Taking Markannen 9th if he falls that far would be an option I could live with as well if we can trade for a decent PG.

If you want to bring up the injuries, then that's understandable; but, this guy is better than any guard on this team and by a wide margin. He would immediately be a top 2 player on this team if he came here.

Bledsoe is a good player, when he is on the court. But he has played over 70 games 3 times in his 7 years in the league. I wouldn't trade a high pick for him for the same reason I was happy they didn't resign Parsons after last season.

My concerns with Bledsoe are both his injuries and his age. He will turn 28 this year and is not quite in the same age group as our younger guys. In two years, when hopefully Barnes and Noel are at their best, he is likely to be slowing down even if he stays healthy. I don't think he will age very well because he is dependent on his athleticism and lacks a good outside shot.

Yea age and injury history are my concerns with Bledsoe. When healthy he's great but how often is that? Like Wes I think he needs to go to a team ready to compete for a title now, not to a rebuilding team.

If the PG they want is gone by 9 then take the best player available. Worst case scenario that player they draft would become a trade asset like Justin Anderson was.

Exactly. And he is not a floor general. He is a scorer who 100% relies on his ability to attack with his athleticism and quickness. I like the guy and would take him for a low risk price, but I don't see the obsession with him. He gets Dallas back into the playoffs if everyone is healthy (7th/8th seed), but he isn't a long-term solution. I wouldn't say no to Bledsoe for the right deal (I've said this before but the value being a 2018 1st, lottery protected) but not more.

It feels like we could be choosing between Ntilikina and Markkanen, though the constant whispers are that Phil Jackson really likes him for the New York Knicks pick at 6th/7th. Those are my least favorite in the top 10 but it seems like it's likely to happen.

Yes, I was very surprised with how much the Knicks seem to like Ntilikina.

http://www.espn.com/nba/insider/story/_/id/19138112/chad-ford-nba-draft-2017-big-board-51-ranking-markelle-fultz-lonzo-ball-more
I spoke with a number of NBA GMs and scouts to compile this updated ranking of the 30 best players.

7. Malik Monk
Previous rank: No. 6
Kentucky
Freshman
Guard

Monk was often streaky, but when hitting shots he was unstoppable.

For a league that worships the 3 and has gotten away from traditional point guards and 2-guards, he would be a great fit on a team looking to space the floor.

8. Dennis Smith
Previous rank: No. 4
NC State
Freshman
Guard

Smith's draft stock has slipped a little bit lately as teams questioned his effort and attitude when the Wolfpack's season slipped into the abyss.

There's no question he has elite athleticism and finishing ability at the rim. And he can shoot the 3 and pass the ball. I expect he might climb a bit in workouts once the memory of the college season fades.

9. Lauri Markkanen
Previous rank: No. 7
Arizona
Freshman
Forward

Markkanen is a prototypical 4 in the NBA because of his elite shooting ability from 3-point territory. He also has great size and a great frame for a fluid athlete.

Still, scouts worry a bit about toughness and his pedestrian work on the boards.

10. Frank Ntilikina
Previous rank: No. 11
France
Age: 18
Guard

Ntilikina is averaging nearly 6.0 PPG and 1.5 APG for Strasbourg in France this year.

Those numbers might not wow you, but a number of scouts think his feel, competitiveness and versatile skill set should put him in the mix with Fox and Smith.

11. Zach Collins
Previous rank: No. 14
Gonzaga
Freshman
Center

Collins quietly put together one of the best freshman seasons in college basketball. That he did it coming off the bench at Gonzaga kept him under the radar for a while, but by mid-February, scouts began to fall in love with him as a potential lottery pick.

His strong play in the NCAA tournament didn't raise his draft stock a lot -- he was ranked No. 13 before the tournament and No. 12 after it on our Big Board -- but it did solidify his placement.

It would be incredibly sad if we had managed to play ourselves out of the opportunity to draft even 'just' Ntilikina. If there's one area where this roster desperately needs young lottery talent then it's our backcourt and he'd be a great fit with his versatility. I like Markkanen, but with Noel/Barnes/Dirk/Mejri in place at PF/C those are rellay not the positions where you'd want to add a young talent like the finnish sniper. Should be very hard for him to get on the court with all those guys ahead in the depth chart.

So let's say the Mavs are not able to draft one of the PG's. Would any of you be opposed to targeting Jeff Teague in FA? I'd do it in a heartbeat. Also this may sound funny but I'd also try to swing a trade for Tyson Chandler to backup Noel.

That depends on if you are OK letting Seth go. Adding Teague and Tyson pretty much eats up every bit of space we have to use on Curry next summer.

Serh should go regardless instead of us overpaying him, if we can attach powell and get something decent back that'd be awesome

I have a growing interest in Caleb Swanigan. He is on the short side, but he has the wingspan to make up for it. He is a beast on the boards and his shooting would fit well next to Noel.

I would love it if the Mavs could pull off a trade with Por for one of their picks to take this guy.

With Carlisle's comments that they like the top 15 players, I'm not expecting the unexpected like a trade or draft of someone completely off everyone's radar. Of the top 10, the players I'm worried about the most on the court are Markkanen and Monk. I'm warming up to Markkanen, but I'm worried about his defense and rebounding. I see the Mavs trying to turn Monk into a PG, and if that doesn't work, he's another undersized SG on this team. If we already had a big PG and no Curry, I'd love to take him. That said, I don't think there's a bad pick of the top 10 guys.

I would hate to see Seth go because I like his game and the swagger he brings to the team however Teague is a better player and more of a true PG. Tyson is also a fan favorite and would be a quality back up for Noel. We all also know that he's a perfect fit for Carlisle's system. Having him also allows him and Noel to keep their minutes down to about 20-25 a game. Tyson isn't a FA though is he? I was thinking he would have to come in a trade (for Powell maybe?).

If the team can draft Markkanen and add Teague and Tyson I would feel really good about the team going into the season. It would give them a really balanced roster that can defend the paint, rebound, shoot and they'd have a distributor.

Mavericks 2017 Draft

Post#516 » by Mr B » Sun Apr 16, 2017 4:26 pm

Here is another option if a PG they want isn't available when their pick comes up. Would you guys be willing to offer up a trade (that includes the pick) for Porzingis? Apparently he's really unhappy with the state of the Knicks (because they have no direction).

Trade for Porzingis and they go sign Jeff Teague.

Id would 100% trade our pick for Porzingis in a heartbeat. I'd add Barnes, Curry and take on bad salary if that's what it takes.Nothing and no one would be untouchable in my opinion.

Powell/Curry/Our #1 for Tyson/Phoenix #1?

#2, so not realistic at all. This isn't going to be an easy draft to move up in.

Return to Dallas Mavericks
