i have some blackstar on a mix somebody made me. but honestly, i dont listen to enough hip hop to really deep opinions on most, other than when i listen to something i can say - "yeah, i like that" or "no, i dont like that"

i appreciate that talib and mos def have an intellectual approach to their music and its not just usual garbage about money, fame and hoes. from what ive heard though, i wish mos def had a little more melody in his stuff. it can be a little monotone from what ive heard. i really love stuff with a good groove a good melody, preferably real instruments and lyrics that are either funny, interesting or tell a story - instead of just a bunch of random incoherent words that rhyme.

its not blackstar, but how about blackalicious? i like this song.

this is the other talib song that i really like, but i've probably only heard like 10% of his stuff. out of about 10 gigs on my mp3 player (the stuff i really like) i have maybe 50-75 hip hop tunes. so as you can see its a small percentage of my library.

this is more my speed... one of my favorite guitar solos of all-time

guitar solo starts at 2:25 and nels shreds it. good times.

yes, i am bored today. home on a day off, rainy, no hoops to talk about, no soccer on today, taking a skyrim break.

another of my favorite guitar solos - phish, the reba solo = magic

for some lighter stuff, george benson, oh yeah, guitar magic

and if jazz is your thing, nothing beats chick corea's return to forever band - 1976 "the romatic warrior", one of the nastiest pieces of music ever. chick goes **** bananas on the piano. tune doesnt really start until 2:20 mark, chicks solo at 6"45 is insane

Yes ! My all-time favorite album right there ! For anyone who didn't know about this song, you have to listen to RE:DEFinition right afterwards are they're supposed to follow each other. I must've listened to that song at least 300 times.

Also love me some Wilco @fatlever

Not sure I should start posting what I listen to or I might just never stop :)

I'm at school right now so I can't give any of those a listen, but I have to say I'm not really big into "guitary" music. Probably just before my time...

I mean don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, The Police, and Steely Dan, but rock stuff just isn't in my wheelhouse.

It sounds like you'd be a fan of guys like Immortal Technique, Eminem, Sage Francis, Common, Saul Williams, Andre 3000 (Outkast), Pharoahe Monche, MF Doom, The Roots, etc.......

The list of intellectual, "poetry" hip hop artists has really grown over the last 10 or so years. It's just hard to catch a lot of them because they aren't mainstream hype machines like Lil Wayne and Drake

If you want intelligent lyrics, I may have some artists you might like. First of all like SWEDD said, the Roots (my favorite band) are a must-listen if you haven't yet.

Pharoahe Monch is excellent as well in that lane of "conscious" rappers, although he also has some pretty hardcore songs. Pay close attention to the lyrics.

But I'm sure you've at least heard of them, since you listen to Blackalicious (which is one of my favorite groups as well), Mos Def, Talib... Then there's all the classics like Nas or Wu-Tang of course

Bonus, what I'm listening to right know :

Thanks for that Tupik, I never knew there was a second part to definition.

How do you feel about Nas' album with Damian Marley (Bob Marley's son)? I just played through it and there's a ton of potential there. I know the two of them like to work together, and I'm glad!

I've loved the the Reggae sound/flow ever since I went to Jamaica. Real easy to listen to and you can tell those guys care about what they're doing.

Some other Damian Marley

Hell yeah, fats!!! I simply love this. I don't know why, but I sort of thought that besides Tupik there isn't anybody else on the Cats boards who listens to artists like Blackalicious, Mos Def, Jurassic 5 etc.

I'm pretty much stuck in the past music wise. I'm mostly a 90s, 80s hip hop listener, yet I pretty much can listen to anything from back in the way. Whether it's rock (The Doors, The Beatles), jazz (Miles Davis, John Coltrane), funk (Parliament, James Brown), soul (Isaac Hayes, The Isley Brothers) or even pop. I just love how goofy and sloppy 80s pop music is and I mean that in a good way. I guess I'm one of those ignorant people who thinks that musicians nowadays have no talent whatsoever. Well, at least the mainstream ones.

Off to Bee Gees "Stayin' Alive" and Van Halen's "Jump".

By the way a question for the aussies from this board. Has anybody seen Ater Majok in action? He's a late second round draft pick for the Lakers and has played in Australia (for the Perth Wildcats and Gold Coast Blaze).

It's just that the last picks of the 2011 draft are these unknown African dudes, who don't have that much footage on the internet. Just look at these cool names: Ater Majok, Targuy Ngombo (supposedly has pulled the good old "change the year of my birth by 5 years, so I would be a prospect"), Chukwudiebere Maduabum, Adam Hanga (I think he was Hungarian).

I'm a Wildcat fan so I saw a fair bit of Ater live. He is reasonably athletic and was a decent shot blocker for our short league. He had a bad work ethic, was often late for training and didn't seem overly smart.

When he got drafted I couldn't believe it, as he would probably have to play small forward in the NBA unless he suddenly added a ton of weight. He has bad ball control, wasn't much of a shooter and tried to do too much.

But he apparently has been working hard and is putting up some decent stats for Nitra in the Slovakian Extra League. I have no idea what level that league is, so I'm not sure how promising it is.

Overall I don't expect much from him mainly because he is seems so dumb.

I sort of came upon other similar comments about him on the internet, so I guess he'll never play a game in the league. Thanks for the insight.

Funny fact - he is currently a teammate of technically former Bobcat Robert Vaden.

He apparently has an a active twitter account (and facebook one too) so you can stalk him there, Lamar. If you would need to translate anything in Slovak let me know. According to his club profile page he should belong to Maccabi Tel Aviv and just playing a season in Nitra. Majok was announced MVP of the week in SLovak league recently (don't know if that means anything).

Another fun fact, when he left Wildcats he owed players money. Luckily Gilbert Arena's wasn't on the team.

Another fun fact there are 2 Aussies playing NCAA this year who's surname is Diop.

We need to draft both so we can play a triple Diop threat.

There have been 5 Diop's this last decade in the NCAA. All, but one, are centers, no one has averaged more than 3 points and no one has really played a huge role on their teams. Sounds about right.

These 2 are forwards, ones 6'8 the other 6'9.

TJ Diop scored 4 points in his debut! Could he break the 3 point ceiling?
