Kings First Draft Workout is Jrue Holiday
The Kings' first draft workout Thursday will feature UCLA freshman point guard Jrue Holiday, and he is surely among the possibilities to be taken with the pick. With the always-present question of whether talent or need takes precedence, the Kings – who also have the No. 23 and No. 31 picks in the draft – also are believed to be high on Syracuse point guard Jonny Flynn, Memphis shooting guard Tyreke Evans and USC shooting guard DeMar DeRozan.

Shaq Takes Broadcasting Course at Syracuse
Shaquille O'Neal is in training for his next career.
The 7-foot-1 center for the Suns is taking a course at Syracuse University known as Sportscaster U, a crash course designed to teach athletes about the broadcasting industry. He arrived on Sunday and started school Monday at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
“I've been an athlete that's sort of in advance; always thinking,” O'Neal said Monday during a break in his studio work. “After basketball I'd love to have my own radio show, my own TV show.”

Steve Nash: No Extension Until Roster Known
The Suns' upcoming personnel decisions don't just affect the franchise's future. They will affect Steve Nash's future with the franchise.
Nash, 35, and his agent, Bill Duffy, have let the Suns know that they will wait to see how the Suns roster is altered before getting serious about negotiating a two-year contract extension. If and when that time comes, Duffy said Nash would ask for a raise from the current deal, which is slated to expire after paying him $13.125 million for the 2009-10 season.

Kevin Garnett Set for Next Week's Surgery
The Celtics' Kevin Garnett will have surgery to remove bone spurs in his right knee next week. The operation will be performed by team physician Brian McKeown.
"They seem to think it is a straightforward surgery and Kevin will be recovered 100 percent by training camp," said Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge. "Having Kevin back on the court with the team is a priority for us."
Garnett is expected to return in 6-8 weeks, according to an NBA source.

Clippers hit the lottery, get No. 1 NBA draft pick
Danny Manning, Michael Olowokandi . . . and now Blake Griffin.
The Clippers have twice had the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft, and will get it again for a third time, having won the league's draft lottery Tuesday night at Secaucus, N.J. "This guy is the No. 1 pick. We're extremely excited. He's the guy."
There wasn't much of a question the Clippers would do anything other than take the dynamic, explosive forward from Oklahoma. Dunleavy, though, wasn't about to be coy in the wee morning hours in Spain and erased any shred of doubt about the team's intention in the draft June 25 in New York. They moved up from third to first -- armed with a 17.7% chance of winning -- and their upward progression had international reverberations for a beleaguered, hard-luck franchise.

There may be incentive to trade down in the draft as well, with many league executives seeing a drop in talent after the first three picks and the potential to land a quality pick elsewhere in the top 10 while also landing other talent in an acquisition.

Pierce, Perkins Considered Surgery
(Celtics G.M. Danny) Ainge said no other Celtic is likely to be subjected to a medical procedure in the offseason, though coach Doc Rivers indicated that surgery was being considered for Kendrick Perkins (left shoulder) and Paul Pierce (ankle bone spurs). "I don't think anyone will be needing surgery," Ainge said. "Right now, Perk is going to be checked out early next week. He'll have an MRI, but right now we're not thinking he needs surgery."
Pierce was the only Celtic who didn't miss a game because of injury this sea son. Ray Allen missed one game with a hyperextended elbow and played with a hamstring strain in the playoffs. "With Paul and Ray, it's the wear and tear of the season," Ainge said. "It's very unlikely anyone will have surgery this year. Perk, we don't know enough yet, and he's the only one who is a possibility. I don't think Paul's is a problem. Ray strained his hamstring, he didn't pull it.
"I don't think that had a bearing on what happened during the year. Every team has those bothersome aches and pains. We had some little tweaks. "I said I thought we were leaking oil a little bit as the playoffs went along, and those guys logged big minutes. Those guys played pretty well, they were moving pretty good. But they were double- and triple-teamed so much by Orlando in the playoffs."

