I think it is a matter of expectations. I don't think anyone was expecting Dwight Howard. However I think some people were hoping he would be the next Ibaka. I think Gortat(who did nothing his first year as a 23 year old) is the a more reasonable projection.
I could see Seraphin being with the Wizards until they need to move him in a consolidation move(or to address a need at another position).

Pre-draft, the Wizards worked - out:

*Samardo Samuels (6"9 260), undrafted and signed by Cleveland.
http://espn.go.com/nba/player/stats/_/i ... do-samuels

*Derrick Caracter (6' 9", 275 lbs) drafted 58th.
http://espn.go.com/nba/player/stats/_/i ... k-caracter

For the minutes KS is able to play and the time it will likely take for him to be as productive as Samuels is currently (Caracter is buried on the bench), I see absolutely zero basis for taking him @ 17 over these guys ^. A dedicated Big Man coach is warranted for KS and hopefully a big we take in the draft.

I think that's pretty stupid reasoning. Who cares about what Samuels is doing in the worst team in the league with little direction and less hope? Seraphin was obviously drafted b/c brass projects him to fit in long term with our team's identity. The guy is here to play defense and be an offensive role player at best. No one here can give a credible assessment of his defensive abilities against those of Caracter, Samuels, Perkins as a rookie, etc, unless they've watched hours and hours of tape or they have access to proprietary defensive metrics.

We just have to be patient with Kevin. He has upside.

I think the upside comparison for him ought to be Nene.
That would obviously be what we would most hope for
but I don't think it's completely out of the question
given his youth and experience.

Considering how much junk in the trunk he's got,
he's quite light on his feet. That could, when/if he
learns how to play, be a very useful combination.
But the main thing is, he could/might be the physical
force we've long craved for and complained of the lack of.

Am I the only one here that thinks Seraphin looks fatter than he did in the beginning of the year?

I say the opposite; I have his debuts on my hard drive, though I haven't checked them out recently, but in particular I'm remembering some practice footage from over the summer where he was really heavy and slow in the open court; a real slug while working back from the knee thing.

I'm thinking he's possibly somewhere in the 260 range as of now and can matchup with a good number of power forwards from a foot-speed perspective.

I wasn't basing it on his foot speed or movement, which could just be better because his injury is healed. I just think he looks fatter.

A light-hearted piece by Mike Lee on Kevin. Key factoid? McGee sold Kevin his Segway when he moved to more-spacious digs in VA. Kevin is still a city slicker.

The second half of the article gave me some hope, his English seems to have improved and it would be great if he played for the French national team, especially during the lockout.

Kevin didn't make the French team, but Eurobasket 2011 may be the best hoops happening for a while. All of the top Euros will be playing, many NBA players as-well.

That's a shame. It wouldn't hurt for him to play against real comp this summer.

KS interview on the Wiz site. I'll be interested to see how Kev is looking these days. Flip is his big man coach apparently :-?

WashingtonWizards.com: What have you been doing since the season ended?

Kevin Seraphin: I’ve been working out and I’ve really been trying to cut down on my body fat.

WW.com: Have you been here in the U.S. or did you go back to France?

KS: I was in France for a month and a half, but now I am back here in DC for 2 weeks before I go back to France.

WW.com: Have you been working with the coaches since you have been back?

KS: Yes, with Flip.

WW.com: What have you been working on with Flip since you have been back?

KS: He has me working on my offensive game and trying to improve my shot. I’m really trying to improve on everything.

WW.com: What are your goals for the rest of the off-season?

KS: I’m just trying to keep my body fat down and trying to stay in good shape.

WW.com: How has the Segway been working out?

KS: (Laughs) I still have it, I normally use my car, but I still use it sometimes.

WW.com: How was your time back in France?

KS: I had a good time with my family. I had a good time with my friends. It was really nice to spend a lot of time with them.

WW.com: Was last season the first time you had been away from them for so long?

KS: They came to see me play a lot, but yes that was the first time I was away from them for a long time, so it was nice to be back in France.

Boy, there's nothing encouraging to infer from that exchange.

"What have you been up to this summer?"

"Been home, getting fat, working on my game a little."

"Oh?"

"Yeah, I'm putting in face time with the boss for a couple weeks, and then it's back to baguettes and wine."

Glad you said it :) , what you wrote is exactly what I was thinking. I know how the French are (Married to someone from France), they very much enjoy their holidays and they are very leisurely....no Goodman Leagues in France as-far as I know. This guy needs to be playing ball all the time.

Seriously, offseason interviews are a great opportunity for ANY player to encourage the fans and make it seem like they're progressing a lot, or at the very least, working hard. Maybe I'll chalk this one up to a language barrier issue (weak excuse) or Seraphin just not having the wherewithal to make himself look good to the public.

In summary:

Seraphin is working on improving everything (vague).

Seraphin's main goals for this offseason are "trying to keep his body fat down and trying to stay in shape".

*******************

If those are his goals, someone needs to sit him down and teach him the art of goal setting. Either that, or he is destined to be the next Eddy Curry (without nearly as much hype). At least in that scenario we'd avoid giving him a huge contract for no good reason a la Curry.

At least say you're trying to add muscle or work on your conditioning.

Sometimes I don't get project players. It's like they're labeled as project players, and then they don't understand the urgency with which they need to start training and practicing. It's not like the other NBA players, that is, the established ones and non-project players, aren't practicing and training all offseason as well! These project players have ground to make up! They have to catch up to the other NBA players! Start working harder! And please don't wait until you've been in the league for 5 years until you realize you have to work really hard to make it in the NBA, and justify it all by giving yourself a nickname about how many days a week you bring it. (hint to Andray: every NBA player brings it 7 days a week, welcome to the club)

I really think he is gonna show a lot more this year. Just look at his DX picture and compare it to him this last Winter. He really put on some weight. Combine that with a lack of sufficient strength/explosion in the knee, and a new culture/language and its easy to see why he was not overly impressive.
