Can some ELI5? Is the $80m just because of the extra year or is there more money per year? If its the former, I don't get it. He is risking a guarantee of 3 more years by not signing now for an extra guaranteed year at the back end?

So he could sign a 3 year, $212 million extension now or get $80 million more next year, but for 3 years?

That would mean almost $100 million a year for 3 years?

Obviously would want more money.

But once he signs that extension, Nuggets aren't going to be able to make big changes to the roster like this season. They'd have to trade players like Gordon, Murray or now Cam Johnson, presumably he'll get an extension over $30 million at some point.

So this upcoming season may be their window. If they don't win it next June, hard to see them having much payroll flexibility once Jokic signs that extension.

I think Luka and Jokic are not a great fit. But they have so much talent it probably wouldn't matter. Last year Doncic was still around the 5th best player in the league despite being horrifically out of shape and taking many possessions off. He should be a perennial MVP candidate and threatening Jokic and Shai as the top player in the league.

Also the LA whistle would be a huge X factor. They wouldn't allow Caruso to mug Jokic ever play if he was in LA. That was easily the difference in the series.

Jokic would be a perfect fit on OKC or San Antonio. To a lesser degree Boston.

I agree that Luka and Jokic stylistically don't fit perfectly but I have a feeling that they would adapt to each as the season goes on and that tandem should win a minimum of 2 chips.

Honestly, I think you should do some research.
The Denver front office ENGAGED this conversation themselves with Jokic and his reps. Jokic could sign an extension now, or wait until next summer and be eligible for another 80 million on top of what he can get right now.

Everyone in Denver knew he would likely wait, and so did Kroenke. It doesn't mean anything.

I understand that he is turning down this off season so he can sign for $80 million more next summer, I read the article and the front office quote about them expecting that he would turn it down. That is not what I am talking about. This upcoming season you guys are going to hear a ton of analysis, fans, or adversaries stress you out about Jokic leaving even if that’s not the case. I understand the stress that causes as a fan. My comment was to the fans—even if that’s not you—I am sorry for all the stress that others are going to cause them.
