When he plays, it's still Kevin Durant.

Jokic has developed into a good defender. I would not say elite but very good. Various advanced metrics estimate his defensive impact to be greater than Giannis.

I don't care about the regular season so I'll say KD

Re: Who is the best player in current NBA?
To me this discussion is between Jokic and Giannis. Looking at the last couple regular seasons and play-offs I don't see anyone else who has been so consistently elite as these two guys. Embiid is at the same level but a bit less accomplished and more injury prone. I also get the people saying KD or Curry because of a longer track record but Curry's last post-season appearance was against the Raptors in 2019, while KD missed 2020 and half of 2021. KD looked good in the post-season last year but good enough to overcome the consistent dominance of Giannis and Jokic? I wouldn't say so. Kawhi is kind of similar in that he doesn't play often enough to be considered but when he does show up in the play-offs he's one of the top guys in the league, maybe even the best. Weird to not even mention LeBron so I'll throw him in too but with so many strong candidates and LeBron being 37, he looks like he's at the end of his run as undisputed best player in the league.
Picking between Giannis and Jokic is hard but for now I'd have to go with Giannis since he's been 'best player in the league level' for longer than Jokic and is also coming off a dominant post-season run with a ring as result.

Curry.
Should be extremely obvious. There were many who doubted that the Warriors would even be a factor this season. Instead they look to be just as much a factor as ever. Where did those doubters all go? They should be about now admitting how wrong they were and how they realize they do not possess the tools to accurately assess Curry's impact. Methinks though they've instead decided to double down yet again and support some of the other candidates.
Giannis had a nice breakout season last year. Curry's 2015 was still better.
Jokic looks like he may be having a historic season. Curry last year was getting compared to his form in his historic 2016 season.
Curry is currently leading his team to one of the two best records in the league at around a 60-win pace (which is kind of usual for him when he's played with a semi-decent team the last 7 years).
Long term track record? Check. Recent form? Check. Recent winning? Check. In comparison Giannis with a third MVP and Jokic with a second are going to look incongruous with what they have achieved so far.

THIS season, as of this moment, it's Joel Embiid or Nikola Jokic.

I think that series loss might have had something to do with the fact that Phoenix had the next 4 best players in the series after Jokic.
Paul, Booker, Aayton and Bridges are easily better than the 2nd best Nugget at the time: Will Barton, I guess. You can still be the best player in the league and lose a series if you have absolute dreck for teammates.

Those are my top five. But I got Giannis and KD at the top of the heap. Giannis at this point is the TOTAL PACKAGE of scoring, rebounding, defense, passing, and freak athletic ability at the PF spot. In all of NBA history, not many guys DOMINATED their position like this in all those areas. MJ and peak Bron come to mind. Giannis isn't the most skilled scorer as well know. BUT he's still a great scorer (numbers wise) and alpha af! Plus he's a positionless type of player at 7 foot two way wise. Took what KG was doing to the next level. He could be the GOAT PF one day. And I don't think he needs as many rings as Timmy to pass him by. BECAUSE peak-prime wise, Giannis is looking like he will be the BEST PF of all time!
KD is such a skilled scorer. And his all around ability is very good. BUT when a Giannis or Bron type hit their peak, their physical dominance, scoring ability, defense, passing, and positional versatility as a package is hard to pass up. And Giannis won a chip WITHOUT another perennial All-Star, All NBA, or top 20 player in the league type on his team. BUT KD is so great that of course he can be argued as the best player in the league. Joker is the most skilled center ever offensively. Curry the GOAT shooter and GOAT player EVER 6'3 and under. And what Bron is doing at his age is phenomenal! He's certainly past his peak. But going by his production, he's still in his backend prime mode.

Re: Who is the best player in current NBA?
Assuming everyone is healthy...
KD
Giannis
Embiid
Jokic
LBJ/Steph
If Kawhi was healthy I'm not sure where I'd place him. He was still doing pretty damn well the last Playoffs (minus the Game 7 stinker) but haven't seen him hit the lights out level he was playing at during his one year as a Raptor. He gets back to that level (bit skeptical he will) then I'd be very torn of where he is on that list but right now he obviously doesn't deserve any real consideration right now.
But come Playoffs out of everyone on that list, give me KD. He just relishes the moment and burying teams.

Clearly Giannis without hesitation. Jokic and Durant don't come close to Giannis level impact on the defensive end.

I don’t know how anyone can pick Giannis over KD. KD almost eliminated a fully healthy Bucks team by himself last year. Giannis also fully admitted that KD is better then him after that series
It’s pretty clear that KD is the unstoppable NBA player alive when healthy

Giannis was just humble. He is clearly the more impactful player.
