Stevens isn't a top 5 coach. :)

Well that's something that can be argued both ways because it's hard to quantify exact ranking, but most believe he is one of the best coaches in the league.

Popovich, Spoelstra, Kerr, Carlisle, Quin Snyder, Mike Malone, Taylor Jenkins, Monty Williams, Thibs, maybe McMillan, maybe Vogel, not including Nurse because some would call that homerism, but he should be. Stevens is thoroughly middle of the pack.
Everybody is losing their freaking minds. Nutbars and wingnuts have infested this forum. We've become a public lavatory without cleaning staff.

From an optics standpoint I think this is a strong move. Stevens is really likeable. He's the Masai of head coaches. Everyone just has good to great things to say about him and like being around him. Ainge is kind of acidic and whiney.

Isn’t that what Pat Riley did, or am I remembering wrong?

danny ainge did the same

I don't remember Ainge ever coaching. I believe Riley stepped up to GM at some point before moving up to POBO

Please Boston sign Kidd or Lloyd Pearce as head coach. Talk about a team falling apart at the seams. Stevens is a great coach, why would he want to be FO guy? Just pay him whatever he wants.

Can we scoop up Marcus Smart while they're in disarray?

I wonder if this also signals that Brad had some moves he wishes were made that Danny didnt care for, but front office ended up liking?

A bunch of your choices who you rank higher then Stevens are highly subjective... Snyder, Jenkins, Williams, Thibs, McMillan, Vogel.

Tomorrow on NBA conspiracies...did Brad Stevens successfully pull a Butch Carter/Jason Kidd type of hostile takeover of the front office?

I'll put it this way. You get four or five kicks at the can and no matter how good you are, you can't get over the hump. At some point it's the coach or GM that needs to go. Brad Stevens is too good, you want to keep him. Basically, Ainge is Dwayne Casey in his coach of the year season, he has to go for the team to try to get over the hump. Ainge had countless opportunities to try and do that and didn't do it. Just as Casey did without any effort at change.

So he's toast.

You cannot keep a GM that obviously has such a low risk tolerance, when you're close.

Can't get over the hump? He brought them a title.

Then he rebuilt the team, and got them back to the ECF multiple times.

He was easily a top-5 executive in the league.

Wait what. That's actually quite the landing spot for Brad.

I meant...going from head coach and getting the promotion straight to head of basketball operations within the same organization...while being employed as the current head coach.

More often than not...you might see a coach move up to being GM or interim GM or being both head coach AND GM...but to skip the GM step...that doesn't usually happen.

POBO is a made up position that has come around in the last decade, it is to give a promotion when there is no where to go up. With staff getting bigger, they needed more roles to fill out staff.

and once one team created that role other followed, to prevent poaching and most teams dont stop in way of promotions. Next role to be created will be some SR POBO.

They just extended him, so they probably didn't want eat his contract but wanted to shuffle the deck. So Ainge gets bumped, Zarren stays as the primary strategist, and Stevens gets a FO gig.

Probably Danny Ainge. Or Red Auerbach.

This is the unofficial start of the Jason Tatum watch/pre-agency, even if his new contract is just about to begin.
"I definitely knew he traveled, but I didn't know they were going to call it. That was one of them situations in which a great player made a move...and they called the call. And I was like, 'Oh, man, there is a God.'

This is less about Brad's "promotion" than it is about Ainge being fired.
