Lottery Pick Boosts Ticket Sales in Memphis
On the day after the Grizzlies experienced their luckiest draft lottery day since arriving in Memphis, they were rewarded at the box office.

The Grizzlies' ticket sales staff was more active Wednesday than in each of the past two years on the day following the draft lottery.

"It's looking a lot better. I think people are excited about where we are, and where we can go with this pick," Griz owner Michael Heisley said. "We've got two first-round picks this year and two next year. And you're sitting there with two guys who made the All-Rookie team. ... All I'm doing is working the plan."

Melo Twists Ankle; Says Fine for Game 3
"To get one on the road is always tough. We came in and got it," Anthony said. "We're mentally tough and we showed that in this game, coming off the loss that we gave away in Game 1."

Anthony twisted his ankle in the game, but he said he would be fine for Game 3 Saturday in Denver.

Strained calf continues to be a pain for J.R. Smith
J.R. Smith gutted through Game 2 the best he could with a strained right calf, and though he said he felt all right after the game, it was clear Smith wasn't in top form.

Smith, who played 24 1/2 minutes, finished with three points on 1-of-6 shooting (1-of-4 from the 3-point line). He had four rebounds with three assists and three turnovers.

He began the game with a sleeve over the calf. He shed the sleeve — and an arm sleeve — at halftime in hopes of playing better, but it didn't work out.

Thunder to Schedule Workout with Rubio
A Web site report on Thursday suggested Oklahoma City might now be facing a sizeable concern regarding 18-year-old Spanish point guard sensation Ricky Rubio.

But the Thunder is in the process of scheduling workouts with all the players it is considering with the third pick in next month’s draft, including Rubio. The Thunder has not encountered any issues with Rubio or his representatives regarding playing in Oklahoma City, contrary to a report on the Web site Draftexpress.com.

The holdup in scheduling Rubio’s workout most likely stems from the fact that Rubio’s DKV Joventut team is still playing in the postseason.

The Web site, citing "people around the league,” reported Rubio’s camp might already be "sending out feelers” that he’s not interested in playing in either Memphis or Oklahoma City. "Rubio doesn’t want to go to Memphis, and he especially does not want to pay money out of his own pocket with that huge buyout for the honor of doing so,” the Web site reported, quoting an unnamed person. "(Dan) Fegan wants him in L.A., and if he can’t have him there, he wants him in Sacramento. Definitely not Oklahoma City.” The Grizzlies have the second overall pick. The Kings will pick fourth. But Rubio, a top three prospect, isn’t expected to fall past the third pick.

The report didn’t go on to give a reason why Fegan, Rubio’s Los-Angeles based agent, wouldn’t want his client in either city. Fegan on Thursday couldn’t be reached for comment on the report, but the Thunder’s front office has had positive communication with every agent who represents a projected top-five pick. Aaron Goodwin, the agent who represents Kevin Durant and projected lottery pick DeMar DeRozan, said the Thunder likely should never be affected by public stances from draft-eligible players who say they don’t want to play in the city. "A general manager and an owner are not going to succumb to an agent saying, ‘If you select my player he’s not going to come here,’” said Goodwin, co-founder of Seattle-based Goodwin Sports Management. "If a GM does, he won’t be a GM much longer.”

Pistons work out draft possibilities
The Pistons completed their first week of workouts for draft-eligible players. George David, director of player personnel for the team, said 20 players worked out, and most were players the Pistons would consider with their three second-round picks.

The workouts were closed to the media, and David would only release 10 names. Of those, only two would be considered for the first-round pick (15th) -- Arizona small forward Chase Budinger and Kentucky shooting guard Jodie Meeks.

The others: Temple shooting guard Dionte Christmas, Miami (Ohio) and Grosse Pointe South graduate Michael Bramos (small forward-shooting guard), Alabama-Birmingham shooting guard Robert Vaden, North Carolina small forward Danny Green, Marquette small forward Wes Matthews, French point guard Nando De Colo, Gonzaga point guard Jeremy Pargo, and Miami point guard Jack McClinton. Besides the 15th pick, the Pistons also select 36th, 39th and 44th in the June 25 draft.

