Sometimes I think I can handle a girlfriend, but most times I like my space. Dunno what to do.

Watching Inside 9/11 with the family. Still makes me sick as hell and angry. Prayers for all the families who were affected by the terrorist attack.

here is a story I don't usually tell:
August 2001, I was stationed on board the war ship USS Lake Champlain CG57.
we were at sea the entire month and then some doing training exercises and drills to get us ready for our up coming six month deployment the following January in the Middle East.

September 7 2001, the ship finally returns to home port San Diego after 5 1/2 weeks away from our families. over the next 3 days the crew went into a relaxed mode. we took our laundry home, we did not resupply the ship, we were order to relax. Our schedule did not have us getting underway until late October for a week then back again and stay home for the holidays before deployment.

September 11 2001, withing minutes of the collapse of the towers our Captain talked to the crew over the 1MC system (the ships PA) and told us that nobody was allowed to leave the ship. Not even to take trash out. He told us that nobody could enter or leave the pier, and that the base was closed. He told us to call our families and let them know that we did not know when we would be allowed to come home that it could be days, weeks or even months. the last thing he said was "make preparations for getting underway, the ship will get underway as soon as it's ready".

Although the crew was in shock we all came together and got the ship ready in 3 hours. (an evolution that usually takes days to accomplish). By noon we were underway and out of the San Diego bay. Once at sea the captain told us that he had gotten orders directly from NORAD to head to Los Angeles and patrol the LAX area just off the shore of Dockweiler beach and that the FCC had grounded all air traffic in the country. In what seem like a scene from the movie Crimson Tide Captain Guillory said "we have a direct line with NORAD and the President and our orders are to shoot down anything in the air no questions asked. Although we have a limited amount of missiles on board at the moment I am ready to use them. I realize that we maybe using them over American soil and perhaps on Americans, but this is what we train for and I expect you to do your duty. Combat Systems and Weapons departments man your stations. This is Captain Guillory-out".

September 12, the crew started to realize that we didn't have any food or clothes on board. The ships store was bare by the end of business hours. the only thing that was left was a few packs of underwear size XXX. most of the crew only had the clothes we wore the day before and the reality of the entire situation started to stress everyone.

September 17, a supply ship finally showed up. yeah clean underwear!!!!

October 2nd, the ship finally returns to home port San Diego, but not before we hear the news that we only have less than 2 weeks before we start our six month deployment and that it has just turned into a 9 month deployment (not counting the previews Aug and Sept).

October 15th, underway. official start of deployment.

May 2002, Middle of the Pacific ocean. the ship is on its way home. the crew was beyond tired, homesick, and jonsing for anything US. We pulled in Pearl Harbor for 24 hrs to replenish supplies. waiting for the ship at the pier were 2 pallets of Girl Scout Cookies that Bruce Willis had purchased for his daughters and they had donated them to the military. The perfect little piece of home that every one was so desperate for. :droop:

Bonus- that day was the Sunday that Robert Horry shat on the city of Sacramento with a great assist from Blade Divac and I got to see that at a bar in Waikiki beach.

Thanks for the story, Snaq. And thanks again for your efforts. I'm sure you were, but were you guys watching the news when the towers went down, or what? Did you guys prep the ship in 3 hours blindly? Or you knew it was because of the attacks?

it all happened at around 7 or 8 pacific time and we had just started our work day. most of the crew had no idea what was going on because they were working. I just happen to walk into the micro-miniture office to talk to a co-worker who was glued to the tv. I saw the towers fall and shortly after the Captain addressed the crew. after the Captain said we were getting underway and people started to ask why that's when most everybody found out what was going on.
