I doubt this reporter is making things up, but the problem is that by shielding the source you shield the possible to motive or bias of the source. Is this a Philly scout talking to Drummond who took a $29M haircut because he flaked out when the Cavs asked him to move to the bench? Is it a scout on a team that has some interest in trading for him trying to knock the price of acquisition down?
Those are the types of problems you have with anonymous sourcing.
Top level reporters don't run with an anonymous remark unless they've heard the same from other sources. Chris Mannix/SI deserve the benefit of the doubt unless someone is aware of him writing hit pieces or publishing completely baseless rumors.
There's likely some nuance to this story but we'll only hear about it if someone decides this is worth writing a book or long article after the dust has settled and careers, relationships, and reputations aren't at stake.
For instance, simeone like Chris Fedor might know more, but he's not going to write something while the team can cut him off.
