Seems like a lateral move to me. Trading one crap shortstop who is good friends with ortiz, for another.

I expected the Sox to be very busy, they have holes, they have needs/wants, but it has been slow so far. No rumors, nothing... This much talked about off-season has been a yawnfest so far for the BoSox.

Not even for just the Sox, for most of the teams. Arguably the biggest names moved are Gerald Laird and Coco so far.

Yeah, that is true.

Boston Globe wrote:Theo Epstein is due to address the Boston media in about an hour, but the Red Sox GM offered a very brief update as he walked through the lobby of the Bellagio just minutes ago.

``Prepare to be underwhelmed,'' Epstein said.

Theo Epstein was said to have taken CC Sabathia to lunch in Las Vegas on Monday.

The Red Sox are believed to have talked about parameters with Sabathia and perhaps even presented the left-hander with an offer.

However, it is believed that Boston is unlikely to top the Yankees' market-setting (or is it market-capping) $140 million, six-year bid and that Epstein probably focused on Sabathia's chances to win with the Red Sox.

Hmmm, Nolan getting a little ahead of himself??
Some chatter today about Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz today. Rangers president Nolan Ryan admitted to interest, but Theo Epstein values him tremendously. Ryan's quote was a tad presumptuous:

I think he's a real talent. Obviously being a Texas kid we think will look really good in a Texas uniform.

Gonna love hearing all the fat jokes from boston comedians.

Good deal though for the yankees, hopefully this pushes the other Free agents to make their decision faster.

Red Sox, D-Backs talking Lugo-Byrnes swap
Wednesday, December 10, 2008 | Print Entry Posted by Steve Phillips

The Red Sox are having discussions with the Diamondbacks about a Julio Lugo-for-Eric Byrnes swap. Brynes would serve as a fourth outfielder for Boston; Lugo would play second base for the Diamondbacks.

I don't even like burnsy, I just want Lugo to be traded. But if you have byrnes as your fourth. Then sign balldelli for 5th spot, that would be a pretty stacked outfield.

15th December, 2008 - 5:34 pm
Boston Herald - The Red Sox don't typically allow the details of their contract offers to leak, but the offer made to free agent slugger Mark Teixeira is expected to be an eight-year deal worth between $145 and $175 million, or possibly more.

Why even print that? It's a 30+ million dollar window.

With the Red Sox wavering in their pursuit of free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira, the rival Yankees have reportedly become serious players in the race.

Olney feels otherwise,

http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/in ... ney_buster
Heard this late Saturday afternoon, again: The Yankees made an offer, but it's now off the table. They want to cut payroll and, basically, they cannot do this if they sign Teixeira.

Now, it's always possible that Teixeira will be offered to them on a platter, the way Carlos Beltran was a few years ago, for almost $25 million less than what the Mets paid for him. But the Yankees turned down that opportunity, and they almost certainly would do so again in this situation.

Also, the Angels are out as well.

Tim Mead, the Angels' vice president of communications, confirmed a foxsports.com report that the team has withdrawn its offer to Mark Teixeira and is no longer pursuing the free-agent first baseman.
