Not really sure about the back story of the thread title. Probably banned during that time.

Was supposed to say you do it with your mouth and not your eyes, but as I am typing this, I can see the emoticon used has the O face.

i won a small cash award from that conference too (1st place undergrad student paper comp) http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/ar ... 901400058X

i taught myself image analysis and wrote a script that took input images from multi-photon microscopy (in this case we used images of collagen and elastin fibers from human aortas) and it basically was 100% automated. It took the image, created a skeleton of the structure, spit out tons of stats from orientations to fiber widths, concentration, intersections, tortuosity, etc (basically any descriptor you wanted I could get it). Not published was the script I wrote to convert those automatically into inputs for FEA programs to run structural analysis on them. Not sure where the research is at currently, but the code was used to determine structural difference between different aortic conditions (primarily aneurysmal vs non-anuersymal tissue in my time there). Idea was if you figure out what's changing you can figure out the histopathology of the diseased state. I got a myriad of co-author pubs out of it too.

The real novel part of it is a filtering step I did in the middle that allowed for the quantification of information from the noisey images that come with fluorsecent microscopy techniques. At that conference I ran into a few PhD students trying to do the same thing with no luck. That's when I realized I was onto something.

Where did you get the aortas from? Thats pretty cool research. I remember you mentioning that you had gotten first place.

coolest one for me was getting to go into the OR where a patient was getting a section of their aorta removed (had an aneurysm) and replaced with a dacron stent/scaffold/whatever the official name is. seeing that got me over my minor queasiness around blood haha. in general the local hospitals provided ample tissue samples post-mortem or surgery. some of the more unique pathologies we ordered from a somewhat local tissue bank (they also do organ placement)

And here I am thinking Ryan is a Lakers and Pirates fan, that is really good at Photoshop and making faces before duck faces and selfies became mainstream.

Dude, now I have an answer to that Swedish House Mafia song.
