It looks to me like, given that this year is a sh-t sandwich, he's running back the top end of the roster, but doing a mini Process at the bottom end where he gives a bunch of young guys a shot. Optionality I guess?

I would love to get rid of Oubre, but it's clear he's made his value known: he creates his own offense when Maxey and other star (Embiid or PG) are getting smothered, but also he's selling out on getting rebounds. That's valuable on a team that is allergic to rebounding. There aren't any real wing options in his pay/value range out there who goes after rebounds at the same rate as him.
He seems like a good guy as a person and I keep rooting for him, but he makes just as many losing plays as winning plays for us. We rely on him entirely too much.

On top of this, he's on the first year of a max contract at age 34.
No one is gonna touch that contract unless they're certain he can play and his recent play is not just a bad stretch

But just reading the tea leaves it feels like the Sixers plan is to do neither, kind of stay the course and it's just "We'll see what we can salvage for this season, but we see the writing on the wall for this season, so let's run it back next season and hope Embiid stays healthy and returns to playing like an MVP, hope PG stays healthy and returns to playing like a star, hope Maxey takes another big leap, hope McCain is fully recovered from knee surgery and plays a big role, hope we can re-sign Yabusele, and maybe we can contend next season."
Seems like a plan that has infinitesimal odds of working in their favor.
I don’t know if Morey could survive dumping George for cap space. They need a 25 year old star to play with Maxey, and Embiid playing would be more of a bonus. But they need a young guy who can play 90% of the games and co-star with Maxey. However, trading PG doesn’t really open up a path to get that guy anyway.
I don’t see the Sixers getting a guy like that via free agency. But all-stars like Donic, Fox, Towns, Siakim, Mitchell, Lillard, etc were acquired via trade. I would rather move PG and hang onto movable contracts and picks. The best way to move forward would be to wait for an actual star or potential star to become available by trade. PG contract is going to look worse as he declines and his price rises to $60 million at age 38, so something more trade able would make sense.
Maybe if a Scottie Barnes, Zion (not sure how much they would like him), or a player that OKC, Cleveland, Houston, etc can’t afford to re-sign in a situation like Harden with OKC becomes available. You assume guys like Anthony Edwards or Paolo will never become available, but most stars end up getting moved at some point.

Then build around Maxey and the young talent while tanking one or two years.
I felt like GS was our best shot at dumping PG.

You can't get anything for Embiid and PG right now anyway after how this season has gone.
The only hope is they play well and play often the rest of the year. Then trade opportunities may open up in the offseason to fully embrace the rebuild.

I'd trade Eric Gordon + a second for Oscar Tshiebwe if we're going after two-way guys. Play him 10-15 minutes a game with the intention that he goes after every single shot that comes off the rim on both sides of the ball. All time great rebounder in college and it has been translating to G League and the small sample size of NBA games he's played.

Man, how I would love seeing a last minute trade moving George to Atlanta for some of the assets they clearly want to move. I know it's not happening, but they're the one team that has seemingly wanted to make a move that hasn't.

To me it seems pretty obvious what the plan is, or at least should be, in the immediate to medium term.
By the end of the day: Trade Drummond and Gordon. Multiple reports have stated multiple teams are interested and even if they get nothing back but expiring salaries it's still a win.
By the end of the week: Get Edwards and Butler on long term rookie deals.
By the end of the season: Make a decision on the viability of the current setup.
The obvious question is whether Embiid can play multiple games in a row without knee issue flaring up. The less obvious question is the Xs and Os. When Embiid plays the offense is mainly ISOs and two man games while the other three or four players stand around waiting for a chance to shoot. It can work, but it's very reliant on exceptional players making difficult shots because the offense isn't generating enough easy ones.
The last few weeks without Embiid there's been more pace, energy, ball movement, and player movement. It's generated more easy shots, but struggled at the end of games when the defense tightens up because the active roster just doesn't have the raw talent.
How Nurse could really earn his money is if he can figure out a way to get the best of both. If Embiid keeps missing time or when he's in guys like Council and Oubre go back to being nothing more than 32% three point shooters, it's absolutely time to restart. If Embiid can stay on the court and the offense is able to generate good looks for everyone, including Embiid, and as a result they can cause at least a little bit of trouble in the playoffs, then sure, once more into the breech.

The NBA doesn't step in when the Mavs trade Doncic for a first rounder and Davis, but they step in when they trade Caleb Martin and gave up no picks.
It's honestly comical at this point.

Did the league office just force us to trade another second rounder? Really?
Sounds like Caleb wasn't fully healed and the deal would fall thru for a failed physical unless we upped our offer. Mind you AD is hurt and apparently Dallas was fine with that and Lakers didn't have to pay jack.

Doncic is hurt too for that matter. Oh, and Butler agrees to an extension 30 seconds after the trade is completed. Wonder if the NBA investigates that for tampering. Somehow I doubt it.

Looks like Caleb's twin is also on the move. Traded to Phoenix alongside our former pick Micic and a second for Nurkic and a first.

Maybe I'm just over-sensitive to this stuff; but if you go to ESPN's NBA home page our trade of Jackson is the only tagline that just states what the Sixers gave up which makes it look like we got taken or paid to dump Jackson. Every other deal, even minor ones the taglines listed something from each side.

You guys realize before trades are made the teams talk and ask about the injury statuses. Clearly Morey didn't give an accurate description of Martin's injury.

So much for that. Hunter is headed to the Cavs per ESPN. Bang Bang Georges Niang headed to ATL alongside LeVert and 3 seconds.
