Full disclosure i know this is blasphemy to suggest a trade with la...
I know russ isn’t the type of guy we want here but i wonder about something along the lines of cj + one of nurk/cov for russ + a couple future unprotected firsts. La seems like they’re in a jam to deal russ away so it might be a chance to cut one year off cj’s deal while adding a couple picks. Frankly i’m not sure what we’d do with russ for the next season and a half but it’s not like we have cap space until cj is off the books anyways so cutting that final year off might have some merit if we can do so without paying more lux tax in the interim

DJJ has been really solid this year actually. I'd imagine there would be a third team that would give up at least a 2nd for him. Not sure it would help Portland's luxury tax situation though.
I don’t care about Portlands lux tax situation personally (same probably can’t be said about ownership), I just want that pick back. Such a boneheaded move by Olshey to give up a first in that deal.
The pick is lotto protected and turns into a second if not surrendered by 2028. Consider me not that worried. While it looks like a meh trade in hindsight it isn’t gonna look extremely bad given the downside risk has been mitigated with protections

Because of the picks LA traded in the Davis trade LA has only the 2027 pick available to trade and such a trade almost guarantees that Dame would ask out.

Any scenario where Nance ends up in Boston?

I like the idea of using Nance/Roco/Nurkic to acquire Precious + Bagley +expiring. I'd like to kick the tires on Bagley as a starting center and Precious at PF. That’s a big uptick in athleticism and length. If the bomb the pick get better, if they flourish we get 2 rebuilding pieces. IDK I get the hate for Bagley...buy it's Sacramento and he has Size/Speed/Athleticism to be a unique 5 if he pops.

If we hold on to Simons what would people be comfortable paying him in the off-season? He’s putting together some games that show he is always going to be able to score in this league.

We have some contracts coming off the books, i wouldn’t say this for any player but personally i’d match whatever he gets as a rfa. I think even if he ends up getting a 20 mil/ year kind of offer i’d match so long as he continues at a fairly high rate of production. Simons has had a good stretch and the verdict is out to see if he continues this level of play but if he’s anywhere close to this to close out the season there’s no way i’d let him walk in rfa for anything

I think Portland is flexible right now. If we could get a lotto protected first like we paid for him that’d be great.
Cov and Nurk are also highly available from my understanding

Bagleys attitude seems lacking. His talent is there but it’s much harder to fix an attitude problem

Right, figured a 1st - but what would be the salary coming back?
Have always loved Nurkic but he’s going into free agency and it seems like he hasn’t been defending well in Billups’ system?

I believe CJ, RoCo, and Nurk will all be elsewhere at the deadline.

About the only salary match i see that comes close is herangomez which is fine by me personally as his salary wouldn’t add any long term contracts to portland but then boston would need a couple mil more to bridge the gap, whichever expiring(s) you want to insert. That first would bridge the value gap and mitigate portland’s cost of acquiring nance

The Blazers also got out of a year of DJJ's contract, as he was getting DNP-CDs and, while young, was viewed as a bad contract at the time. I had no problem with the move per se. Nance was viewed as a "win now" piece, a "good guy", a "hustle player", etc. Cleveland fans were sad to see him go.
The real problem was trading three 1st round picks near sequentially for Covington and Nance. The roster had significant problems beyond a "DJJ+1st for Nance" trade. Three 1sts out while refusing to trade for a Butler, Harden, Simmons, etc. level player robbed the team of high-end talent. While losing three 1sts means three less rookie contract prospects to offset Dame and CJ taking up so much of the salary cap.

Agreed about 3 1sts for Nance and RoCo. Just a tremendous waste of assets. That said, portland didn’t get out of any salary with moving DJJ. He was expiring, the Blazers actually took on salary in the deal since Nance makes more and has one more year on his deal after this season.
But that’s splitting hairs, couldn’t agree more with your larger point of Olshey flushing first rounders down the toilet for rotational guy’s vs packaging up a ton of picks to try and get a real player.

Re: TRADE DEADLINE FEB 10TH.
Apparently the Sixers may be considering moving off their demand for a star in return for Ben Simmons, but are now trying to get a team to take Tobias Harris with Simmons... that's a pretty hefty price-tag from a salary POV.
Don't even think Portland has the salaries to really make that work even if they wanted to. The only way they could come up with that much salary is either moving both Dame and CJ or moving CJ + RoCo, Nurk and Nance Jr... so really gutting the team (but two of those 4 are expiring, so may not be around long).

Simmon+Harris
That's all in on Dame. Nurk would go to a 3rd team.

Yeah, did that combo, but then who is the Blazers center?
Any deal where the Sixers are trading both of those guys needs to have more than 2 teams I would think. Just too much salary for one team to absorb.
It got me thinking though, another reason why a Dame for Simmons deal would probably be a disaster... the fan base. A lot of fans will be bummed about moving Dame if/when it happens. Whoever they get in return will always have that shadow and expectation hanging over them. I think it would be hard for a majority of non-hardcore Blazer fans to truly embrace whoever comes back in a Dame deal like the fans have embraced Dame. Knowing how tissue-thin Simmons' ego/skin is, I would wonder if he could get past fans not fully embracing him or if they start criticizing him if he doesn't show up (on-the-court talent-wise) like expected...

Simmons. I would try to add someone like Muscala as a floor space for our 2022 SRP.
G - Damian Lillard (34) / Anfernee Simons (14)
G - Norm Powell (34) / Anfernee Simons (14)
F - Nassir Little (28) / Ben McLemore (20)
F - Tobias Harris (32) / Ben Simmons (16)
C - Ben Simmons (18) / Cody Zeller (15) / Mike Muscala (15)

Doubt philly does this. Doesn’t seem like they value cj too highly otherwise we’d have a deal by now
Return to Portland Trail Blazers
