You're dead wrong and you're missing the point entirely. What do you think the Nets will get in trade for a Deron Williams who says, "I will only sign an extension with the Lakers"? They would get half season rental offers from contenders like the Mavs and that's it. Prokhorov took a huge gamble in trading for Deron this year with the thought that by next year's trading deadline the Nets would be sitting strong with a top 4 seed in the East and the idea of Deron being their Brooklyn savior .... well, sorry but I doubt the Nets are even in the #8 spot in the East by next year's deadline and Deron will know that there is no real winning future for him in Jersey or Brooklyn by then and could demand a trade to the Lakers very easily.
am I? If I were prohorok, I rather take NOTHING then to have to take on Pau and pay a 33 yr old 20+mill/yr when the team wont be going nowhere either way.....Melo forced his way to NY because NY could SIGN him straight up, LA can't sign Howard or Deron straight up so either guy can make all the threats they want, their respective team has more leverage over both guys then what happened with Melo.....had NY not been such fools and waited it out Melo and his lil whinny ass would've signed the extension, he can say its "not about the money" all he wants but at the end of the day losing 20+mill over the life of this ext, you could tell his stance started weakening towards the deadline but unfortunately for NY, Dolan is an idiot owner and gave into Den every demand.
