It's David Stern's fault. He made some stupid rule that you can't wear a wristband on or above your elbow, and that you can't wear two wristbands on one arm or have them customized either (now you just see the players # on it).

So players like Kobe Bryant, Wade, T-Mac, AI (who doesn't wear a wristband at all now), VC, Larry Hughes, Cuttino Mobley and many others had to change how they wear their accessories. Many tried wearing them under the elbow but I guess they felt it's uncomfortable. Now you see the long sleeve as a substitute. Then you have followers who carry on the trend.

Compression sleeves are great for keeping your muscles warm, for helping to reduce swelling (they're like finger sleeves that way) and they can also mask tattoos and such.

I don't wear arm sleeves but I use the finger versions all the time and I've used the calf version on occasion. They're great if you've had an injury.

Kobe had a wrist injury to begin the year with. Not sure if he still has it, but I know it was sort of a lingering injury.

I think they look horrible. Iverson is the only one who can pull it off.

thats exactly right..kobe had a really sore forearm during training camp and he thats when he used the arm sleeve.. and if u notice.. he doesnt wear the armband on his left arm anymore..stern's decision to ban armbands above the elbow is stupid imo..

Stern also banned the compresssion pants last year after Lebron wore them like 6 games straight and Wade wore them before his injury. But the improve circulation of Blood to muscles which increase oxygen to the muscles cutting down on swelling and fatigue. Stern mus have felt pretty bad for those players still getting dunked on hard in the 4th quarter.

he has a bursa sac in his right elbow that always gets hit and needs to be drained occasionally. so he has padding there, and the sleeve to keep it in place. melo's the same on his left arm. not sure whats up with kobe/bron.

I wasn't really sure why AI started wearing his, mostly because he wasn't in Denver at that time. But I never really noticed any padding on his sleeve.

I know Melo started wearing his for pretty much that same reason though....I think it was around march of 2005. But the padding in his is much more noticeable....

Kobe was the one who started wearing those compression pants then everyone(Redd, Lebron, Wade, Vince in particular) started to copy him..

I've worn one off and on for about 5 years when I play volleyball--really helps the elbow bounce back when you have to play on consecutive nights or sit for awhile and then have to get back swinging.

Those things smell absolutely freaking terrible after you wear them too--they get soaked and it's just funky. You have to hand wash them and air dry them, so it never really gets the funk out either.
It's not whether you win or lose, it's how good you look playing the game

I think Kobe was the first one who wore them in a different color other than black or white, but he wasn't the first one to actually wear them.

Dallas Mavericks swingman Jerry Stackhouse is widely seen as the pioneer of this practice, relying on a pair of runners' tights throughout last season's playoffs to combat a longstanding groin injury.
