But you look at the market there isn't much we can go after. So i don't know.

I....don't know. I'd like to think the magic would wait to see

1.How Battie is doing
2. Is Fran ever coming over?

before pulling the trigger on this one.

In regards to MP...I can see him signing with Dallas in the offseason.

How do you propose we fix our PG issues?

I don't think many of the better PGs are/will be available, unfortunately. Plus, with Otis giving Jameer his extension, I think the org is set on him being here.

That's why I said when you look at the market there isn't much to go after. And I am like Jameer Nelson's biggest fan on here..I'm fine with him starting PG. I truly believe that if he can get back to 100% he's our guy. But we still need a better back-up. Chris Duhon could be nice.

So I dont think you can really fault Otis there...deadline, yes, this year's waivers? no

Agreed. nothing appetizing there (The next screw up if it comes will be the draft and Otits favorite- offseason creative financing. )

How about JR Smith coming to the Magic for SG. I know he's had issues but I dont think he is even starting for Denver some nights so he might be ready to bolt. Many players have had issues with George Karl and Byron Scott so who knows. He would have to focus more on defense. I think SVG could influence him.

MLE is big time overpaying for Pietrus. I want either Childress or Diamantidis if we use the money on a guard.

The argument you'll find is that we need more defense on the perimeter, not offense. We're 6th in the league offensively.

J.R.'s turnovers aren't going to help either.

Agreed. Unfortunately you can't divide the MLE up. Pietrus is nice but we have other needs.

You can divide the MLE. When the Magic signed Dooling, they paid him only part of the MLE. The question is whether you can get a player to make it worth your while if you do so.

And for any of you who think the Magic might not have gone hard after P.J. . . .I think the Magic went hard after P.J. last summer and P.J. didn't sign with anyone then because he wanted to do exactly what he's doing -- wait until after the trade deadline to play and sign with the team that he thinks has the best chance of winning a title. The Magic have tried to sign P.J. several times during his career. He apparently has just flirted with them and signed with someone else every time (going back to when Gabe was GM).
