I'm hoping there is a sequel soon so I can catch up with how the US has progressed over the last few years. With the reckless spending demonstrated by some of the characters in the first movie I assumed some kind of economic troubles would be in the future, but I'm probably way off.

First, you're comparing the foreign born populations of Sydney to that of the entire U.S. Second, you're assuming that's pertinent to this discussion, which it isn't.
Finally, and most amusingly, you completely miss the point, and think that White Men Can't Jump was EVER representational of ANYTHING. They could make a sequel, and it would still be a movie. It's not an all-telling cultural expose.
Maybe I should draw some broad conclusions about Australian culture based on Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome?
