I missed the game because I was watching Tchouaméni and his supporting cast get ready for the World Cup so I'll have to catch a replay. Looking at the boxscore the game went to OT and Begarin was heavily involved so it's not going a short recap and it's also past midnight here so I'm going to do it tomorrow at the earliest. I'm hyped though.

He also raised his 3P% from 26.6 to 31.5 in a single game. Gotta love those small sample sizes

just realized that the guy Begarin will have to beat out to make the roster next year is Malik Fitts.

I hope Juhann is working on his air-guitar-on-the-bench celebrations. Get ready for the "Begarin is our 2022 draft pick!" media blitz, coming your way late June 2022.

Paris Basketball played against Nanterre who is one of their two local rivals as well as one of the best team in France. With Toupane out, Paris were super thin with just eight pro players available (one of which doesn't feature in the normal rotation and another one that was signed this week to compensate O'Quinn's departure).

Begarin started off with an airball on a pull up baseline jumper. On his next touch offensively he got fouled on a post up. On the resulting sideout, he drove past his man with ease but missed a difficult layup over the rotating big man. Because he drew so much attention, Kamagate was able to get to the front of the rim uncontested to grab the offensive board and was fouled before he could get back up with the ball. On that sideout, Begarin made a nice pull up from three despite a pretty good contest. On the other end he had a nice possession fronting Horton (the Nanterre big) and with the shotclock winding down he closed out to the ballhandler to force an airball (and a shotclock violation as a result). He had a turnover trying to cross behind his back and loosing his footing (it looked like he got tripped by the defender but the refs didn't call it).

There was a funny moment when Begarin gambled for a steal and missed it but his opponent inadvertently backed up into Begarin and lost his dribble resulting in a steal for Paris anyway. Off a defensive rebound, Begarin ran hard to the corner, the other team had a momentary breakdown defensively trying to get matched up and that's all he needed to sink the corner three. ON defense, he was guarding a shooter above the break when the ball kinda fell into his lap. Three dribbles later that ended up with an easy uncontested layup.

In his second stint, his first shot came after he set an off ball screen then hung around the dunker spot until he received the dump off and did what you are supposed to do in that spot. He then missed a deep catch and shoot three from above the break. On the defensive end he crashed the defensive board from all the way out behind the three point line and took off. He got by his man with a good cross and Nanterre had no choice but to give the foul to stop the transition opportunity. His next touch on offense came off the catch in the corner where he blew right by the closeout and he tried to hit Kamagate with a bounce pass when the help came over to prevent the layup. There was just no room to fit the ball into and he turned it over. He again grabbed a defensive rebound and took off. This time he used an hesitation dribble to keep his defender off balance and finished with a wrong hand layup through his chest. Then came back down the floor, poked the entry pass away from the big man trying to post him up. He got the steal and Nanterre gave the foul and two free throws to avoid the layup. Begarin made one of two from the line.

Begarin started the second half with a drive to the basket and a forced layup over two guys that had no chance (he did get bumped on the drive and probably expected to get a foul call to be fair). You could tell he was feeling it during the game because it's the first time this year that I saw him wave off the Kamagate screen to play an iso. With a quick cross and after putting his shoulder into his defender he got to the rim but his layup rimmed out. After the miss was tapped out to Allman, he relocated to empty spot behind the arc and knocked down a catch and shoot three off the kickout from Boatright. He pushed the ball up the court off a Nanterre make and caught the defense napping a little. He spinned off his man but settled for a fadeaway that was contested by the rotating big man. That opened up the offensive rebound opportunity for his teammate who immediately got fouled.

Begarin came back in the game with nine minutes left in the fourth and immediately had a couple of nice contests on the defensive end. With Paris down 5, he waved off Kamagate again to go iso this time with the Nanterre big man. He just hopped into a pull up three that he confidently swished through. On the next possession he drew a non-shooting foul when he was bumped getting by his man. He grabbed a defensive rebound and took off. With a behind the back cross and then another one in front of his body, he kept his defender on his heels and went all the way to the rim for the easy layup (and the lead). Down one with two minute left, he took a pull up from three out of pick and roll when the defender dropped to protect the paint but left it a little short. Up one, with 25.4 seconds left and a full shotclock, Nanterre gave the ball to their best player Nick Johnson to burn some clock. Begarin picked him up, put a ton of pressure forcing him to pick up the ball then stripping him and getting the foul call when Johnson tried to pry the ball back from Begarin's hands.

With ten second left after the foul, Allman chose to go hero ball but his drive was erased by a chasedown block from Horton. Sleva missed a putback and Kamagate too but he got fouled so he went to the line. He missed the first one but knocked down the second one to tie the game. Nanterre couldn't get a clean look with just 4 seconds left on the clock so the game went to overtime.

In overtime, Begarin missed his first opportunity. He created a ton of space with a jab step but left the three a little long. He ran a pick and roll with Sleva and had a nice pass over the two defenders to lead Sleva to the basket. He then grabbed an offensive board in between three Nanterre players and got two free throws for his effort. He made both to tie the game (and break his career high). Then he got a steal in the passing lane and raced down the floor but missed the dunk (thankfully Sleva cleaned up his mess so Paris still got two points out of it). He knocked down a catch and shoot three to break another tie with two minutes remaining. On the next possession he grabbed an offensive board, backed out then pulled from three. Nothing but net. +4 Paris with 1:20 left. Nanterre immediately cut it to one with a three of their own. Allman finally realized that Begarin was hot so he gave him the ball on the next trip and he unfortunately missed a baseline turnaround (he created plenty of space for his shot though). On the defensive possession he sinked into the paint to tag the roll man but still managed to closeout hard to the shooter to force a miss from three. Boatright blew by his guy to give Paris a three point lead. On the last shot, Nanterre could get nothing better than a three over Kamagate's outstretched arm and predictably missed.

