Lmao okay bud. Really showed me. I guess the difference between Keldon Johnson fading into obscurity and Herro becoming the next Doncic is one assist per game at age 23.
But damn, let's take that at face value. What elite company Herro is in! He must have an elite skillset as a basketball player, right? So can you please tell me one basketball skill Herro is elite at? Just one.
Holy smokes people are down bad in here.
Uhh its pretty obvious he's an elite volume shooter. 1 of only 14 players in the NBA to get off 8+ 3PA per game. He had the 6th highest 3-point percentage out of that group. He also led the league in FT%
First off, 15 players (technically 16, Louis King with 1 GP) took 8+ 3PA - another strangely arbitrary number choice of yours that leaves off players like THJ (7.7), Markkanen (7.7), MPJ (7.3), McCollum (7.2), Harden (7.2), Haliburton (7.2), Bane (7), and Vassell (7) who all shot better than Herro from three. But that's neither here nor there.
How are those 15 players getting their 3-point attempts? I think we can agree that self-creation matters here, right? Nobody is calling THJ, Bertans, Hield, or any other guy who stands in the corner and waits for a pass a star.
Player - 3 point attempts/3 point percentage/percentage of 3-point field goals assisted.
Steph Curry - 11.4/42.7%/59%
Lillard - 11.3/37%/51%
LaMelo - 10.6/37.6%/65%
Klay - 10.6/41.2%/89%
Donovan - 9.3/38.6%/48%
Tatum - 9.3/35%/64%
Simons - 9.1/37.7%/68%
Vanvleet - 8.8/34.2%/59%
Hield - 8.5/45.8%/89%
Randle - 8.3/34.3%/75%
Doncic - 8.2/34.2%/21%
Beasley - 8.1/35.7%/85%
Rozier - 8/32.7%/65%
Herro - 8/37.8%/70%Herro is essentially a spot-up merchant and is more in line with the Beasleys and Hields of the league than Dame or Doncic. Diving into Herro's shooting a little further, this tracks. His 3-point shooting ability plummets the longer he has the ball in his hands, i.e. when he has to create for himself. After 7 dribbles, he shoots 34%. After holding the ball for 6+ seconds, he shoots 30%.
So I'll grant you he's an elite
3-point volume shooter (he's not elite inside the arc) with the qualification that he's only an elite spot-up shooter. He isn't elite when he has to create for himself. If this is his single elite skill, then he is much more like your Duncan Robinson than any star in the league.
The free throw shooting is certainly not an elite skill because he can't get to the line. At 2.7 tries, he attempted fewer free throws per game this year than he even made the year before. If this dude can't get to the line at all I don't want to hear anything about him being an elite free throw shooter.
Look, Miami loves overpaying one-dimensional shooters. But it's plain to see why other fans don't get excited about this guy, right? His most elite skill essentially makes him a fringe but eminently replaceable piece on a good team. Don't get me wrong, every squad needs a good spot-up shooter to go stand in the corner. But there's absolutely no reason to believe Herro will develop into a star.
Is he an elite playmaker?
Is he explosive off the dribble?
Is he extremely fast in the open court?
Is he a great defender? Is he even an average defender?
Is he a great self-creator? Does he have the footwork and dribble moves to get to his spots?
Is he extremely strong and capable of bumping defenders off?
Is he a great rebounder?
Is he elite in the post?
Does he have great counters?
Does he have incredible court vision?
What is this dude great at, other than spot-up shooting?
