Re: raptors wnba team
I'd watch, at least the inaugural game.
I've never really followed the WNBA, I don't think I've ever watched two possessions in a row. Maybe it's surprisingly entertaining and I've missed out?
If I could pick the name I'd call 'em the Talons.

Re: raptors wnba team
I don't think I'd watch tbh, for the same reason I don't watch women's soccer or hockey. It's just not as good a product as top tier men's sport. I also don't watch the men's minor leagues for the same reason. If I'm spending my money on entertainment, I want it to be the best, whether it's sports, movies, musicals, or Vegas type shows. But there's certainly a market for B and C tier level entertainment - it's just gotta be cheap, like a lot cheaper.
I do think it would be nice for Toronto to have though, especially for the young girls to have some local female sports role models to look up to. I'm sure the city would get behind them for a championship run, as we have bandwagon fans in every sport, but I doubt it'd be popular enough to sell out major arenas on a consistent basis, which makes me wonder if it'd be a good business decision for MLSE in the short, or even long term.

Re: raptors wnba team
I think it would work just on numbers alone, but in any event: 1, There are probably 100,000 feminists in the city that would go at least once a year and probably 5,000 who on principle alone would get some form of seasons tickets. 2, Big firms and big financial institutions, needing to be progressive and especially if they have boxes, are signing up for WNBA, or they may buy a pair of tickets instead of 10 pairs of tickets, but they will still be buying them. I think it would work by accident, and if you plan it and work it a bit, it will work for certain.
As we know: The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is the most populous metropolitan area in Canada. It includes the City of Toronto and the regional municipalities of Durham, Halton, Peel, and York. In total, the region contains 25 urban, suburban, and rural municipalities.[6] The Greater Toronto Area begins in Burlington in the Halton Region, and extends along Lake Ontario past downtown Toronto eastward to Clarington in the Durham Region.
According to the 2016 census, the Greater Toronto Area has a total population of 6,417,516.[7] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_Toronto_Area
The city has grown since then, but in any event, the average attendance in 2019 was 6,535 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_WNBA_season)
Let's just say you need to double that to break even =13,070
old GTA population as of 2016 is 6,417,516 / 13,070 = 1 in every 491 people needs to show up or so to get that.
Almost assuredly, the banks, insurance companies, and law firms are good for the boxes plus at least 1,000 tickets.

Toronto is almost assuredly the largest city not on that list. By city only population Toronto is assuredly the largest city without a WNBA team only behind Mexico City, New York and LA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_North_American_cities_by_population
By metropolitan area, excluding Mexico City, we are just behind Houston and I do not think Houston has a WNBA team but I think they may have had one in the past.

I found another ranking - not sure I buy it: (NOTE:MAy include Hamilton etc)
his is a list of the largest urban agglomerations in North America. It includes the 50 most populated urban agglomerations.[1]
All estimates come from the websites citypopulation.de and demographia.com.

To get double the 2019 average attendance, or 13,070, you need only one in 585 people to show up.
I think the math works.

What Bandwagoner answer.
You mustve been the ones cheering for Lin when he was a knick and hit the game winner.
lol look at my join date, I've been cheering for this team for a long ass time and watched all 82 games of some horrible raptor teams. I never and would never cheer for the knicks when they are playing against the raptors. Settle down.
Just cause I said I don't want to watch a WNBA team but would watch them in the finals you automatically assume I bandwagon the raptors.

Besides the sympathy money nobody will be supporting it in this city unless its a big brand. I think Masai is now making more than the entire WNBA.
I would begin with Vancouver but the WNBA players probably wont even be able to afford to live there.
A great experiment would be a small metropolis like Winnipeg or Regina. Small towns they would be seen as heroes and may create inspiration for both genders.

