I still do not get it. Something is not adding up. I understand salary cap and incomplete roster charge. I just do not get the cap holds for exceptions. I just do not see those elsewhere.

I mean, if you have cap holds for exceptions too, then how do you go over the cap except with trades and signing players with bird rights? Anyway, I will zip up and do my homework first.

I'm hoping during this Riley/LeBron meeting, Riley shows he has 1 or 2 more guys who would sign for vet min, if LeBron is coming back. He asks LeBron to commit to the team, and then more pieces will fall into place.

I doubt a guy would agree to pay cut to sign with Miami, if LeBron is gone. Lose themselves some coin, and on a team that isn't a contender.

I'm still confident in retaining everybody we want.

Basically by entering free agency near or already over the cap. So year 1, you have nobody on the books--all cap space, no exceptions. You sign 10 guys to multi-year deals that take up the entire cap, plus 5 vet min players, going slightly over the cap.

In year 2, all those multi-year deals include raises, and you get a draft pick. Say the cap goes up 3 million, but your aggregate salary committed to those 10 guys, because of raises, goes up 5 million. And you sign your first round pick. And you use your MLE and your LLE. Now you're an easy 10M over the cap. etc etc

Yep, and with the trade exception we might net a fifth new guy. McRoberts looks like a starter and I imagine at least one of the Ennis/Napier/Granger combo will end up in the rotation as well.
