It depeneds on the circumstances. If he's a syrup drinker (i think the kids call it "purp drink" or something like that) then it's likely an everyday habit. Easier to hide then other drugs but the problem is you can't go a day without it or else u get sick. Which means constant maintenance. Travelling with it. Etc.

I doubt they would waive him if something popped up in a blood test as a one-time thing. It was probably an on-going problem. If they enforced this rule THAT strictly then i'm sure half the league would get suspended.

A regular user would have been noticed by coaching staff, very difficult to hide. The highs and lows are too obvious. But we don't know what the substance was. Athletes using pain management is common. I question assuming we should just trust management that it was more serious than we know. The pattern to date suggests they eliminate any PR issues as soon as possible.

End of day.....he's got an extremely rich amd powerful union looking out for his legal interests. There is 0% chance this was some sort of unfair thing where he was taking prescribed painkillers. The union would grieve the suspension if his case was anything except for obvious and serious. I doubt the league could even getting away with doing this if a player decides to do coke in vegas one night. The union wouldn't let them be that unreasonable.

It's also likely that there were efforts made before it got to this. Ie warnings, offerings for help. Its happened so infrequently for a reason. Im sure lots of players mess around with drugs on that list and occsionally get talked to about it without the suspension being handed down.

The highs and lows of coke and speed are impossible to hide. Not really true with opiates except for when someone is an absolute fiend. Its easy to hide as long as u dont go through withdrawals. Much easier to hide than even alchoholism.

I also think the fact that he was the 59th pick in the draft, but seemed way too good to be the 59th pick in the draft, indicates that there very well may have been off the court concerns.

I hope Jalen gets to a better place mentally during his time in Italy. Everyone makes mistakes in life, its how you handle yourself after that defines you.

Drugs of "abuse". Right there they in crime and punishment culture. Abuse implies reckless behaviour like abusing your pet or spouse or child. If someone has an addiction they simply "use". So... The league needs the union get in the 21st century. Tob corrective not punitive. Another thing. In America and Canada "Benzos" are prescribed for anxiety conditions. In the U.S. and now Canada Ketamin under supervision is administered for depression, PTSD and treatment resistant depression. In Canada there is no duty to disclose your illness nor any prescribed medications to employers. The IOC type approach to athlete drug testing should really be limited to performance enhancing substances otherwise the league could discriminate against employees with health issues. I find sport in general is far too concerned about their public persona and image which may too easily panders to distorted and harmful practices relating to an individual's health and wellbeing.

I agree with everything you said. This NBA policy is a relic of the drug war and how we used to think about drugs. .any parts of our society have moved on now.

Fact is...it's a victimless crime. Yes you can draw abstractions and show that personal drug use impacts on your loved ones. But technically speaking...it's still a victimless crime.

Some ppl who are prescribed opiates can't wait to get off them because they hate feeling groggy and detached. For others....it's the best feeling in the world. We know very little why this is the case....but to punish those for whom the effects are hard to resist isn't the right way to go imo. As long as they aren't victimizing ppl in pursuit of their drug use....a different approach is the humane thng to do.

I hope the Raptors give him a second chance at the end of his suspension. He showed flashes of being and excellent three-level scorer in limited minutes last year, and those aren't easy to find. Very talented kid if he can get his problems under control.

Harris was not waived by the Raptors. The drug policy rendered his contract null and void.

As someone who watched MMA for a long time, if you were to get caught for cheating in the UFC, then went to fight else where in the world? They would never let you come back and fight in America! Ever!

Bruh he got caught for different type of drugs
Yea. Types of drugs that definitely do NOT enhance your performance. Lol.

Ok, so now seems it's more likely Raptors retain his rights. So I'm hoping they keep tabs on him in Euros and give him a spot on summer leagues.

If he comes back a year from now a better more polished player, and clean, it's a bonus. He might be playing summer league for us next year
There goes my hero. Watch him as he goes.

All this blab aside I hope we can lock Jalen into something long term when he's available to come back...

He's a massive sleeper. At minimum can be one of THE best 6th men in the league that you question if he should start...

Nope. We have his rights and he'll most likely be back next year.

Imagine handing out a harsher penalty for using recreational drugs than using performance enhancing drugs in a sport... This is so ass backwards.

I still don't get betting on your own team to win. Why is that a bad thing?
