That's kind of what he always looks like more or less. Just his body type.

This is an excuse. Him being in shape isn't related to his body type. No, players like Harden and Melo aren't going to be shredded, and that's due to body type, but his body fat percentage/being in shape are separate issues.

So you can tell if hes in shape or not just by looking at the picture? This is literally how he always looks without a shirt.

He's clearly out of shape. That's evident. You're not in basketball shape with 15-20 % body fat. Nor does he look like that all of the time.

Given the rumors he loves to party, it could be trouble....or he could just lose it all before the season starts. You'd be surprised at how quickly you can cut up with the right training program.

He also could be trying to bulk up. A calorie surplus + off season beer + creatine + weights but no cardio means an increase in water weight and flab. Stop the beer, stop the creatine, and get back to the regular season grind, and he'll have a 6 pack in no time. Bodybuilders are flabby in the off season. They have to add bad weight to "bulk." Then to "cut", they starve themselves to get ready for shows. Seriously starve themselves.

I'm not sure if you were serious or not, but I'll take the bait. Bulk phase doesn't mean stuffing your face with burgers and fries for 3 months and then hitting the treadmill. It just means you up your carbs (brown rice, quinoa, oatmeal, etc), increase healthy fats (almond butter, coconut oil, avocados, etc), more weightlifting, less cardio, but still an otherwise healthy and balanced diet high in protein. The idea is to bulk up on muscle, and you have to add a bit of fat in order to do that. Then when you "cut", your grown muscle is more visible.

What you see in this picture of Harden is not someone who is in a "bulk" phase. It's someone who has let himself go and is taking a break from a healthy lifestyle. He's about to turn 29 years old, he can probably still get away with it. But I can promise you that this seesaw will eventually shorten his career in the long run.

Normal for him. He's Baron Davis 2.0 where he seems to show up to camp chubby and by the start of the season he's in good shape. He likes to live it up in the offseason. My philosophy is... I'd prefer my players always be in shape year round, but as long as you're ready when it's go time, not much you can do.

Who knows. Some guys train year round and get hurt all the time.

Maybe taking a few months off isn't a bad thing for some guys. An elite athlete can cut that amount of chub in a month.

He's what 10 (maybe 15 pounds) heavier than normal there? Definitely not a good look for the MVP (being shirtless obviously isn't helping) but shouldn't affect him much in the short term.

Actually players today are far more conditioned & fit than in MJs era.

In fact Jordan became famous for starting the trend of lifting weights, before him most NBA guys wouldn't even touch the weight room (except for big men like David Robinson.. for guards it was still unheard of at that time)

Lebron spends like $1 mil on his body every year.. and he doesn't stay up all night drinking+smoking like Jordan used to do, so I'd say he's far more conditioned than MJ.
