it sucks to lose but seeing quick play like this makes me happier than a win. we're so desperate for a guard who can score. kid is looking like he's one of the best players in the draft.

This was a crap offseason for guards. Without overpaying FVV or DJ, Payton was the best option with the corpse of Teague after him.

For a team that doesn’t want to hand out multi year commitments and doesn’t have the draw of being a winner you are severely limited. With all that considered I think Elf was the right choice, even if it’s hard to watch.
I would even take Galloway over Payton
I had the impression Galloway was a poor passer more of a SG. Point being, when you look at that list the options were few. I wouldn’t want Galloway. Don’t want Payton either, there simply were bad guards available this offseason.

we can’t look at every trade in a vacuum like every player is just a movable asset for value.
That’s cool but it’s either you invest in Randle or you invest in Obi, you can’t keep both.
They can’t both be on the same team long term.
Trade Obi then.. or bring him off the bench until he’s showing he looks like he belongs. I take real issue with trading a young all star to accommodate a guy who looks like even if he finds his footing will probably be lucky to even reach the level of that all star you traded.. and he’s not even that young compared to the all star you’re sending out

Quickly
Burks
RJ
Randle
Mitch
should be the standard going forward, and I think Payton would actually help playing with Rivers off the bench because in my opinion Rivers and Quick are actually not a good mix together off the bench.
yeah. you do this lineup and whip the guards into shape on defense. seems far too simple. better than praying for shooting and spacing that isn't going to come with elf dominating the PG minutes... under the guise of great defense... regardless of what kind of locker room presence he may be. sadly, he's a solid backup and that's how we should apply him.

in the grand scheme of things this L isn't a big deal. quickley hitting his stride is major.
he's always had the mettle and supreme confidence and should be rewarded. period. PLUS he's better than his alternatives.

I rarely care who starts but for the love of god Quickley has to be playing more minutes than Payton.
Part of the problem is Thibs wild rotations in general--sticking with most of the first unit for the entire first quarter. With any other coach I'd say if you want to start Payton for whatever stupid reason, give him six minutes to start the game and the 9-5 minute mark stretch in the 2nd quarter. Play him 18-20 minutes a game and Quickley gets the rest. Thibs is incorrigible though so really you need him to start Quickley. If not he's bound to leave Elf in there for 10-12 minutes straight to start the game.

he doesn't really play, you might be able to get him for cheap
At this point adding him in to the mix may just cause more issues, unless we can get rid of Payton somehow. Always liked Gallo but not really a big difference maker anyway.

its tough for me to fully buy into winning when the organization still feels Payton gives them the best chance to win.
IQ playing well really helps. I might not see him as a full time PG...but whatever his role is...he can score from the guard position at all 3 levels and can get to the FT line...and we haven't had that in forever.

Re: PG: knicks blazers - thibs you got some splaining to do!
Hezi might be right that in the long run IQ could be a microwave scorer off the bench but right now he’s clearly the best PG we have on the roster. Like I don’t want to blame Payton completely for Dame doing Dame things but you need to bring me something on offense end. The guy dropped 30 in the first half and I’m not asking you to go toe to toe with him but it has to be better than 8/3/2. Thibs needs to make adjustments before half time. We’re a defensive team and as soon as the Blazers come out nuclear hot from outside you need to do something. We clearly need a zone busting line up cuz even though we weren’t terrible offensively in the first half we need more fire power. We weren’t getting stops and RJ just got into foul trouble, just bring in the shooters. Something like IQ, Burks, rivers or Knox, Randle, and Mitch. You can’t let them play zone an entire half it’s kinda embarrassing.

Granted I haven’t watched a ton of the other rookies but I have been following them in the box scores. I really can’t remember anyone else having games like this. LaMelo’s triple double is really the only thing that comes close to as good. Maybe Deni had a 30 point game too but I’m not 100% on that. If he keeps this up he could be in the running for rookie of the year.

the worst part about that is the knicks will go down early, payton comes out and the knicks make a dent starting to come back. then thibs brings payton back in and if they continue to come back he'll stay in for the rest of the damn quarter. even tho he was part of the deficit in the first place! thibs isn't perfect but the payton thing is his only serious blindspot right now. i think it makes it even more frustrating. if it was fiz you'd just be like "well whatever this guy's a fool anyway."
