WILT CHAMBERLAIN & BILL RUSSELL ARE THE ONLY PLAYERS TO BLOCK AT LEAST 25 SHOTS IN AN NBA GAME

Nate Thurmond's career best:

23!? Crazy!

How did you find this data? Do you have a newspaper clipping or DVD/game footage? Something else?

Are you in touch with NBA Archives? They don't seem to be cooperative.

No 3pt line helped inflate their block totals

In his first NBA game, a 118-109 victory at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 24, 1959, Chamberlain had 43 points and 28 rebounds plus 17 blocks.

In Philadelphia’s next game and home opener, the big man had 36 points, 34 boards and nine blocks against Detroit.

In his third, it was 41 points and 40 rebounds against Syracuse.

Rookie Wilt Chamberlain records 10 blocks against the Lakers.

• 52 PTS
• 20 REB
• 10 BLK

(Jan 6, 1960)

Read on Twitter

In his first NBA Season Wilt Chamberlain set the NBA record for;
Most MPG by a Rookie
Most BPG by a rookie
Most PPG by a Rookie
Most RPG by a Rookie
Most MPG by an MVP (46.4 MPG)
Most PPG by an MVP (37.6 PPG)
Most RPG by an MVP (27.0 RPG)

63 Years later no MVP has ever averaged higher numbers.

While I do agree that having no 3pt line helped inflate their block totals a lot

It should be noted that in Wilt's last regular season at age 36 that he averaged over 5BPG and he upped that number in the postseason.

;t=16s

Wilt especially in his later years with LA was basically a defensive god under the rim.

Through he had a habit of struggling against big man that could shoot such as Reed and Dave plus debusschere.

Sure, only without me you wouldn't have all these amazing Wilt clips and videos on YouTube now. Look at the footage available before 2018, there was less than half of what is available now.

I have contacted NBA Archives several times, with no effect. They never decided to work with me, even after a long mail conversation.

If you indeed are in touch with them, then could you tell me how it works? Do you ask them for footage and they give it to you? Or do you ask them for block numbers and they give them you? Who do you contact?

You can ask them for footage but there are rules.

One you must have the family's permission to see the footage or the player's permission

Two it must be for educational purposes such as writing a book and you can't share it online

Three you must pay a fee.

Wilt's database is interesting as the NBA has watched his games and tracked his blocks and steals.

For what purpose they are doing this I don't really know.

But I do know that Wilt's and Kareem's databases are the most requested by people within in NBA circles.

In this article, they say that he has "claimed" 9 blocks against Detroit. This suggests that it's not from game footage, but rather some newspaper account.

I have no doubt they have a lot of Wilt footage and they work on it, but I have also no idea for what if they don't use it.

Do you still have the contact with them? Have you managed to get anything from them? I collected some money and we could work out something.

In retrospect, I will say that having more shots taken near the rim & most of the scoring done by the post player did increase their shot-blocking opportunities to a large degree, nonetheless, Wilt Chamberlain still led the league in blocks per game more than anyone else in NBA history, before or since.

I mean, in retrospect, one could just as easily assert that today's increase in scoring is due more to lax defensive rules, 3pt line emphasis, more so than increased pace.

In some aspects I would assert even more so, believe it or not, that the block avg/tot in that era are actually, in another sense, deflated when one accounts for:

1) 3rd degree murder schedule (3, 4, 5, & sometimes 6, & 7, games in as many nights)
2) No trainers traveling with the team
3) No nutritional specialists
4) Reserve(more like slave) clauses for every player
5) No free agency until early '70s
6) limited rest for every player in between many games(why do you think Wilt of all people was unfairly maligned for not practicing as often as his critics insisted he should?)
7) overt racism & bigotry, not just in the arenas, but also in management & ownership as well
8) Converse tennis shoes(I haven't worn those in I don't know how long)