Game highlights:

TL;DR: By far his best and most confident game of the season offensively. There was zero doubt he was the best player on the floor during that game and especially during that stretch where he closed the game out in overtime. It was the tightest his handles have looked all year. His jumper looked a lot smoother than usual (even his misses looked good). He was constantly in attack mode, pushing the ball off every rebound and even off makes and he drew a bunch of fouls (7 in total so he was a bit unlucky to get only 4 free throws) and a lot of help on the paint so even if he wasn't up to his standard around the rim he opened up multiples offensive rebound opportunities for his team.

Not his best game defensively but he still ended up with four steals, the biggest stop of the game and to be fair he was matched up a lot with Horton who is one of the best big man in the league and didn't shy away from the battle in the paint.

maybe Begarin was extra motivated to show his stuff offensively after that article came out saying how bad he was offensively..
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)

Point is there are spots available. Getting rid of Romeo and his $$ helps Begarin’s chances too — I’m sure Brad and Co saw last summer that he is just as good (if not better) a prospect with far less commitment required.

Depending on how far the Celtics go in the playoffs, they could also be in play for ring chasers to fill out their bench next season. If they trade for a third star that'll eat further into the Celtics depth and open up even more roster spots. There's plenty of moving parts still.

I hope the front office doesn't bring him over and park him on the end of the bench.

He needs to figure his shot out abroad mechanically, and spend his first year in Maine putting up NBA 3s, getting more comfortable defending P&R and with the ball in his hands.

The worst thing you can do to a shy player like Begarin is drop him into a contending situation, and expect him to figure out how to shoot well despite only one or two looks at the basket per game, and refine his playmaking while deferring to NBA stars like the Jays, Smart, etc. He needs to be brought along slowly. And as a 45th pick who you don't necessarily need to sign to an NBA contract, you have the luxury to do that.

I don't think there is anything wrong with his mechanics. He just needs to be consistent. I expect him to be in the Celtics' rotation sooner rather than later.

Sign Begarin to a minimum rookie deal, unguaranteed after the first year, and have him play next season in Maine, with occasional opportunities with the varsity. As much practice time with the Cs as possible.

don't look now but Begarin followed up his 29 point game with a 21 point game a couple days ago.

He's now averaging 25 PPG in his last 2, and has shot a combined 10/17 (58.9%) from 3 during those games. Obviously a really small sample size but it's definitely worth keeping an eye on to see if he keeps this up. He might be making a leap right now in his development. Still only 19 yrs old! And doing this in the top league in France.

These are the 2 games he played immediately following the article that came out saying he couldn't shoot - coincidence? Maybe it's a coincidence, maybe he say that article and got super motivated :)

His fts are a tad concerning but his mechanics on his 3 ball look sound. Flashing the step back too was nice he seems comfortable with the ball in his hands especially ont he break.

Bring him up to the big leagues next year have him run in summer league and with Maine on a two way. Loving his development tho.

I really think it's more about O'Quinn's departure. He used to have small guards on him but he couldn't really take advantage of the mismatch by taking them down low to abuse them in the post because O'Quinn and Kamagate were already setting shop there. Now, he is often matched up with bigger guys so he has a big quickness advantage and with the lane being decluttered he can finally play his slashing game (18FTA, 16 fouls drawn in his last three games). I think the confidence to play his game is showing up in his improved perimeter shooting (even if he'll come down to earth some). I'm trying not to get too excited but I'm really curious to see what he could do with NBA spacing and shooting around him where he'll have even more room to attack. It's worth noting that he finished really hot from three last year so maybe he has a little Tatum syndrome of needing a few dozen games to get his jumper going

I'll try to write the report for the game tomorrow. He has another game tomorrow actually but I don't know when I'll be able to make the report for that one.

In the meantime, here are some highlights from his last game. Here he can be seen practicing his lobs to Rob:
Read on Twitter

And there he makes two huge plays in the 13-0 run from Paris to come back from down 8 with 2 minutes to go (making a three with the foul and grabbing the offensive board after a missed free throw before finding Kamagate for the dunk):
Read on Twitter

The boxscore credits him with a single assist for the entire game so I'll let you decide which one didn't count :nonono:

The platform where I'm watching the games is super laggy today for some reason. I'm also pretty busy next week so I don't think I'll manage a writeup of Begarin's last couple games sorry.

The boxscore from the Strasbourg game we discussed earlier: https://www.lnb.fr/elite/game-center-resume/?id=24047

The boxscore from the Gravelines game today: https://www.lnb.fr/elite/game-center-resume/?id=24057
Not his most efficient game but he did a pretty good job of stuffing the stat sheet and staying agressive (6 fouls drawn including a couple of and ones, but gotta make those free throws). Another comeback win for Paris as they were down eight at some points of the fourth. Up 3 with 24 seconds left, Begarin blocked a three pointer to preserve the lead.

Love the comp too. I can see it now. A bigger Spree would be awesome.

I lived in SF when Sprewell came to the Warriors. He was a surprise pick but us fans at the summer league games knew right away that he was going to be very good. Amazing defensive player that grew his offensive game.

Begarin has missed the last few games because of injury but I haven't been able to found out what is the issue exactly. Anyway there's four games left in Paris Basketball season and they would need to win out just to have a chance of making the playoffs (they won't). May 17th should be the last game of his season so I'm guessing we'll see him in Boston and/or have updates about his next steps fairly soon.

Return to Boston Celtics
