I don't know soccer, but it can't be good when Eng has the ball on our side 90% of this half.

I never watch soccer except for the World Cup and that crazy goal made me wonder something. Why do the goalies wear such think padded gloves? Does a hard hit soccer ball really hurt so much that goalies need to wear such heavily padded gloves?
I understand that the gloves for the UK goalie didn't cause the fluke goal and my question wasn't trying to imply that. It just seems like on a rare certain type of shot, a thinner type of gloves would make it easier to grab possession of the ball if say another player was close by trying to kick in a rebound shot.

It's something I've never really understood either. I'm a big Australian Rules football fan, I'm sure that guys hit the ball just as hard and don't wear giant padding on their hands.

Because they have to deflect lots of shots with their hands and a soccer ball can travel at really high speeds (record is 110 mph I believe). Compare it to like baseball, would you like to be the catcher of a fastball without a mitt?

Keepers would break a lot of fingers if they didnt wear thick gloves...Let ME shoot rockets at you in goal with just baseball batting gloves on...no thanks

I think it has more to do with grip than cushioning. Soccer balls have a very smooth surface and can be slippery, especially when wet. The inside of the glove is rough and provides extra grip.

As much as I like the ESPN/ABC broadcasters all being British, it sucks that JP Dellacamera gets the shaft.

I think the new world champion is in group E-H. I can't see France, England, Argentina or Germany win it.
