I wanted to ask this somewhere, doing it here because this seems like the most popular thread in this board: have you guys ever done a "retro Most Improved Player award" project, ie, who would be the MIPs before the award was created in 1985/1986?

I tried searching in the stickied threads, wasn't able to find it. Thanks.

Mavs have no shot in winning this with Kyrie playing how he has

Celtics have missed a lot of open threes and they're still up 9.

Celtics are on another level. Was apparent after first half of Game 1. Their only danger is letting the Mavs hang around and steal a game which Luka and Kyrie fully capable of

Jayson isnt playing any better than the 22 finals he averaged 7 Apg that series that ppl forget. Difference is we have Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis now instead of Marcus Smart and Rob Williams

JRue might be the Celtics’ best player this series. He has taken Kyrie’s soul the way he took Lillard’s in 2018.

Been a minute but felt like Wiggins was clamping Tatum in those finals, meanwhile Tatum's just missing stuff he usually does. Weird lack of finishing for example

Also, the clear finals mvp no matter what happens is Brad Stevens.

A few takeaways from game 2:

- Getting a podium game out of holiday when tatum and brown couldn't get into rhythm was timely to say the least.

- Celtics have white on the books for 1 more year at $19.5 mil. He's about to get paid.

- Luka is unreal considering he clearly isn't right and yet still pretty much unstoppable

- Disappointed in kyrie tonight. Yeah he finished with 18 shots but extremely timid at times just standing in the corner.

Still a pretty entertaining game despite a lot of ugly misses. Hoping dallas can make it a long series.

Luka looked visibly tired in just the second quarter. Hard to play this style every possession and stay fresh.

Luka is not 100% but barely anyone is. I dont know why ppl (not you specifically) are acting like hes paraplegic now or something. He did to the Wolves what he did to the Suns in 21 just a week ago. And he had a full week off to rest heading into this series. Hes fine if hes slowing down this series its more cause we actually have a potent offense he has to guard the ball and closeout on shooters where he could hide against the pitiful Wolves offense. Clips were the other series where he had to exert alot of energy defensively

Tatum is crazy versatile defensively. He never really got the reputation as a "defense guy" but it might be the most impressive part of his game to me

He's just a good basketball player period. He's shot poorly in the Finals so far, but he's still leaving his imprint all over everything. And he and Jrue were just so in sync last night. Credit to Jrue for making himself available constantly with smart cuts, but Tatum's finds of him were really good. He just was carving Dallas up.

Holiday has been finals MVP and Dallas flaws are getting exposed, no 3rd option, their two stars being average on D, etc.

Yep. Luckily for those of us rooting for the little Mavs, they haven't gotten a home game yet. Now Boston is a good road team and Dallas isn't a great home team so it might not make any difference at all, but until a home team loses its just a chalk series.

I’m all for recognizing when a player is doing more than scoring well to help their team win, but it doesn’t negate the fact that if you can’t score, and your primary job is to score, then you aren’t playing well. Tatum is definitely not playing as badly as the shooting numbers suggests, because he’s making good reads and he’s playing really good defense. But we aren’t doing him any favors by pretending like that’s top 10 level play or that his passing and defense is anywhere elite enough to offset the terrible shooting.

I think winning bias is at play here. Nobody would be giving Tatum his flowers if his team was down 2-0 or even if it was 1-1 and he played exactly the same way. And his team being up 2-0 has a lot to do with his teammates stepping up and Dallas not really having anyone other than Luka stepping up.

Felt like Tatum was trying his hardest to give the game away in game 2, but Jrue and White stepped up and didn’t let that happen.

I've missed those who are saying he's playing at a top 10 level in the series. I personally just think there is a big meaty gap between top 10 and he's been terrible. And that he resides comfortably in there.

And I think regardless of role differences, he's also contributed a lot more to Boston than Kyrie has to Dallas. Kyrie isn't finding other ways to contribute while his shots are not falling. He's not having the defensive impact he had in earlier rounds, he's had some bad turnovers, and he's not doing a lot of creation.

It's not just Tatum winning good, Kyrie losing bad.
