His style was insufferable. It was like he was calling a horse race.
First off, he was the best in the NBA. He started in radio calling games where you have to set the stage for people who couldn't see the game. Second, he taught you about players and rules while calling the game. He was a treasure, henceforth his statue at Staples Center.

Loved chick Hearn. Listened to him every single game.

He doesn't have any bits of interesting info, doesn't know how to banter w his colleagues, doesn't have any good reflections like other broadcasters do (vin scully) , nothing clever to say or know how to poke fun at himself and just makes the air awkward w Chris Webber. Also he isn't a wholesome dude either. Not sure if any of you are old enough to know about his scandal.
Also, I saw him on tv today the guy's face looks pale and frozen.
I totally disagree with this. I've always enjoyed his banter. He's had me cracking up many times over the years and was always pretty witty in a subtle way.
I agree it's time for him to retire, but he's definitely one of the best to ever do it.

Marv Albert, in his prime, was better than Mike Breen.
I love Breen but he's not Marv.
Let Marv do what he has to do and retire on his terms.
Toi be honest, they should let him call a Finals game out of respect.

I think doing things remotely is making his cognitive declines even more obvious, its been an issue for awhile. Hopefully they do commentary on location in the playoffs, i think that will make things better.

Well, go on, give us some juicy details to really bite into.

overrated
his one good quality is there's a timbre in his voice that's "special". reminds my of lindsay nelson,,,like you're listening to a happening. but marv always struggled for that visceral, in the moment excitement in an attempt to capture that one phrase that lives forever, and frankly,,,,failed. example: his call on the rangers win w/ messier was absolutely flat

Why does he have to sound excited? So what if it was flat, I dont scream at home watching games either.

Marv has been broadcasting since the 60s. The same man who called guys like Walt Frazier is calling today's stars. That's pretty nuts. A guy like that is grandfathered in and should be able to ride this wagon until the wheels fall off as far as I'm concerned.

Semi related, but we boomer Cardinals fans are going through that with a beloved radio guy, Mike Shannon. It's his 50th year in the booth, which is an honor and incredible. I have listened to his voice since he and Jack Buck (who, unlike his obnoxious son, is beloved) were in my ear in the late 80s. I cherish him.
He is also really, really hurting the broadcasts and I wish he'd hang it up. Albert is right there with him. Just too many hundreds of names bouncing around those heads after decades of excellence.

I don't understand why people are defending Marv. He's a disgusting, senile sex offender. Do us all a favor and unceremoniously give him the boot.
It's not dignifying in any way to Marv allowing him to call games on national television as his cognitive functions continue to decline.

He did that stuff in the 80s or 90s, standards were different back then. And regardless, what he did off the court should have no effect on whether he can broadcast games anyway. How does it impact his ability to be a good commentator? It doesn't. That's a separate issue

If your idea of virtue signaling is someone defending another person’s dignity, I can’t imagine the hell hole you must live in.
I don’t virtue signal. I don’t think I possess a unique kind of virtue by stating my point here, & if it came off that way to you or anybody, then you might want to surround yourself with a better group of ppl.
It’s all moot to me anyway. Like I said before...it’s ppl like the OP & yourself that are the first one’s to cry about indignities done toward them anyway.
Maybe it makes YOU feel better pretending it’s not so. If getting told you sound like a child telling old ppl to change their diapers is virtue signaling...it’s not—it’s “grow the f*** up” signaling.
Pretty rich to defend Marv Albert's dignity when he's shown a repeated pattern of not affording the same for a number of victims who have come forward with accusations that show a pretty specific pattern.......
Think you might want to surround yourself with folks that keep you better informed. Like literally, WOOF.

Why can't Bill Cosby still be a good comic and do his job just because he likes raping women?!
Surely you can't be serious. Just because he was able to skirt the problem back then DOES NOT change what he did. The idea that his behavior should be looked past because it happened in the 80s or 90s is baffling in its level of ignorance. Biting women and forced sodomy? Those weren't publicly acceptable things to do in the 80s or 90s. Allowing men to get away with these things when they were accused while assaulting the character of women? That WAS a thing that was done, and it was wrong.
