With Kobe Bryant having won five NBA titles, one away from Michael Jordan’s six, the comparisons between the two are inevitable. But Phil Jackson, who coached Bryant’s Lakers and Jordan’s Bulls to all 11 of their combined titles, thinks Jordan is in his own stratosphere and that the conversations comparing the two stars should stop.

"Kobe has patterned himself after Michael, and there are a lot of identical things there,” Jackson told the Los Angeles Times, “but it's one thing to hope to be like him, it's another thing to be like him."

Kobe Bryant earns high praise from Phil Jackson, but the Lakers coach says his current star should not be compared to Michael Jordan. (AP photo)
"I'm with (ESPN's) Bill Simmons on this," he added. "We have to take Michael Jordan out of the equation. Stop comparing anyone to Michael Jordan. It's just not fair. He was remarkable. ...

"(Kobe) doesn't shoot the same percentage (.455) as Michael (.497). He has the same characteristics as Michael, but he's not the same player. It takes nothing away from him — he's a great player in his own right."

Pat Riley says Kobe is on the same level as Jordan.....

Phil jackson says Kobe is a better Skilled player then MJ

The symmetry is so impressive that Jackson inevitably is asked to compare this team to his Bulls dynasty. If the angle is premature--don't the Lakers have to win six titles first?--even Benny the Bull would admit concern that Shaq and Kobe might be too much for You Know Who in a seven-game series. Not that Jackson is avoiding the comparisons. It was inevitable he'd say something, in his purple-and-gold euphoria, to tweak what he left behind in Chicago. But Michael Jordan? In a chat about Bryant, Jackson said he (KOBE)has displayed a better "overall" game than any other player he has coached. That would include, um, Jordan. "It's the best I've ever seen a player of mine with an overall court game," he says. "I'm asking him to do so much, and he's accomplishing it."

I watched MJ's and Kobe's whole career's...Kobe is a similar player with similar results and very much at the same level as Jordan...IMO Kobe is more skilled and will win more...so>

Probably like 6 points in the first three quarters combined for 3/20 from the field and then hit weird angled shots the entire fourth quarter for 31 points or something ridiculous like that and finish with 15/40. He'll chuck all night to get that scoring title and then fall just short. I hope Andrew Bynum gets called for offensive interference on Kobe's last second chuck.

Kobe could score 200 for all I care, nothing he can do at this point, or at any point ever, will make him better than MJ.

Just because most of the world (even most lakers fans) knows he's not as good as MJ somehow makes them haters? haha. Good stuff.

A more appropriate conversation would be if he's better than Vince Carter.

Right?

It's just as silly as people saying Kobe>MJ.

I'm just doing the same thing. Although at one point in their respective careers, vince in some circles was considered to be better than Kobe. He just fizzled out quickly.

Smh the jock riding is ridiculous. Proclaiming that a player who was overwhelmingly the most dominant player in his career is better than one who was really frikkin great but always "ARGUABLY" the best through even his best years despite modeling his game against the aforementioned player isn't hating, it's common sense, without stretching any facts or massaging any statistics.

Can we not just enjoy the closest scoring race in the last 3 decades?

Actually, Kobe is closer to Jordan than Carter is close to Kobe.

What circles was Carter considered better? I don't remember these circles. Vince was never in the same conversation as Kobe on the defensive end.

Michael Jordan: 14x All-Star, 11x All-NBA, 9x All-Defensive
Kobe Bryant: 14x All-Star, 13x All-NBA, 11x All-Defensive
Vince Carter: 8x All-Star 2x All-NBA, 0x All-Defensive

One of these guys shouldn't be here...

Kareem Abdul Jabbar has 6 titles and 6 regular season MVP awards, and also has scored the most points in the NBA history.

He's better than Kobe and MJ.

Wow, you obviously don't know much about NBA basketball with such drivel.

the comparisons between Kobe and MJ is echoed by numerous NBA players, coaches, GMs, etc. People who ARE NBA basketball. What career achievements of Carter anyone who actually knows NBA basketball can put him in the same tier of Kobe's career? yikes. get a tv, man, and watch some games please.

Also, Id hate to break it to ya, but if Kobe scores 200 points tonight, people will start to wonder if Jordan was ever the scorer that Kobe is in his 16th season. :)

200 points would be legendary. Your hate will reach overload level he he

You really think kobe scoring 200 in one game means he's a better overall player than MJ? He already scored 81 (I hate you smitch), and that one game didn't make him better than MJ. What makes you think one game of 200 would? It's one game.

Career high's are neat and cool to look at, but you have to analyze the totality of a players career and his impact on the game. Not one frickin game.

During his Air Canada days people really thought Carter would be the next Jordan. Physically Vince had everything and more on Jordan, hops, agility, speed, and hand size. And obviously, Vince going to North Carolina only added to the arguments. However, we all know now Vince never had the mental fortitude to make use of his ridiculous God given talent and now people are debating whether he's a HOF or not, a huge drop from being compared to the GOAT.

Of course Kareem is better than Kobe and he has a debate with MJ. I think Kareem is #2 all-time.

What's your point?