Re: raptors wnba team
I swear people are more vocal about bashing the WNBA than literally any other sports league.
Anytime I've ever posted something positive about the WNBA, wanting to support it within seconds I get bombarded with dudes literally writing paragraphs about how terrible it is and how fiscally irresponsible etc...
I have to simply assume anybody who is so openly against it juts doesn't love basketball. Maybe they're NBA fans but I cannot imagine anybody who's spent a lot of time in life playing ball would **** on women's basketball. It really bothers me. I had a best friend starting from elementary school who was this tiny girl and she loved the raps and playing ball. Would literally bring her to every run I went to. She always wanted everyone to play her straight up and they did and they respected her for it and she busted ass and we played together for years.
Use to go to hoop dome as well. Everyone dug her heart, her midrange shot was butter. She got knocked around like Kyle lol but she didn't mind.
I just can't ever imagine not wanting to help support women's basketball just because it hasn't been marked, monetized, or simply formatted in a way that makes it more enjoyable.
Women's MMA went from non existent to massively popular. Women's pro-wrestling went from a sideshow act to literally being some of the mots popular content WWE has. Women's soccer is huge.
Sure, WNBA might take longer to find something that works but everyone just insist on killing it. **** that. I have high school friends that went to have willy successful college careers in the states. Now play in Europe. I just feel it's something work fighting for and supporting. I'm a true basketball nut I've spent thousands and thousands of hours playing against and with men and women of all skill levels.
Am I just crazy? It just feels like no other sport or or even sports entertainment gets so violently shat on.
Kobe was a huge supporter of the WNBA. Clearly we knew how much sharing basketball with his daughter was. I could only dream of having a daughter one day to share the game with. To take her to see a Brittany Griner, Candace Parker, Taurasi.
Like, I feel the basketball world needs to consistently reminded of one of my all time ball hero's, Cheryl **** Miller.
We need to help push the sport forward so that over time the talent can keep improving and we can one day have another like her to not only take the game to new heights, but to be universally respected as one of the greats period. Regardless of gender. She was apparently beating Reggie in games until he was well into college. Many speculate she could've played in the NBA if it wasn't for her knee injury.
Sorry for the rant. I'm just confounded that people who call themselves basketball fans would simply be fine with letting it die off like that.

They will be the Owls (which are raptors), and they'll wear black and gold.
Also, I think Drake is just floating this out to whet appetites a little. This was apparently one of the things Masai wanted MLSE to agree to as part of his ongoing "bigger picture" plans. There is no question this is going to happen, and I suspect they already have a small team of people working in that direction... like Brittni Donaldson, who left her position as Assistant Coach with the Raptors but has been with the 905 this year, which is more in line with the type of work that the WNBA would be like.

Loving basketball doesn't mean we need to watch every basketball product out there. I don't care for euro league and would never take time out of my day to watch it. Does that mean I don't love basketball?
If you love the WNBA then enjoy it but don't bring that virtue signaling crap around here saying people who don't support WNBA don't love basketball. That's like saying people who don't go watch random highschool basketball games don't love basketball.

You'd be hard pressed to find anyone on this forum against having a WNBA team.
Actually following them and watching/attending their games is a whole different matter.

Smaller towns sounds like a great idea, especially ones that have a basketball following already but don't have a national team.

Re: raptors wnba team
I don't have a lot of time to watch sports, I really only watch every Bengals game (Season Ticket Holder)... I might watch 20-25 Raptors games a season. While I love the idea of the WNBA in Toronto to continue the growth of the sport in Canada, I likely wouldn't be a big-time consumer of the product.

Pretty much this.
Was Kobe a huge supporter of the WNBA before or after he had several daughters? Curious to know. He obviously would've been pro whatever would be beneficial for his daughters, as any father should be.
If the GOAT WNBA player could MAYBE have played in the NBA (and probably would've not started), that clearly means that the women are simply not as good at the game as the men. If women were as good as the best men, I'd be more than happy to see them play in the NBA; but they're not. So I don't watch them, for the same reason I don't watch the G league, or Div 2 basketball, or much of Div 1 other than some March Madness, or Euroleague.
You cite Women's MMA and WWE as being popular - I'm not sure, but have they ever had a standalone women's only event? Or have they more often than not, been tied directly to events featuring men, as undercards? Not to say that it's not entertaining, I love watching women's MMA as undercards, but it'd be a very rare occurrence for me to pay UFC money to watch a Women's-only MMA fight. It'd have to be a high-level championship bout, and probably several of them put into some sort of supercard, and I'd have to be betting on the fights - ie similar to a WNBA finals championship that I had a vested interest in (a Toronto team). It's simply my truth, like it or not.
Same thing with women's soccer - does anybody really actually watch them regularly? Or do you mostly just watch the women's world cup, especially when you have a vested interest as a Canadian? Same thing with women's hockey. Just like men's junior hockey, how many people actually watch Junior hockey or women's hockey outside of the world championships, even in Canada, a nation stocked with hardcore hockey fans? If it's an inferior product, the vast majority of sports fans won't pay to support the product. I've watched some games and highlights, and it's simply boring to me, compared to the men's game.
Am I pro-WNBA in Toronto? Yes. I'm sure it'd be good for league stability, the women's game as a whole, the girls and fathers in the city etc.
Would I personally pay money to watch them outside of VERY rare circumstances? No.
Two separate issues here.

