I would not invest very much in a back up. My question is he maybe starter material?

I think he has starter ability in a 2-way guard/glue guy in a role similar to how we've used Ball and Ayo. We really need only 1 of those 3, so if we can trade Ball and/or Ayo for an upgrade elsewhere, I'd be happy to keep Jones, but if we can't, it would seem the $ would be spent better elsewhere.

He isn’t a starter for us though.

Vuc needs to be off this roster. He does not fit the new style of play. No offense should running through him.

To me these could be starter numbers
If this trend is for real what hinders him to become a starter?

after having a great college career it took his brother Tyus some years to become who he is now in the nba. Maybe Tre is a late bloomer as well?

I think we all see a decent player, but he's limited. I just wouldn't want to give him more than a year's deal, and he'll want 3 years (I assume).
We should be targeting 2026 with Smith/White/Giddey/Matas/PWill (by default, I think) and maybe Collins/Ayo/Ball
Keep cap space relatively clean, add a top pick in 2026 and go from there

I guess it works if you want waste Giddey’s size make him the SF. I personally don’t think Tre Jones will ever be good enough to warrant giving up that mismatch.

He’s definitely not taking a one year deal. He’ll likely get 3 a year deal around $10 million per from a contender to be the backup. I like him, but we can only keep him if we planning to get of someone else this offseason or early next season. Carter being able to opt in will likely cost us Jones. Which is shame because he’s a great backup for Giddey especially knowing Ball will be out semi-regularly.
Who knows though we might be keep him and sort out the guards later.

Well I think most everyone would agree with that if the right offer comes along. I wouldn't be shocked if the only offers for him amount to worse player(s) on longer deals.

If those players are on deals that expire after next season I wouldn’t care. I know our front office won’t see it that way though. I think Vuc wants out of here and badly and we should make it happen as long as we don’t take we don’t hurt our cap situation. Addition by subtraction. Trade him for an overpaid 4/5 that expires next season, but one that we don’t feel obligated to play.

Yeah I also don't really care who it is if they expire after next season, but I just wouldn't count on that being the case. There is also the plausibility that whoever comes back hurts our tank next year. I don't particularly care, just noting it.
Unless we trade Vuc and somebody else for a larger contract, we're probably not keeping Tre Jones unless maybe if we stash or trade or second round pick.

AK and Billy likes their guards and big wings. I expect they'll retain Jones. Carter will be getting waived.

Re: Tre Jones discussion thread
What’s the point of giving Tre Jones heavy minutes and contributing to more wins if they have no intention of keeping him beyond this season? Another Kilpatrick if that’s the case.
His brother Tyus has had a more productive career over a longer period of time and signed for the minimum, I don’t think the market for Tre will be that hot.
Keep him on a team-friendly 1+1 deal, you can even slightly overpay above market value because it’s a short term deal. Then you have the flexibility to deal our other guards on the roster or even Tre down the line.

I think AK wanted to see what he traded for, so he understood fit with the future Bulls was (or not).
Also, AK wants to win games this season.

They want to win games and make the play-in. Tre helps them do that.

Re: Tre Jones discussion thread
I seriously doubt we're signing Tre to another contract, because we're over cap even without a full roster. Assuming Giddey signs for $25M, we're at about $160M for 13 players and we still have to sign Coby & Ayo the summer after.
Vuc + Collins + Pat + Huerter combined are already $75M. If you sign Tre to $12M, we're at $172M which is already more than this year's team when we had Zach Lavine. If the Bulls are OK with $172M, I think they would have just kept Lavine.

Re: Tre Jones discussion thread
I think Tre is probably back. KC mentioned right away that they were interested in probably getting him back.
They will lose THT, Vuc and Carter somehow and add 2 rookies
1 Giddey-Jones
2 Ball-Ayo-Terry
3 White-Huerter-Phillips
4 Buz-Williams
5 Collins-Smith

Spurs fan here. Tre was great last year, it was night and day when he was playing as a PG vs Sochan (Pop's demented experiment) and overall he has always performed at or beyond expectations. Unfortunately for him Spurs needed to go for upside and drafted Castle, then signed CP3 and finally were unexpectedly gifted Fox, so give he was expiring that meant he was all but gone. But he's a really solid player and character guy, I hope he finds a home in Chicago but if CP3 doesn't re-sign and the Spurs don't draft a guard, I would be open to bringing him back. Rooting for him in any case. Don't want Zach Collins back, though
