Yet another in a long list of draftees taken over the years on length and athleticism.

Definitely needed to improve his skills to make the jump and establish himself in the pros but you can't do that without being well coached and given the opportunity to play and make mistakes.

Amen. Let's see what happens with Dinwiddie, Mitchell, and Gigi. Run some isolations for KCP. We're 5-22. What's the worst that can happen?

It's possible that this may disrupt our tank, but you can't teach the youngsters how to play basketball the right way with Josh Smith out on the floor. Well done, SVG.

I can't get over how many people on the general board think he will be a savior for their team or in any way help them.

One more thing....Think of yourself 5 years from now. It's the beginning of the year 2020, you just bought your first self-driving car. North Korea is no longer studied in Geography, but rather History. Oh, one more thing...WE'RE STILL PAYING JOSH SMITH!!!

I do wish we had just bitten the bullet and not used the stretch provision. We're going to be at a disadvantage with salary cap for years to come. It stings. There's no getting around that.

Go to Google Calendar now and write a message to be e-mailed to you 5 years from now saying "WTF? We're STILL paying Josh Smith?" Trust me....The future you will appreciate the reminder.

Its really not that bad though all things considered. Its only 5.5 per and we got the new TV deal coming up. Obviously its not fun being down 5 mil for the next 5 years but it was well worth it too see Smith go. I mean thats basically just Caron Butler money, We will be fine.

But you're going to Google Calendar it so you get a message in 5 years, right?

If the stretch provision is not "biting the bullet", what are you referring to?

Anyone who watches summer league knows there is absolutely no reason to force mitchell into the rotation.
Meanwhile, this will be the first real stretch of drummond and monroe starting together as a proper 4/5 combo other than the end of dres rookie year. Very excited for that.

What are you trying to say with this?

Let's see how much we improve... I'm thinking Jennings, DJ and Monroe should be next if we truly care about getting back to being a defensive force... champions start with defense.

Wow!

Even though they get help from the league to pay him out, really did not expect that they'd just eat the contract like that. Still costing them a huge amount of dollars to get him off the roster.

You'd assume this means that they're making a serious push and/or have come to some sort of agreement to retain Greg Monroe now then too.
It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.

I've posted about wanting this to happen for so long now. Nice to see the front office making a decision that is best for the Pistons basketball team - regardless of financial impact or job security.

I expected there to be a full blown debate on this but I don't see the normal Smith defenders anywhere. Did they stop posting or something? (I've been away awhile)

I agree with their decision to use the stretch provision. they can spend an extra ~$8 million over the next two offseasons signing decent/good free agents that will help this team going forward. smith was mainly hurting this team two ways, both his on-court performance and his salary. SVG couldn't properly rebuild until both those issues were fixed, one was fixed and with the stretch provision we can at least get the ball rolling on building SVG's program.

some players that should be in that price range and would help this team (obviously depending on whether or not they resign with their current team):
- Tristan Thompson
- amir Johnson
- robin lopez
- danny green
- demarre carroll
- tobias harris (probably going to cost more than $8 mil/per year)
- reggie Jackson
- kyle O'Quinn (would be a great pickup)
- draymond green
- Patrick beverley
- K.J. McDaniels (this could be a great pickup but the sixers are almost guaranteed to resign him)

the dream would be to sign jimmy butler but that ain't gonna happen.

So we know how Mitchell plays with summer league players? Mitchell's in his second year, we have over a million invested in him. When is the right time to see how he can do? He hasn't played meaningful rotation minutes yet, and we're 5-22. Now is the time.

I think we mortgage two years - trade our expirings this year for two year contracts plus draft picks. We're so far away from relevance that we should truly bottom out, collect some picks, and go for it in two years, when everyone has already shot their wads......

There must have been internal issues involving Smith. Jennings had a quote to the free press that wasn't flattering.

Something like, "if you wanna make the most money and be the big dog and you can't perform, everyone's gonna wonder what's wrong with you."

even for jennings, quotes like that don't happen if they lost a good teammate who just wasn't fitting in.

I think this is the 'bottoming out' year lol. you don't want to bottom out too long, you'll end up like the sixers.

we have a ton of financial flexibility moving forward, we have a few young players that have potential in Drummond, KCP and Dinwiddie (I have faith in the mayor!) and we have a coach who knows what he is doing. having what will likely be a high pick this year is just icing on the cake.
