Re: 2022 Season Thread
When Demeco Ryans walks out the door to go to Houston, what are the options to replace him at DC?
I've heard some talk that they might look in house again and promote Holland.
Kyle has been in the league for quite awhile, so he has a lot of connections. Maybe they look at external options. To that point, its a good thing that this year's coaching cycle has dragged a bit, as there are still a lot of available guys out there. But McDaniel just netted Fangio to be his DC in Miami, so he's not an option.

That sucks. I was really hoping for a Fangio reunion.

Not a done deal with Fangio.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
I heard that Quinn is making almost $5 million as DC in Dallas, which is one reason he stayed there, unless he got a real good HC situation.
Supposedly Fangio was offered the same deal in Miami.
Payton was apparently demanding $20-25 million a year, which is just crazy. He has a great track record but he did it with one of the greatest QBs of all time. When Brees wasn't around, did he have good seasons?

6 months if it's just a repair which barely has him ready for training camp.
If it's TJS he's probably done for 2023 altogether.
He already has a so-so arm so any loss of zip on his throws could end up being devasting for his long-term prospects.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
Shame, his cinderella story may already be over.
I wonder if he sensed the pressure and tried to get the ball out, expecting to get it out before being hit or didn't sense it at all.
If the former, a real loss, having a guy stand in like that instead of flinching and pulling back the ball and protecting himself and the ball for the hit that was coming.

Woah, that's a very interesting development.
If the 9ers can manage to replace Demeco with Fangio, that would be a big time coup.
Kind of makes you wonder if Fangio hasn't signed with Miami yet because he's waiting to see if SF comes calling.

Well Payton may be going to Denver after all.
So he could go to Denver instead of Miami.

Seems pretty unlikely he'd go back to Denver as an assistant, especially after just getting fired there only a year ago.
SF has requested interviews for Steve Wilks and Chris Harris to replace Demeco. They are rumored to have interest in Fangio, but I have yet to hear any of that to be verified.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
Losing DeMeco hurts but it was expected. Now my concern is how many of our most talented staff will he poach away. Just finding a new defensive coordinator won't be the full extent of our hiring process; Ryans is well-liked and respected and could pull a significant number of assistants away from us.

Internal options are Holland, Undlin (secondary coach and passing game specialist), and Bullocks (safeties coach). External options are Fangio, Steve Wilks (Panthers interim coach and former defensive coordinator for the Browns), Brian Flores (Steelers senior defensive assistant), Kris Richard (Saints defensive back coach and former Seattle defensive coordinator), and Marquand Manuel (Jets safeties coach and former Falcons' secondary coach while Shanahan was their offensive coordinator). They also requested permission to interview Chris Harris (Titans' passing game coordinator).

Re: 2022 Season Thread
Joe Woods would/should also be considered a legit candidate. Niners had the #1 ranked pass defense in 2019 and Woods was our secondary coach that year. He left to be the Browns defensive coordinator in 2020 but he was fired last month.

The salary cap is going up to $224.8M next year, a $16.6M jump. This should help us a ton retaining guys and a contract for Bosa

They may need a reliable backup for Trey if Purdy is shelved all season.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
Yeah, coming close to matching that type of offer for McGlinchey would be a hard pass.
As I mentioned earlier, using the franchise tag on Mike isn't the worst idea. Provides some continuity for the young QB, and gets you down the road to where more replacement options become available while not committing long term to a middling player with clear weaknesses and consistency issues.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
Fangio to Miami afterall.
Apparently SF wasn't that interested, probably because Kyle wants some continuity on the defensive side of the ball. Bringing in Fangio would have shifted the D from a 4-3 to a 3-4 scheme.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
Moving this team to a 3-4 scheme would have been a bad idea. They have been drafting guys for the 4-3 scheme for years so to change now wouldn't be ideal. I am hoping we get Wilks to come here, he also could be someone who gets a head coaching chance in a few years.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
Steve Wilks has been hired as our new DC to replace DeMeco Ryans. Wilks was the interim head coach for the Panthers this season and was head coach for the Cardinals in 2018. He has been a DC for both the Panthers and the Browns. His specialty is in the secondary as he was defensive backs coach with the Panthers, Chargers and Bears; in 2015 he was the runner-up to PFF's Secondary Coach of the Year award. And if there is one area of our defense that could use an upgrade, it would be our secondary. Wilks also runs a similar 4-3 scheme and is known to get aggressive on obvious passing downs.
And some more good news in that while the Texans had interest in our DL coach Kris Kocurek for their DC position under DeMeco Ryans, Kocurek will remain with the Niners. He may get a bump in salary or an upgraded title, but having him back for another season is very good news given that there will likely be some additional defections as DeMeco fills out his staff in Texas.