Ex-Piston Chris Ford interviews for 76ers job
Former Pistons guard Chris Ford, a pro scout with the Philadelphia 76ers who was interim coach five years ago, has interviewed for the team’s head coaching job.

A person with knowledge of the interview said today that Ford was one of two candidates team president Ed Stefanski did not announce. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because Ford’s interview was not disclosed. Stefanski also did not say he had talked to Villanova coach Jay Wright, who acknowledged the interview but withdrew from consideration today.

Ford has head coaching experience with the Celtics, Bucks, Clippers and 76ers. He was drafted by the Pistons in 1972, and played for Detroit until 1978. He also played for Boston (1978-82). The team announced four other candidates interviewed: former Wizards coach Eddie Jordan, Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau, Lakers assistant Kurt Rambis, and Mavericks assistant Dwane Casey.

Detroit Pistons conclude first week of workouts
Getting to know the game of each player brought in for a workout is essential to George David, Detroit's director of player personnel. But he also understands the importance of getting to know them better as a person. "We've had success with high character people here," David said. "Because of that ... it's not something that Joe D. or myself or anyone within the organization is going to slack on."

Having good guys always help, but the Pistons are in desperate need of an upgrade in talent at just about every position. David said there were 20 players in this week for workouts. Of the group, only a couple - small forward Chase Budinger of Arizona and shooting guard/small forward Jodie Meeks of Kentucky - are projected as players the Pistons would seriously consider selecting with the No. 15 pick. In addition to their first-round pick, Detroit also selects No. 36, No. 39 and No. 44 in the second round.

Some others who worked out for Detroit this week include: Shooting guard/small forward Michael Bramos of Grosse Pointe North and Miami of Ohio; shooting guard Dionte Christmas Temple; shooting guard/small forward Robert Vaden of University of Alabama-Birmingham; Budinger; small forward Danny Green of North Carolina; point guard Jack McClinton of the University of Miami; Meeks; small forward Wes Matthews of Marquette and point guard Jeremy Pargo of Gonzaga. Due to the NBA pre-draft camp in Chicago next week, David said there won't be any workouts scheduled until the first week of June.

Leap of Faith
EDITOR’S NOTE: Pistons.com continues its draft series with the second of a dozen profiles of players who figure to be under consideration by the Pistons for their pick at No. 15 in the first round of the June 25 draft. Today’s installment looks at Wake Forest forward James Johnson. Teams in the market for a power forward in the 2009 NBA draft are going to have to take a leap of faith – at least teams other than the Los Angeles Clippers. The Clippers beat the lottery odds to snare the No. 1 pick, which means they’ll get the player scouts view as the one sure thing in this draft, regardless of position – Oklahoma power forward Blake Griffin. After Griffin, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. DeJuan Blair probably stands about 6-foot-7 and plays below the rim, even though he was tremendously productive in the Big East for Pitt. Then there are three other players – Louisville’s Earl Clark, Gonzaga’s Austin Daye and Wake Forest’s James Johnson – who some see as small forwards, some see as power forwards, a few see as potential stars and others see as tweeners with cloudy futures. To be sure, there is much to like about Johnson. He’s about 6-foot-8, maybe 6-foot-9, and a solid 245 pounds. He’s above average athletically, though less than freakish. He’s got a long wing span, a nice shooting touch and fine ballhandling ability. It sounds a lot, in fact, like the way you’d describe Walter Sharpe, the roll of the dice the Pistons took in last June’s draft, trading out of the first round by a few spots to pick up an extra second-round pick when they didn’t see anyone at 27 that intrigued them.

But Johnson does have two years of a resume at Wake Forest to recommend him. He averaged 15.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks a game for the Deacons, shooting an impressive .542 from the floor. He isn’t shy about shooting it beyond the arc, either, and has good form on his jumper, though – like most young players – the consistency on his perimeter shot isn’t there yet. Johnson shot .319 from the arc. He actually took more as a freshman than a sophomore, though he was more accurate this season. Johnson came out of Cheyenne, Wyo., hardly known for producing high school basketball talent, and flew under the radar. Scouts are going to have to decide how much room for growth he has, weighing the fact that only within the last few years has he faced high-level competition against his age. At 22, Johnson is significantly older than most college sophomores. But he’s undeniably gifted. Over a three-game stretch late in Wake Forest’s season against ACC foes Georgia Tech, Duke and North Carolina State, Johnson averaged 26 points and 13.3 rebounds a game.Johnson is a devotee of mixed martial arts – not watching them, participating in them. His athleticism is revealed in his ability to do back flips, his footwork and strong hands evident from his skill as an MMA fighter.