Kobe Gets 5th Tech; 7th Lands Suspension
The Lakers' frustration was evident when Bryant picked up his fifth technical foul of the playoffs after slamming the ball down in disgust in the third quarter when he didn't getting a foul call on a shot at the other end.
Bryant will be suspended for one game if he picks up a seventh technical foul in the playoffs.
"I won't get another one," Bryant said, repeating it for emphasis.

The spurs in Garnett's knee were detected before the season, but were not considered serious enough to warrant surgery. He went down late in the first half of a Feb. 19 game against Utah in Salt Lake City. He was convinced to rest, though an MRI revealed no damage. Garnett returned to action March 15, performing briefly in four games, then was shut down by the Celtics, who were hoping to have him available for the playoffs.

Nets Considering Flynn, Blair, Among Others
"Here's how I look at it," Nets team president Rod Thorn said. "In the top 10 there will be three guys who are really good. And two or three guys who are never better than rotation players. Between 10 and 20, there will be two guys who turn out to be very good NBA players. And between 21 and 30 there will be one very good player.
"Some years there are more, but by and large, that's what you get. The charge is getting the right guy. They are there."
Among the players the Nets are considering with the No. 11 pick are point guards Jonny Flynn of Syracuse and Ty Lawson of North Carolina; wings Terence Williams of Louisville; and power forwards Earl Clark of Louisville (via Plainfield), James Johnson of Wake Forest, and DeJuan Blair of Pittsburgh.

Kyle Korver Has Surgery on Shooting Wrist
Veteran swingman Kyle Korver is recovering from what the Jazz deemed to be both "minor" and "successful" surgery to remove scar tissue from his right, shooting wrist.
The procedure, according to the team, was performed by Dr. Andrew Weiland on Monday in New York City.
Korver injured the wrist when he fell on it, and as a result he missed four games in November.

Future Plans Not Clear for Kyle Korver
But (Kyle) Korver sent out mixed signals when discussing those plans last week with a radio station in Iowa, the state in which he was raised.
On one hand, Korver seemed to indicate he does plan to become a free agent this offseason, telling KXNO 1460-AM in Des Moines this: "I'm not trying to leave Utah because I don't like it, I don't like the team. You know, at the end of the day it's a business decision. ... I mean, obviously money doesn't make you happy. But you've got to see what else is out there."
On the other hand, meanwhile, Korver also suggested that he might play out next season in Utah and become a free agent in 2010, saying this to the same radio station: "But, you know, the next summer is the summer where everyone is a free agent. You know, there's gonna be a lot of moves."

Grizzlies with No. 2 Pick Headed for Spain
That was Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins on Tuesday night during the NBA's draft lottery telecast. After the draft order was decided, with the Griz shockingly moving up to grab the No. 2 pick, Hollins had plenty to be excited about.
Meanwhile, Hollins and Griz general manager Chris Wallace celebrated by telephone. They also agreed that a trip to Spain is in order. Plans are for them to leave Saturday.
"I was ecstatic," Wallace said. "We dispelled the notion that our franchise can't get lucky. And strategically, we have a number of options. There's only one player that can be taken ahead of us if we keep the pick. We're going to be talking to all of the other 29 teams. This is a great night to be a Grizzly and a great night to be a Memphian."

Could Clippers Take Ricky Rubio?
The Clippers, according to insiders, have a crush on Italian point guard Ricky Rubio. If Los Angeles was to draft Rubio, word is it would look to trade current starting point guard Baron Davis, the former Warriors star. (Maybe the new GM, whom the Warriors say has autonomy over the roster, would be inclined to reacquire Davis?)
That's perhaps a moot point now as the Clippers almost have to take Griffin or risk possibly making one of the worst decisions in draft history.
"I think five years from now, Blake Griffin will be hitting his stride in the NBA, and he will be an impact player wherever he is," Clippers president Andy Roeser told AP. "He is an athletic player. He can do all sorts of things and has a ton of talent, and I think any team will be happy to have him."
