I thought the poster meant that in response to Celtics fans finally seeing the truth and saying, are they finally seeing the truth or is it just now going to be them being biased to the guy on their team.

He was just making a light-hearted joke lol

I know the first post was a joke, I was referring to the response, but his joke can actually be a reality for a lot of people as Johnny Ball said. That's why people are fans.

The prior five years it was smart, but close. Last year smart fell off hard. He wasn't even best guard defender on Celtics and it honestly wasn't close. Was it an injury? Hate for new coach. New coaches scheme on defense? I don't know. I picked smart but last year it was jrue by a big amount

Very easy tradeoff if money isnt a factor.

I read a lot of fans saying Jrue is a bad shooter in the playoffs.

Did very little research.
Jrue has 50.2TS%, actually shot below 50% the last 3 years as compared to 53.2TS%, shot above 52TS% the last 4 years for Smart.

Jrue, by far. Smart is annoying though, I’ll give him that.

I appreciate the honesty. I have been debating with Celtics fans for years that Jrue is the better defender, now they will finally see the truth.

TBf Smart struggled relative to his peak last year. It was really striking watching all the career highlights once he got moved - he used to embarrass guys. Ripping the ball loose when guys tried to walk the dog, overwhelming guys, just making them look bad. He's still very intelligent as a defender and makes great plays, but he's better on bigger guys at this point. Which I think is best of both worlds as I think he will do better playing up a spot sort of point forward in Memphis.

Smart defense did not fell off ...The new coach want it more offense and they went away from their defense.

I think Jrue is better with fundamental defense, bread and butter.

Smart is better with theatrical defense.

Celtics winning it all man they’re stacked.

Smart is one of the most misunderstood players in the league. I cringed every time the ball touched his hands on offense.

One of Smart's famous plays is boxing out Porzingis for a rebound. Then years later he was traded for Porzingis.

He also had the assignment to cover Embiid at times last postseason.

Jrue has other defensive advantages over Smart, but no way is he more switchable.

Indeed, my basic take is that Jrue is better at on-ball defense of guards, and Smart is better at defense otherwise. But they're both elite in any case.

Jrue is a better man defender, and a
Smart better overall because he's scrappier, willing to sacrifice his body more and us definitely willing to do dirty tactics over the course of a game.

We're arguing over who is the best defensive PG in the NBA. It is literally splitting hairs to me. I like both on defense a lot. I place a lot of value in two way players.

Smart being the first guard to win DPOY in years was such a laughable choice

Stevens knows what he’s doing

Marcus has been on one team, and he has the overblown flopping reputation from a few over the top ridiculous flops a few years back.
It's a shame because so many NBA fans that don't see the Celtics night in and night out can't get that flopper label out of their heads. Which is understandable.

Jrue and Smart are two incredibly good defenders with different strengths while sharing plenty of strengths. But after watching Marcus Smart since his rookie year there is just literally no one I've ever seen like Marcus on the defensive end, as a guard- and a guard who arguably has average NBA athleticism in most aspects- who can single handedly take over a game defensively like Kawahi Leonard or Anthony Davis.
Hopefully going to Memphis gives him even more exposure before he reaches any significant decline physically.
One day Marcus Smart will be defensive player of the year, mark my words.

I don't know, Smart wasn't quite at his best last year as Boston focused more on offense. We'll see if he bounces back. He's younger than Jrue.

Great post! I was trying to really remember where I stood on Smart as frankly...I don't really enjoy the current celtics that much and don't watch them. My first thoughts were that Jrue had quicker feet to stop a first step, but could be bodied some if left in iso. With the opposite for Smart. Off ball was where I was drawing a blank. Jrue is always seemingly where he should be but lacked size. But with Smart I couldn't tell if I was remembering just a few highlights where he came off ball or if he was consistent.

I have always had them on the same level defensively.

Jrue is better at guarding quick / small guards. Smart is better at guarding bigger players. Smart is a lot stronger than Jrue, but Jrue is quicker.

The DPOY year version of Smart (not that I agreed with him winning), was an off-ball monster who could drop into the paint and be the most annoying obstacle stopping guys getting into their jump on drives. I think my favorite part of his defense was his uncanny ability to rush into the paint and stop things from happening. Whether is was switching onto a big, or drawing a charge, or simpy beating guys to spots and being immovable, him sprinting into the paint to be annoying is what I would picture. Boston played a way less aggressive scheme last year though, and Smart was deployed a little more generically as a switchy point of attack defender. He really good at switching but not the quickest point of attack defender. He still found ways to be an elite turnover forcer, mostly in help situations. Smart looks stubby because he's so thick, but he has a 6'9.5" wingspan so he's kind of a legit small wing.

Jrue has always been such a point of attack specialist, it's hard to compare. He's basically always been his teams' go-to-guy for guarding the toughest perimeter matchup (with the exception of the PJ Tucker year in Milwaukee), whether that's guarding Dame or Durant or Jimmy. He's got good timing on traps, digs, and help at the nail. He's also got a decent 2-footed jump which makes him strong on contests and a wee little bit of rim protection. While both players are all about horizontal defense, Jrue gets off the ground much more easily than Smart.

I think the "whose better" thing is truly about team context here. If I have a monster defensive back line, I probably prize Jrue's POA skills. If I'm a funkier defensive team that needs scheme versatility and the abilitiy to bring extra help, I think Smart is much more valuable than Jrue.

Both are going to be in fantastic defensive situations next year btw!

Both are elite but Smart did drop off last season having trouble staying in front of the quicker guys. Jimmy owned Jrue but that is a just a bad matchup and Jimmy was is in God mode. White on a switch is a lot more effective on Butler because of his quickness, length, and ability to defend the rim without fouling.