Not to crap on the WNBA, but this is the parade route for the Chicago Sky, right before they turn into the final venue. Doesn't seem like a lot of support out there, even for a championship winner in a major city, with one of the GOATs of women's basketball on the team (Candace Parker).
Lots of empty seats at the end of the parade.
It'll take a lot of time and investment to get cities to support a WNBA team, even a winning franchise. I only say this to put it in a relastic frame. Most people just don't really care about the WNBA, and it's not a sexist thing.

this is what pisses me (and i'm sure a lot of people) about people like you. you move with the crowd and what's relevant on that day. drake brought it up so now we should automatically get a team? why didn't you suggest this years ago? why weren't you advocating for this at city hall? maybe call up nav bhatia and see what he thought? did you start a thread about the WNBA finals? no, no you didn't. because you're just a follower going with the crowd, pretending to be woke. now you're posting on a men's basketball forum for your city about a girl that you played ball with to get your point across.
all this virtual signalling from all these woke ass morons from 2020 saying that WNBA players needed to be paid as much as NBA players (remember the millions spent on commercials? LOL) because we're all "equal" were no where to be seen in 2021. stadiums still more than 50% empty and there was a championship parade for whatever team (didn't watch, don't know and i won't pretend to care by even googling it) a few weeks ago. despite all of that, not. a. ****. single. PERSON. on my social media that was doing all this "woke" nonsense a year ago (and there were a few of them, so the sample size is fair enough to bring up in this scenario) even posted anything about it the WNBA this year.
change the attitude, stop telling people to feel sorry for them, make the game more appealing, etc and maybe we can gradually see some change. but forcing this on people is not the answer "if you like basketball then you have to support the WNBA" .. ok bro, you're almost as worse as WNBA players living in fantasy land who think they deserve to get paid $30mil by their company when their company loses $10mil a year.
end rant. i'm tired of it. women's basketball sucks and this is not a knock on women. there's a lot of successful women out there that have done great things either individually or in business, who make more than NBA players.. unfortunately this is one of those things that women-only business can't bring in enough revenue to even operate.

Respectfully, I'll just start by saying I'm absolutely the furthest thing from woke or any of that. I don't often engage in internet activism and if you'll like to have a PM conversation, you'd see that quite quickly. I have never and will never be someone who goes with the masses. I have lived most my life actually as someone who goes against the grain I get what you're saying though and in general, agree with you about those people who really want to push agendas and cases just so that they can feel a part of something thing. I'm telling you, I ain't that. Sorry if I came across as such but this is a basketball forum and there was an active thread about this, I don't think I should be attacked or mislabeled because of an opinion.
If my message came across as - you have to get with this otherwise you're a POS - totally not my intent at all. I typically hate when people push their bull on others. I find the only way to do such things effectively is through conversation that digs through the points and ideas so both sides can learn as much as possible without needing to worry about what side is what.
I totally agree the product is poor. It makes no money. Nobody really cares about it. I would just like to see it succeed in some future and personally would try and support it.I'll never go out and protest for something like this because it's really on the bottom rung of my responisblities in life but I love basketball and would rather there be a stable women's basketball league in North America than not.
Again, last night I just felt pissed off cause I got raided by dozens personally attacking me for just speaking my opinion without directly insinuating that anyone should have to give a ****. Not a single one would've said any of that in person which is why I usually avoid communicating online cause most people just react emotionally or in a vindictive fashion just because it makes them feel good. I prefer not to bother interacting with insects.
Listen, I get everyones arguments. They're valid. No question. I'm just saying me personally I'd rather people (who care to) at a least be open to the possibility of it being improved in the future. Its been done in other sports. I believe it could potential be done with the WNBA. That's all.

Okay- fine- it's a woke, big city, political statement.
Okay- Toronto fits.
It's a political statement that would cost MLSE very little because they can probably at least sell double the league average without too much work. It's a break-even, half the games at the Scotiabank Arena and half at the CNE - whatever- it is a dirt cheap product for a sports network.
Getting the tiniest more of TV coverage in the US is worth something too.

I tried getting into WNBA, a lot out of it is chucking mid rangers. Not much athleticism, and you really miss dunking. Not for me but I won't be opposed to the city getting a team.
