I treated my cousin to that LIberty-Sky game last week. He doesn't follow the WNBA, but he liked it so much that he's treating me to Sun-Sky this week. We're both from the 80s-90s era so we really appreciate the play style. I have to say that the day that the WNBA becomes the female version of the modern NBA is the day I stop watching it. I figure I have a few more seasons to go at least, if it does indeed change.

I feel ya. I like how the league is. It's a good balance. If they do things to devalue defense and start favoring certain players over others in terms of officiating its going to suck. Imagine if we start seeing flopping and foul baiting?
I feel like the WNBA is just straight up hoops without the manufactured drama and BS of the NBA.

I really do detest the Aces' offense, no matter how successful it is. I would like Becky to become the first female coach in the NBA so she could get the NBA stuff out of the W lol

The current WNBA has some super teams. New York and Las Vegas had a mini-arms race last season, and then Seattle made some huge moves this off season.
It's not the norm. As recently as 2021, the 6th ranked Chicago Sky won the championship. Most years when the playoffs roll around, it feels like 5-6 teams have a chance. Last year no one expected anyone to get in the way of the Aces or Liberty.
There's typically at least 1-2 teams that are awful due to youth, a strong middle class of teams, and 4-5 contenders.

It's nice to see that the Liberty have carried over all they learned from how to use Jonquel from last years playoff run. Keep her integral to what you do, basically. Stewie and Sabrina will have night where the shot isn't falling, but Jonquel will always be able to physically dominate.

I’ve wondered the same as jc. How did they pull them off? Is it sustainable, and repeatable? The making of the super teams that is.
I’m guessing the punitive cap rules don’t exist in the W, but the differences in roster building and maintaining a squad are lost on me at this stage of fandom.
If it’s driven organically (good drafting, smart trades), I don’t mind a super team. I don’t like the player produced, let’s just steam roll everyone, Lebron-style teams at all though.
Reinsdorf & Co. - sell the team!!

Las Vegas was called a super team last year because that added Candace Parker to a team that had just won a championship. Ultimately though, Candace Parker only played half a season due to injury and the player they traded for (Dearica Hamby) is now having a monster season in LA.
Mostly the Aces built through the draft (Jackie Young, Kelsey Plumm, and A'ja Wilson), and brought in Chelseay Gray as a free agent.
New York got it done somewhat by being a free agency destination. Stewie didn't want to rebuild in Seattle (ironic because it took them 1 season to put it all back together!) and joined a young core in New York that also swung a huge trade to land Jonquel Jones. They basically acquired two recent MVPs in one off-season while already having some good young players.
WNBA teams don't pay much so they don't have much leverage on player control. It's not that rare that a WNBA player who doesn't like their situation will simply take a year off and/or play overseas. The teams have some limited control through contract extensions, but you typically see a lot of player movement, especially from teams stuck in the middle.

Yeah I love the chemistry right now, Jonquel has been our best player overall.
Now if they can just stop getting blasted in 3rd quarters we'll be in business

We kinda got lucky that Stewie wanted to play close to home (Syracuse) and then swinging a trade for Jonquel. I doubt we ever get as lucky as this again which is why the Liberty need to run the table this season Aces be damned

Thanks you two, appreciate the insights. I also read that JJ specified NY as her destination, so you’ve been lucky indeed…2 MVPs steering their way there.
I got off my lazy internet ass and helped answer my own question some too. Looks like it’s much easier to build and maintain a women’s super team.
W supermax % of cap looks to be 16.5%, contrasting with more than double that with men at 35%.
Not really a fan of that. Seems setup to breed the kind of ‘artificial’ super teams I don’t personally like.

Yep ppl sound crazy right now. Parroting Stephen A's garbage. I guarantee they won't talk about this game on First Take today
The Sun dismantled the Fever and stifled CC defensively. I laid out a few reasons why it's not entirely on her in the Fever thread but it is what it is. She's the best player on a really bad, poorly coached team and ppl think she should be gifted an Olympic spot just off of her name alone. No.
