Love CMB but this kid is exactly what we needed man. His offensive game would have been perfect beside Barnes and would have filled the backup C role for the short term too.

Didn't Masai scouted Queen 3x I think, but yeh hopefully CMB can make some noise at some point, he's been pretty quiet so far this season.

CMB will be a good player. But Derik Queen has multiple allstar selections ahead of him.

Derik Queen exemplifies what I hate about what NBA scouting has become since the 2000s — too much focus on physical characteristics and not enough emphasis on if someone can simply play. Watching the kid in college it was easy to see he could just play.

I honestly love CMB but it never made sense to me why we would use a top 10 pick in a loaded draft on a player that plays the same position as our best player, that also plays a pretty similar style.

With Masai stating multiple times he wanted a young big to develop, I thought for sure we're drafting one, Queen made so much sense when he could do everything Yak does offensively and obviously so much more. No he's not great defensively but he's nowhere near as bad as some make him out to be. His biggest issue on that end is consistency (because he does actually pressure the ball well at times and contest - just not often enough - so obv he needs to improve conditioning) which would be my 2nd part was I thought we'd help him develop his body, diet etc that I said before if I had to pick one kid to be a potential all-star outside of the top 6, it would be him.

And even if we didn't take him, obv there's Coward too. I understand that we have a ton of SGs but there is no all-star caliber one and he still has the size to play backup SF to supplement his minutes. It's not like his buzz was a secret as a potential steal. I'll admit he wasn't the top of my board (but still on it). But all of this is where our FO should not only have the intel, they're the ones who actually got to see BOTH Queen and Coward up close & personal, we worked both out multiple times. I still really like CMB that I won't call it a "mistake" because he will be a solid player but it feels like a "missed opportunity" to put it very kindly and it kinda sucks because the FO should've know this (should be) was their last top 10 pick for awhile, so why not go for upside and especially at one of the positions that could use one?!?! Anyways it is what it is...

Toronto was never going to draft Derik Queen. I have no clue why they brought him in for that late pre draft visit to Toronto where he didnt even play. Queen had some red flag plays defensively in transition last year. There were some major negative moments and for a player projected to struggle in transition and on defense theres no chance that fits Toronto's longterm vision.

Last year Derik Queen was my favorite player to watch in College Basketball. After I watched him play vs Purdue I was completely sold on his game and followed him for the rest of the year. I watched around 15 to 20 Maryland games last year. Every game he played he was the best player on the court and if it wasn't obvious at the beginning of the game it was obvious at the end and I just got a feeling in the back of my head this is going sto stay the same at the NBA level, its just a matter of time. He just finds a way to get the better of each play. Queen just understands the game at a higher level than everyone else. He can see things other players cant. It becomes very obvious the more you watch him play.

He's gonna always have his flaws similar to Jokic or Doncic but it just doesn't matter because he makes the big plays when he has to on both ends of the floor.

I agree. There was 0 chance Masai/Bobby was going to pick him. He’s exactly the opposite of what the FO thinks a Raptors player should be.

For better or sadly over the recent years, for worse. It is what it is. Hoping the best for DQ as a player. I still love CMB, he might not make all star games like DQ probably will but I think there’s a lot more to CMB than what we’ve seen so far.

This is exactly what I saw from Derik Queen as well. He’s just a savant at seeing the game. It’s the quality that makes star players and superstars if the skill level can catch up with the processing. Anyway, I’m sad we didn’t draft him. He would have been an insane complement to Barnes. Imagine having two front court guys who could read the game as well as they both do — Barnes’ defence with Queen’s touch around the bucket. Both of them can play-make at an elite level. Just had to put some shooters and defenders around them. Could have been special stuff.

Day to Davis and Ingram on the same team. I don’t see this possibly going wrong with injuries at all….

I don't think that's likely the reason for bigs (and maybe small guards going forward after the Trae/Morant experience) like Queen going lower. If you can't defend and the only functional playoff role for you is C in the playoffs, the league is going to be unforgiving for you.

There is one Jokic, who is both huge and passable - and singularly unique in talent - and then there's a bunch of other guys who get exposed. Sabonis, Sengun and KAT last year. If you need another elite defensive C on the floor to hide you, it becomes harder to rationalize your usage/impact.
