Does adding him change the trajectory of this team from a first round exit? No
That's why trading a first for him with so much uncertainty as to the future made little sense. Cements the 7-11 squad just hoping and praying Scottie turns into a top 15 player.
Not every threads needs to turn into this
But does adding a young kid who may or may not end up any good change the trajectory of this team? Maybe, but he also maybe never even becomes starting material.
One move (outside of getting a superstar) does not change any teams trajectory. But small moves that add together over the course of years can greatly change where a team is or is going. Poeltl is a move that in addition to future moves may (or may not) lead to us being greater than first round fodder.
As you said, short of adding a superstar, most individual moves won't result in a major change in trajectory for any organization. If organizations operated this way, teams would just give away their 2nd rounders, they'd give away their non elite 1st rounders, they wouldn't use their MLE, they wouldn't make trades involving non stars. Why make these moves if they don't result in a major move up the standings? The goal should be to add enough talent that maybe you can luck into developing a star or you accumulate enough assets to acquire one.
The Raps are betting that Poeltl will be a more valuable asset than a random top 6 protected 1st next year, and that's probably a good bet.
