Why would they offer 10 million per year if the next team hasn’t even offered 7 million. He can’t shoot so no one wants him cause he isn’t starter material. N btw, the jazz are stupid for giving Exum that contract. They bid against themselves.
To be fair to Utah they paid him what his going rate should probably be and it can be a challenge to find guys who are willing to sign in Utah. I am not sure the Jazz are in the position to jam guys up all the time. I kind of feel like Boston will do the same thing with Smart that contract is probably a good basis for a deal with Marcus. Sure you can make him play on the QO or make him take 8-9 mil and have him be pissed about it or you can tell him that this what the market says your worth and we can do 11 mil a season.
Smart should sign a 9 million per contract and kiss where Danny walks or he can simply fade in to obscurity. Non so many team have asylums for mentally ill players. He got to wait until tha SAS thing Isn’t done
The ‘19 Celtics starting 5 will drown teams on the scoreboard at a moment’s notice, all the way until we reach the Finals.
We won’t even take a game from GSW without Smart causing mayhem off the bench. When we were healthy this year, sans Hayward, Stevens was clinical with his use of Smart. They turned the tide of multiple games we found ourselves trailing.
Irving / Rozier / Brown can’t check Steph / Klay, and would be unthinkably lucky to offset that discrepancy on the offensive side. If we can’t bring Smart in to at least keep ONE of these guys quiet, I don’t love our chances.
No one will ever convince me that we are a better side without Marcus in some capacity, just needs to be at the right price. If he took 8mil per I’d sign him for a decade.
So were Wyc, Danny, and Brad hurt and disgusted when Smart turned down an extension last year?
Bwahaha--Marcus bet on the market and lost.
And no, he's not intrinsically worth 100x what a doctor or teacher or the majority of us make in a year. He is paid millions because of the the NBA market dictates. Not worth twice what Baynes or Morris makes anyway.
But I hope he does get his money--in a S&T for Leonard.

Can he stop KD? If he can’t he is not that useful if he can he deserves Bruce Bowen kind of money. He can’t ask for more than 10 millions in a stacked team and that’s because Boston owns his rights, otherwise he can’t get nothing better than the MLE until he decides to get a bigger contract for a **** team.

No one can stop KD, but that responsibility lands far more on Brown, Tatum, Morris, Semi and Horford - than Smart. If we’re talking about going into the Bay, with our guard lineup consisting of Irving, Rozier and Wanamaker - with Brown starting at 2 - GSW’s guards won’t even break a sweat trying to score.
Call me crazy but I think our short term window (ie next 2 seasons vs GSW) is getting more airflow if Smart is a Celtic.
I've never understood the over the top Marcus love some people have. But if he comes back on a qo I won't complain. Cheap money for a, very good defender and bench guy who makes some nice plays, but I'm not going to need a, tissue if he decides to leave. Probably the most frustrating player since Rondo
Smart is not worth more than 9-12 mils. 12 is by far the MAX, I would give him and I think it's hella lot for a guy who's one of the worst players on offense in the LEAGUE among guards. He can think he's worth 30 mils per...
Good assessment:

I was told 2 days ago they were working on ironing out a few contract details, and today a source says Smarts camp is saying they haven't heard from Boston. That's not true. It's all posturing. Deal will be done soon. Only way it doesn't is if Ainge plans on getting him to SA or Chicago as a piece in a S/T for either Kawhi or Butler. If that happens Ainge will get Marcus a nice deal like 1/15 or 2/28
Hay, ddb. Really appreciate your insiders info...but can't believe nobody noticed you're in 2017 Jimmy is in Minnesota, not Chicago.
But yes, i can realy see S&T Smart, Morris and Yabu for Butler deal. Thibs would love Marcus, and only question for C's is that there are 3 starting position for 4 of Butler, Hayward, Tatum and Brown. But should be enough minutes to go around.
There's only one statistics that's important: who won...Bill Russell

Unless you're a surefire star, the salary you get speaks more about the current market than a player's actual value to a team. Just take a look at the 2016 FAs. Some of those guys who got 50-plus-mil deals would be lucky to get MLE or BAE in 2018. I'd give Capela at least 20M per if I didn't know it would be dumb to bid against yourself. He still doesn't have a deal done either.
Another factor to consider is Smart is playing for a contender who already has two, soon-to-be-three, max players. Ainge just can't be handing out 60 for 4 years when he's well aware of its tax implications even if he thinks that's what he should be getting.
I personally think his value/impact to the Celtics is closer to Iguodala or mini-Draymond Green than Bowen or Tony Allen but I spent all of last year arguing his case so I won't argue further.

Sorry to bug you for deets but any idea if it’s short or long term hah? I feel like we won’t get him at a bargain for a few years but it’d be pretty sweet. Hope he doesn’t just take a 1+1.

$12M is a lot to pay for a player that nobody else is offering even the vet minimum for (though in large part because they know the C's will match).
At this point they have him for a year for $6M, so even a 2-year deal at $12M/yr will be paying him the equivalent of $18M for that second year.
Celtics are either waiting to see what they have to match since it was he and his agent”s choice to test the market, they want to see if KL trade materializes to determine his salary in sign and trade or they want him to take QO so his salary is off the books next year when they have to pay Terry and Kyrie.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."
