The fact that it was advertised as a pay cut or that Brunson was doing such a charitable thing is the problem.
The Knicks literally offered him a max contract and he took it. Jalen Brunson didn't do us any favors. It was either take a max now or risk waiting for a year with no guaranteed deal for maybe more later, but that was never a guarantee. Especially with the risks of injuries or teams just thinking that they wouldn't pay so much to a 6'2 point guard.
It was the smart thing to take $156 Million now to be the star player in the #1 market in the USA as of now. It wasn't a deal, or discount or anything shady that people are trying to make it out to be
