Makes less and less sense. They're essentially gutting their roster totally, other than the massively overrated Lopez, and Melo wants to extend there? :crazy:

Sure, but this alleged deal pretty much guts their entire roster. Getting Melo is all fun and games, I'm sure, but once you're stuck with him and surround him with nothing but scrubs, what are you gonna do?

Well, there haven't exactly been that many trades in NBA history with this much salary moving around....but the 125% rule when you're trading away half your team, allows for some pretty large gaps in money.

Anyone know if this would be the largest trade in NBA history? I know there was a large one a few years ago when Jason Williams and James Posey went to Miami, that may have had more players. But this has got to be the largest in terms of total salary.

It would be, both in terms of salaries and number of players.

You and me both, bro. But then again, keep in mind that the people who are leaking these stories to the media have their own reasons for doing those leaks. They're not doing it for **** and giggles. It could be all a charade. Or he could simply have lost his mind.

Billups will play this season for NJ. He wants to go back to Denver next season though.

Well, at his age, and if he really feels as strongly about Denver as he claims to, he could just say "**** it, I'm retiring."

Edit: not making a prediction or anything, just saying. Wouldn't be the first athlete to retire because he got traded.

yeah, i don't get that either. sure he said he'd prefer a buy out, but that doesn't mean he'll refuse to live up to his contract. i'm sure he'll play his best for the nets, guy is a pro.

He was talking about the buyout clause in his contract that gives his team the opportunity to buy out the last year of his contract (next year) for small money.
He wants that buyout next season. But he said he'll play in NJ if he gets traded.

I think Billups plays, I think the possibility of reuniting with his BFF Rip Hamilton makes the transition easier on him. Too bad Pistons couldve had this trio in 2003

This is exactly it. Rose and WWW are already plotting to get CP3 wherever Melo ends up, be it NY or NJ. With this trade they stay competitive for a couple years, and then can easily sign Paul when he is a free agent(if not by trade sooner).

Sorry to be lazy but is there any indication that Melo will agree to this. I thought the holdup has always been Melo doesn't want to play in NJ more than any combo of what players would remain in Jersey. Also why would Detroit Nix this over PEtro when they stand to save 17 million dollars?

You guys really overrate the importance that kind of preferences have on the player's career decision-making. Not only he won't retire, in a couple of months he'll be saying he'll love to play there next year and that he doesn't want to be waived/bought out/traded (at least until his last year becomes fully guaranteed).
