These are the breaks of the game. One team had an identity, a certain strategy and executed it. And had three shots hitting the goalpost. The other team had great individual talent, insane athletic gifts and couldn't figure out how to play. One team was aggresive, another was not. In the end, luck helps the daring.

Awesome.

Jordan never fully understood basketball. He had the lowest basketball IQ of any NBA "superstar" in history.

This man.

I'm just numb right now. At least my Oranje get a MUCH easier route to the semi-finals, but I really wanted to see an African team in the quarter-finals, especially with Drogba in it.

I'd agree that it was just an incidental contact if Sio's foot was already set, but he was stretching his leg and unfortunately the result was a trip.

That wasn't even a stretch and was more of Sio just running behind him. Samaras initiated contact with his wind up. It's not like it was some kind of tangling of the feet or a poor tackle attempt.

Guys bump into each other in the box often a lot worse and it's not a penalty.

Ran as in run over? What?

He put pressure, he had no idea Samaras was winding up for the shot. That's fair play, you're entitled to that as a defender. There was nothing blatant or purpose about that on the defender's part.

That is irrelevant to whether unfair contact was made. It was a foul.

It's a clear cut obvious penalty. I'm genuinely at a loss as to how anyone could argue otherwise.

Sadly, yes. I wanted CIV to win, and my immediate reaction was "Sio you idiot" instead of "Samaras you cheat". The replays supported that.

Edit: also note that the CIV guys were not screaming at the ref, but staring at each other in horror. The only guy shouting was GK Barry, and only to distract Samaras, not at the call itself.

You're entitled to your opinion. You're seemingly cool with letting the refs decide a game, I am not.

Worse have happened in the box all World Cup long that went uncalled, fans who are neutral(Which many of us are) have a right to be boned about the call.

Inconsistent reffing ruins everything.

The referee would be deciding the game if he hadn't called a blatant penalty in the box. You can't just swallow your whistle because it's the last minute.

No one is saying he cheated anything, its a bang bang play. Just the defender did not run into the shooter, the shooter went for a strike and the defender was behind him trying to make it legally harder on the shooter.

I think his left leg definitely stretched.
