Ticks a lot of the right narrative boxes I think:
  • Scores a lot of points
  • Very efficient at scoring
  • Team is winning a lot of games - currently the most games
  • Team plays much better when he's in the game than when he's out
  • Has played in most of the team's games so far
  • Hasn't won MVP before (no voter vatigue) - most of the other contenders besides Luka have already won at least once, and some more than once
  • History of making all-NBA team and having deep playoff runs, so he's not coming out of nowhere as a fringe candidate

There are some things working against him. Luka, Giannis, and Curry all have larger raw counting stats right now. Curry, Luka, and Jokic beat him out on certain advanced metrics early in the season. Luka and Jokic in particular and to a lesser extent Giannis and Curry will get some credit for carrying their teams, while Tatum will get a bit of a ding because the team is so deep that they're good even when Tatum's off the court. Jokic and Curry have insane scoring efficiency. Guess maybe you could throw KD in there if the Nets actually get good as a guy who is carrying his team and has really insane scoring efficiency too. And of course, this REALLY hinges on the Celtics being a top seed, which isn't guaranteed to stay true through the end of the season.

I think I would have Tatum as the favorite right now, but not an odds-on favorite over the field.

Jayson Tatum also said he loves playing in Boston, basically signing a lifetime contract with the Cs.

2 years ago when Tatum was showing high level signs of becoming a great player, I mentioned that Tatum may in fact reach his Idol's level (Kobe) of a BB player. No one took that post serious. If you look at the same timeline of age, and Tatum' consistent improvements as well as his Higher level (my opinion) of defensive ability and versatility. I think it is at least feasible. Perhaps Kobe will be a better scoring Assassin than Tatum, but Tatum's overall game makes me believe it is now possible at the very least.

a Title or 2 will help the cause of course

Go Tatum!!

It was a different league, but also, Steph entered the league at 21 and he only played in 26 games during the '11-12 season.

Yeah Steph spent a lot of time out with ankle injuries early in his career.

years ago we had a poll about Tatum's ceiling. Kobe was one of the options. I'll never like that comparison for a variety of reasons, but I wish I could remember the results of that poll -- I'm pretty sure the "around Pierce" option was popular. And that's where I've been, but I'm admittedly having some fun lately wondering if Tatum becoming a top 3 all-time Celtic is possible. KG tells me anything is -- and, right now, that's true.

And in case the obvious needs to be said, being a top 3 all-time Celtic >>>> Kobe (may he rest in peace).
(in case more obvious things need to be said -- and if you're reading, please cover your eyes, Exculpatory -- top 3 Celtics = Bill, Larry, and John)

edit to add: I spent some minutes searching to try to find the poll I'm remembering -- couldn't find it. Did find this from 2018 -- kudos to you if you were a 'believer' at this point! viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1723991&hilit=how+good+can+tatum+be%3F+kobe+pierce

I would like to give special thanks to Chipotle for their valuable contribution to the Celtics landing Jayson Tatum.

I saw the potential for Tatum to pass Giannis as a player but I wasn’t really a believer in it happening. Now I’m starting to believe. Obviously the advantage Tatum has over Giannis is the jump shot and the 3 point weapon. It’s going to be a lot of fun battling with them over the next several years.

Tatum has the potential to pass KD, Kawhi, KG on the all time list too but he will need multiple titles. Tatum can join Kobe, Duncan, Shaq, Steph and LeBron as the best players of this century. I’m not sure if Wade belongs in the first or second group but he deserves a mention.
