One thing I want to add:

Guys like Tyler and Thanasis are perfect examples of players who shouldnt have to take up roster spots to keep their rights if sent down to the D League. They both could use some more time down there until they're ready. A team should be able to hold the rights of up to 5 players in the D League, because whats the point of having your own affiliate if most of the team could be signed away at any moment by whoever? We shouldnt have to send Thanasis overseas. Both him and Tyler should be in Westchester learning the system. This is the obvious next step for the D-League.

I think that basically is the basis of a minor league system that has been bandied about by various parties recently. I dont see the drawback of doing that. But the league probably has some reason not to pursue it.

I like Tyler, Thanasis but they're projects for sure. Larkin doesn't impress me.

I bet the players association don't like the idea because the player being called up makes significantly more money and by hamstringing players in the development league those said players may not get the chance to sign to a team that wants or needs them because the team with the rights to them doesn't need them. I have a feeling this gets brought up in the next cba.

Yea I've made that argument too. Maybe a team should only be able to hold a player's rights for 1 year. The point is it would let teams use the D-League as an actual minor league system instead of the clusterf*ck it is. Having players learn their team's systems will make teams put more effort into developing these guys. Right now if Tyler doesnt make the team so we waive him, then add him to our D-League team anybody can just sign him. Meanwhile we have to send Thanasis to Greece to keep his rights without taking up a roster spot.

I'm not sure what to do exactly but there needs to be change. At the very least they should just give each team 2 more players whose rights they could keep.

The D-League hasn't grown enough yet. We're getting closer, but we're still years away from that unfortunately because some teams are stupid. Once the D-League gets over 22 teams, look for some of the rules to change, but also note this has to be collectively bargained, so you can only do this when the CBA negotiations are coming up.

I agree with you guys, the NBA needs a farm system, the only caveat I'd have is 1st rounders should be excluded.

Their money is guaranteed, the teams made these choices and usually sign the rookies higher than their scale.

The major league team should be developing them.

I don't see anyone besides Cleanthony making the team who doesn't already have a contract.
Shannon has to be waived on or before August 1, 2014 or his contract will become guaranteed for the 14-15 season.

Tyler has no guarantee date but will have 100k guaranteed if he is on the roster after September 15th, 2014.

Players in the d league whose rights are owned should be paid second round rookie scale money. That would probably make the players association more amenable to a farm type system.

In a perfect world, the NBA would divert all its capital being expended on the inferior product that is the WNBA and divert it to the D-League instead.

Not mad at that... Needs better teammates (more consistent threats) and yeah he'd be even more awesome

Just skimmed through the Hornet's game thread, because its raining and Im bored. Its funny how much they hate Cody Zeller and think Hairston is on route to being a no defense playing chucker. They raved about Tyler and Hardaway. Goes to show that A) the grass is always greener and B) we actually do have some talent here.

...and to think, we sold Jeremy Tyler for a few thousand dollars, but drafted Cody Zeller in the top-5. I'm not insinuating anything

Jeremy Tyler isn't just looking better, but superior to Cody Zeller right now; even making that jump shot we're hoping Zeller develops

It was $2 million. I complained about it bitterly at the time. It was explained to me that they did it to use the cash to buy out Bismack Biyombo's Spanish team contract.

PS he's been available off the waiver wire since then, including last spring when NYK picked him up, so we coulda picked up him then.

Like I've said Tyler has lotto pick talent. Whether he puts it all together remains to be seen, but the talent is undeniable. Hardaway is praised on pretty much every board I go to, even if some do think he shoots too much. Obviously these posters dont see our guys as much as we do so they dont know their flaws as well, but everyone has flaws. We have some pretty decent young bucks when you consider how we got em.

Phil sounds like a guy that intends to keep Thanasis around to keep the defensive intensity up when Shump goes to the bench.

I have a feeling Fisher will be going with a rather deep rotation this season. At least a 10 man rotation, maybe 12.

C: Dalembert / Aldrich
PF: Amar'e / Bargs
SF: Melo / Early / Thanasis
SG: Shump / JR / Hardaway
PG: Calderon / Prigs or Larkin

Surprised I hear Larkin hate. He looks smart, tough, scrappy. Could be a Barea type.

This offense was made for Tim Hardaway Jr. I would be shocked if he Hardaway doesn't average 15 ppg this season. He understands the defensive angles and how to get to the open spots so well.
