Love is gonna want out. Now sure Portland can put together a good package for him, but this also takes CLE firmly out of the running for Melo I would assume.

If anything happened to CLE, shame we traded that pick.

For the record, I think trading the pick was a good idea. This was our last year to get young talent, now it's time to compete.

I was one of only a couple of dissenting voices when that swap went down. I said it then and I'll say it again, anything can happen. If Kyrie gets traded and it starts a landslide toward a rebuild in CLE, the Blazers will have likely lost out on a much better pick...

Having the another pick for 2017 made for options, especially after getting the #20 Memphis pick from Denver ... thank you, Denver. Olshey (reportedly) went after Paul George ... KP went elsewhere (and I like Oladipo and D. Sabonis). By having Cleveland's 26, Blazers get Swanigan. It's early, really really early, yet ... but I'd want Swanigan vs. the protected, potentially higher pick in next year's draft.

I can't remember...did that Cleveland pick have any protection on it?

OK, I looked up the original trade and it was top-10 protected. I don't know if that same protection was conveyed when the pick was moved forward a draft

I'm not sure I'd assume...yet...that next year's Cleveland pick would be much better. Just because Irving has asked for a trade doesn't mean Cleveland will grant the wish. And the Cavs might get some very good player(s) for Irving if they do trade him. Besides that, the Cavs kind of slumped a bit last season; next season Boston will be better but the rest of the East hasn't really got much better. Hayward went from west to east, but several other similar caliber players went from east to west. And of course, the Blazers still have Meyers Leonard as he hasn't demanded a trade yet...so, west wins balance of power for now

Making comparisons after next year's draft, even with this summer's action and next season and ... conditions have changed with taking the pick. Since we don't have access to the parallel universe, the conclusions only go so far.

Even though I liked getting the pick at the time (for a supposedly good draft), and I still like the move, other arguments for delaying getting that pick are more than reasonable.

Agreed on it being too early for assumptions. You have to trade on expectations as well.

At the time of trading, and considering Kyrie, Love and Lebron were all under contract for 2017-18 (and still are), there was probably a 90% chance the pick was going to be 27+, and a 10% chance the pick was going to be 20-22 (let's be honest, the East is a walk in the park).

The expected value of the pick would likely be in the same kind of range that the pick was in this year, if not worse, bearing in mind that we could have had 24/25/26 (maybe even 23) if the ping pong balls fell the right away. I'm very happy we have Biggie.

I think I'd rather trade Turner than Meyers if any Melo (or Anderson) deal went through.

I think ET is overpaid by about 5M per year. Roughly half of Meyers annual contract. Plus with Meyers we are well and truly selling at the absolutely lowpoint of his value. He could do nothing next year, and be less of a toxic contract than the current state:

1) 3/31M is quite a bit worse than a 2/22M contract
2) He played really bad and had injuries last year. Surely he's got to improve on that .

Trading Leonard now is at a low point. Absolutely. And building value would be good ... if he plays. I want to hope that he's healthy and takes a leap forward as a center ... looks like he will get that opportunity.
But if he's traded, good luck, Meyers.

Seeing what kind of deals are being tossed around these days, i.e. Wall just agreeing upon a 4 year, 42.5M per year contract, at least we know that if Lillard or CJ even wanted to be traded (or we felt a rebuild was necessary), we should get a boat load back given their cheap contracts, which both have 4 years left on them. Particularly Dame's, which is a bargain.

I know recent history hasn't been to favourable to dealing stars, but we could definitely get a decent haul at the very least, for each player if it came to that.

Hopefully Nurk can take this team to the next level though.

I imagine Cleveland will wait until next year to trade Kyrie if they do at all. They'll see what LeBron decides to do and might be able to entice him to stay if they get a great package for Irving.

Irving for Melo

And, here we go.

Ian Begley: Knicks, per sources, would consider including Melo & future 1st-rounders in package for Kyrie. Porzingis not being offered at the moment. – via Twitter IanBegley

Yeah, Cleveland isn't going to do that at all. It's a terrible package.

I would expect Irving to be traded by early August.

1. Cleveland needs to know if Lebron intends to stay. IF he's anything less than a done deal ... oops. Assuming he gives a reassurance, they need to work with him. He can stay out of decision making publicly, but if he doesn't "take ownership" of reforming the team ... oops.
2. Irving's contract is "small" ($18.9 / $20.1 / player option $21.3), and he's only 25.
3. This also allows for any cleaning up of Cleveland's contracts and balance (as they don't "have to " trade him and certainly not to desired locations). Including any less than optimal contracts in a deal will be the price of getting a top point guard on the cheap.

In other words, the owner and new GM cannot squander this chance. Proactive moves versus doing nothing helps show James he won't be wasting his time by staying. Kyrie Irving should've been gone at draft time when players (Butler, George, etc.) were available. If people knew he wanted out ... that will not over well with James. Irving may have been a friend to James ...

AS to Houston ... if they want Carmelo Anthony, they need to sweeten that deal immediately and convince NY that Irving is not headed their way ... not an easy task. Nice for a ton of free agents that got their deals done because the Irving sweepstakes changes the environment.

I don't know. I mean, I know it's a terrible package, but I can't say for sure they wouldn't do that. I'm just not sure they're really gonna be in line to get great return for him. With PG being a fairly flooded market and the fact that the teams that'll be interested in him probably don't have a ton of assets, it's just gonna be tough for them to find a massively impressive haul for him if they do decide to trade him.

Side note, it's funny how quickly people forget just how awful those Kyrie led Cavs teams were before LeBron returned. In terms of pure talent and skill, they're pretty even imo, but Dame made the Blazers a playoff team from basically Day 1, even with teams that had no business being a playoff contender. Kyrie's teams on the other hand, those things were hot garbage. Not sure I'd be excited about him coming in to lead my team, but he would be good paired with someone else. He and Porzingis would be kinda fun.

Whatever happens, I just hope he stays East.