How that translates to basketball ability is something scouts will be asking themselves. Pistons strength training guru Arnie Kander is masterful at integrating physical components stressed in activities outside of basketball into the whole of a basketball player’s makeup, so he’ll be able to assess the value of Johnson’s unique MMA skills to his future as a basketball player. But it at least speaks to his fearlessness. As a teen-ager, he filled in at the last minute when an event card short on participants needed someone to take on a skilled and experienced MMA fighter. Johnson’s Wake Forest team, which rose to No. 1 in January, ended the season in a downward spiral that saw them bounced from the ACC tournament’s first round by Maryland and the NCAA tournament’s first round by lightly regarded Cleveland State. And the Deacons were seen as having three lottery-worthy players – in addition to Johnson, sophomore point guard Jeff Teague (another player we’ll profile in this series) and freshman big man Al-Farouq Aminu (who probably would have gone higher than his teammates but chose another year at Wake Forest). Whether Wake’s second-half collapse will reflect poorly on Johnson … well, that’s another question scouts are going to have to ask themselves.

Selling Points – Yesterday’s “tweener” is today’s coveted versatility. Johnson has the ballhandling and shooting skills to play the three and the size and athleticism to play near the rim. … His ability to be at times dominant in the ACC suggests he’ll be ready to step into an NBA rotation immediately and eventually become an above-average starter. … The competitiveness that drove him into mixed martial arts should serve him well in the NBA. … He’s got innate scoring and rebounding ability that should translate to the NBA.

Buyer Beware – Some question Johnson’s basketball IQ. … One of the theories advanced to explain Wake’s late-season pratfall was players like Johnson and Teague were concerned about showcasing their skills for NBA scouts and put team needs second. … Johnson’s advanced age will cause some GMs to downgrade him; for others, it will be of little concern. … Can he guard legitimate power forwards in the post? Can he stay in front of upper-echelon small forwards on the perimeter?

76ers interview former head coach Chris Ford
Chris Ford, a pro scout with the Philadelphia 76ers who was interim coach five years ago, has interviewed for the team's head coaching job.

A person with knowledge of the interview said Friday that Ford was one of two candidates team president Ed Stefanski did not announce publicly. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Ford's interview was not disclosed. Ford has head coaching experience with the Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers and 76ers. His longest stint was five seasons with the Celtics from 1990-95, where he compiled a 222-188 record, his shortest run a 12-18 mark as interim coach of the Sixers in 2003-04. Ford played 10 seasons in the NBA with the Celtics and Detroit Pistons and was a member of the Boston's 1981 championship team.

For sale: Bobcats owner Johnson seeking buyer
After losing tens of millions of dollars, the first black majority owner of a major professional sports team is exploring selling the Charlotte Bobcats.

Bob Johnson's decision could pave the way for minority investor Michael Jordan to take control of the team -- if he's willing to meet Johnson's price.

The NBA confirmed Friday that Johnson is using a New York-based sports financial services firm to seek additional investors. Jordan said in February that he'd be interested in someday getting majority control of the team.

Grosse Pointer among 20 players at Pistons' predraft workout
A local product was among the 20 prospects to visit the Pistons this week for predraft workouts and interviews.

Michael Bramos, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound shooting guard from Grosse Pointe North, was among those trying to impress somebody enough to get his name called June 25, the night of the NBA draft. Bramos just completed a four-year career at Miami (Ohio) during which he scored more than 1,500 points. More of a scorer than a shooter, Bramos likely would be a candidate for one of the Pistons’ three second-round picks or as a summer-league invitee.

Among other Pistons invitees this week were Arizona forward Chase Budinger and Kentucky shooting guard Jodie Meeks. Budinger and Meeks could potentially be selected by the Pistons with their first-round pick at No. 15, but that’s considered a longshot. Being juniors, both also could choose to return to school.
