Here ya go Scoot nerd out so you’ll be able to explain it when we need your expertise

You think I didn’t already have these numbers?

So Scoot if the NBA makes the salary cap 11.6 mil higher today prior to free agency starting how much cap space if any does that give the Pacers to pursue players ? Since we’re not ever paying luxury tax does our $$$$$$ to acquire players increase any or are we where we are currently with only around 26 mil to spend ?

Sure! First off, the $11.6m is a raise from this past seasons cap, so not on top of the projected 2022 cap. With the cap at $123.65m, the luxury tax falls in line at $150.267m.

Currently, Indy has $90.34m in salary committed for next year on active players, and $0 in dead salary (hooray! Monta no longer has it all!). Currently, Bennedict Mathurin is the only “guaranteed” cap hold on the books at $6.5m. There are no cap holds for Nembhard or Brown, as they’re 2nd round picks, and must be signed with either cap space, or an available exception (vet minimum, BAE, MLE, etc).

That leaves Indy with 12 players under contract/accounted, over $26.81m to the salary cap, and almost $54 to the luxury tax.

There are some cap holds lessening our cap space at this point, that are on the books until Indy either renounces them, signs them to a smaller contract, or renounces them off the books completely. Those main ones would be Ricky Rubio at $26.7m, TJ Warren at $19.4m, and Jalen Smith at $4.67m. If you wish to re sign any of those guys, or sign and trade them, you should generally keep their cap holds on the books until you do something with them. Lance, York, and Hinton also have negligible cap holds that are completely unnecessary to think about, even if you wish to keep them (they’ll all likely get the vet minimum or a two way if kept).

Edit: changed the numbers a bit. Forgot to subtract the Mathurin cap hold from potential cap/tax space. Duh

Also, those numbers should tell you that it makes little sense to trade Turner for Ayton in a S&T. If you want Ayton, you pretty much have access to that space. All you have to do is deal Goga into cap space.

If Spurs aren’t in on Ayton I’d rather take Poeltl and give them Myles. Next I’d help out Atlanta taking John Collins. Then I send Brogdon in a 3 team deal to anyone who wants to help us get something back for him :P :banghead:

There’s no way he’s worth this but it’s fine letting the Knicks overpay. I’d much rather of had Dejounte Murray.

Since deal can’t officially be signed until next week, could still turn into a S&T. My thought has always been Cleveland might be willing to just get off of Windler’s money And we could turn this into a straight up sign and trade of Windler for Rubio. This would clear a roster spot for Cleveland, save them money on the tax, and preserve their TMLE for other uses.

Personally if we take anyone back I’d want Dean Wade PF for depth.

I was imagining that he’s key enough they wouldn’t be willing to move him like this and would just use their tMLE to sign Rubio. Windler seems expendable enough, and could possibly help,us on the wings as a SF sized wing with shooting ability, if he can stay healthy.

You've addressed why the Cavs might want to do this as a S&T, but there is one reason the Pacers might want to make it easier on the Cavs, as well. If Rubio helps them (even a little bit) get into the playoffs, the pick we get from them next year is a better pick.

It’s too early to tell but due to Irving and Durant moves and Bridges implosion 2 teams (Nets and Hornets) might be moving down to play in territory helping Cavaliers also

I know he gets some numbers, and a lot of press, but I'm just not that high on Donovan Mitchell. Could be my aversion to small guards.
