My girlfriend and I are moving to Charlotte in September. Her job is based in Waxhaw so we're looking to stay on the south side of Charlotte if possible. Any recommendations for neighborhoods? Not buying right off, but renting. Open to places not in south Charlotte. Houses or townhomes only, no apartments. Just looking for some ideas I can look into. Thanks!

I'm situated in the Matthews/Stallings area right around 485. I believe Fats is too.

As far as housing/townhome options for renting south of Charlotte - what's your price point?

Most of the area in close proximity to the 485 loop on the south side is pretty affluent, meaning lots of nice places but also relatively pricey.

Are you guys amenable to satellite towns south of Charlotte city limits but north of Waxhaw like Weddington? Whereabouts will you be commuting?

Her job is in Waxhaw, I run an ebay store so I work from home. Probably up to $1250 per month? Roughly, at least. Open to different areas. Was looking heavily at the Pineville area.

Edit: I know my way around Charlotte decently. I live in Spartanburg, SC currently. I'm in Charlotte every Monday...it's just hard to know the city that well if you're only there once a week.

For the south side of Charlotte your best bets for that price range would probably be Matthews/Stallings/Indian Trail area or the Pineville/Ballantyne/Indian Trail area. Everything in between those two area on the south side gets a pricey.

There are a ton of new apartments going up in Ballantyne, which might help keep prices of some of the townhomes in the area down. There are a lot of 2 bedroom townhouses in the Ballantyne area that are a little older (90s early 00s) that can be rented for around 1200-1300 a month. The good thing about the Ballantyne area is there are a lot of townhouses built in between the bigger houses. I'm not so sure about there being that many townhouses in other parts of south Charlotte.

You can probably forget about Weddington/Marvin area. Pretty much everything around Weddington/Marvin area is homes starting at 600K. I assume people from Weddington lock their car doors when they drive into Ballantyne.

My mom lives in Stallings and its a nice little community. Apparently they have a huge overflow of tax money right now (they raised taxes higher than they needed) and they'll be spending a lot of it on cool stuff for the town. It doesnt have near the amount of traffic that you'd find in Pineville, Matthews or Ballantyne and since you have no need to commute into Charlotte since you work at home and your wife works in Waxhaw you'll enjoy the quieter area. If you get into Union County, just over the line you'll get savings on taxes.

If you have kids? Ballantyne area probably has better schools, but I think pretty much everything in south Charlotte would be OK compared to other areas of Charlotte.

One other suggestion would be Indian Land which is in SC, just over the border, closer to Waxhaw than Ballantyne and probably cheaper, but still nice. They keep building down 521 into SC, there is no shortage of new housing and new townhomes in that direction.

The downside to Pineville is the traffic. Everything in Pineville is bogged down by the traffic on Hwy 51/485/South Blvd. Also, traffic heavy around Carolina Place mall.

Anything in Matthews near Independence/Hwy 74 is also pretty bad with traffic.

Traffic in Ballantyne around Johnston/521/485 is a nightmare at peak hours, but the secondary roads are a breeze.

But, as long as you aren't trying to go anywhere at 8AM or 5PM all of those places are manageable.

Haven't had Bill Spoons, but plenty of Rock Store and QC. Just MHO but Rock is pretty pretty good, but I don't really count it as special. QC is *slightly* better and offers a lot more choices - from sauces to outright alternatives - but it's a lot more expensive. If I just want a good value meal I still go to Rock. If I want to eat out sit down style, especially with finicky kids, I'll go to QC.

Spoons is a lot like Rock Store, just been around much much longer. Its on the simple side of things, simple menu, paper plates, low prices, great BBQ.

My sister just moved to Korea so my family house in Indian Land might be for rent lol. I do think IL has a lot to offer as far as location and price goes. Check down Harrisburg Rd (the connecting road to Pineville). Pineville is more of a smaller, older town so I personally wouldn't live there, though they do have a solid mall and good shopping for your lady. Ballantyne would be nice. Right next to Pineville, but younger and "nicer" with a lot of food and shopping (even down into the Stonecrest area). Closer to town is going to give you less return on investment.

Any of those places are within 15 minutes of anywhere in Charlotte and are all built around the three major thoroughfares 77,85,485

In what amounts to what I personally view as a not-so-random act of hilarity, I picked up my first ban in the 7 years I've been here thanks to, you've guessed it, tsherkin. Apparently (not really), he's allowed to make baiting comments towards me not relating to the topic of discussion with zero repercussions, yet when I return the favor, I get banned from RGM.

Nothing like the resident holier than thou member to hide behind his moderator shield and boot people while enjoying life in the "you can't touch me" crowd to remind me why I don't post on the GB anymore and why I need to update my blocked users list.

EDIT: apparently mods cannot be blocked. fantastic! Even more reason to avoid the Gen board

tsherkin is the #1 reason r/nba is my go-to for basketball talk. When someone makes a snarky comment at me, I'm not good at shutting up, and of course returning the favor to him results in suspension from the boards and a ban from the GB. You guys and the T&T board are the only reason I haven't gotten my account banned from here by telling him to go **** himself.

This exact thing happened to me posting in the finals thread during game 3.

I haven't ventured onto the general board in months...maybe a year.

Though I have a direct link to this forum on my phone, and seldom go anywhere else.

Honestly it seems like consoles are morphing into subpar PC territory. XB1 & PS4 play games at 1080p. The new PS4 Neo & Xbox Scorpio will be able to play the same games but at resolutions somewhere between 1080p to 4k.

Xbox Slim is just a smaller Xbox One with 4k support. It comes out in august and you can pre order it now.

Xbox Scorpio will be out next year and will run games at higher resolutions.

Thats coming out later this year.

The new Xbox, Scorpio, next holiday 2017.

Sony will likely respond tonight with the PS4.5

From what I'm reading, it's not as much a new system as it is another expansion on the One. Hopefully that's correct because I'd be pissed if I only got two years out of the One.
