I just hope some our youth take big steps this year to make signing a expensive older vet move the needle.

He was even mentioning coming here as a 2nd alternative back when he signed his last contract as well if i remember correctly.

As a Piston fan, how much would you offer him? 3 yr? 4 yr?

30+ yo signings last 2 summers. Draymond will be 33.4yo when FA starts next summer.

player/age when FA started/contract

harden 32.9 $68.6M/2
tucker 37.2 $33M/3
batum 33.5 $22.5M/2
rubio 31.7 $18.4M/3
McGee 34.4 $17.2M/3
Mills 33.8 $13.3M/2
Paul 36.2 $120M/4 (4th year not guaranteed; $90M/3 guaranteed)
Lowry 35.3 $85M/3
DeRozan 32.0 $82M/3
Conley 33.8 $68M/3
Rose 32.8 $44M/3

To me, Draymond is looking at Lowry and DeRozan level *at most*. Curve ball is both those players can score and play with any team. Draymond can't shoot/score, and his success depends on a very specific team build.

Would not love to have Draymond for 35 mil a year for multiple years.

I get it, but this seems like a perfect fit for this young piston squad who're still trying to figure out how to win in this league.

I appreciate this observation, Jay Mike.

I agree to a certain degree.

I think, within the context of source of income, a lot of folks want to get paid "more than anything", in the short and long term. Or in this context, I'm assuming "more than anything" = "professional basketball wins"?

Whats your POV on the primary objectives of sources of income?

Put it like this; Draymond isn’t going to leave money on the table to stay in Golden State on a discount.

IDK, he might fall off a cliff after this season

Agreed... I'd be surprised if he left money on the table, and why should he?

Steph: $48m
Klay: $40m
Wiggins: $33m
Draymond: $25m

He's already taken a discount for GSW twice, to help them afford their stacked teams. So they owe him for that. Then he's helped to deliver 4 titles for them as an integral part of their team. So they owe him a bonus on top of what they owe him for taking those earlier discounts. Get yo money, Dray! :P

First and foremost this is just speculation with an agent leaking something to try and draw attention:

I would prefer something like 3 years ~$70-75 million. I doubt we’re in contention though.

On a contender, dray is a fantastic ceiling raiser. On a non contender, hes a sink hole. Hell probably get double t'd early in a few games just so he doesnt have to play the rest of the game.

Didn't he go to Michigan State? Maybe this makes sense after all as a sort of homecoming

If Cunningham and Ivey turn out to be a star backcourt tandem, and Draymond is willing to take some kind of pay cut, then why not?

Now if Draymond wants that max contract at his advanced age, then no thank you

I like the mentoring fit but I’m not buying that this anymore than a negotiating tactic on Draymond’s part.

I think aside for the money for the sake of money thing Draymond is also looking for some financial validation of his worth as a player who’s value isn’t always mainstream obvious. A max payday, but specifically a max payday from a team entrusting him as the guy to help build a culture and take a developing group of young players to the next level would go a long way in that regard.

Him being a max contract player in Detroit would be pretty awful for the development of their team.

This isn't a legitimate report but Draymond is from Saginaw so he may want to play for his "hometown team". I don't think he would be good for them unless it's on a much smaller deal as a backup vet.

With that said Monte Morris and Kuzma are both from Flint and I think I remember Kuzma saying he grew up rooting for the Pistons so I wouldn't be surprised if he wants to play there at some point which would be a better fit than Draymond.

Guy already has 4 rings and is looking for a big payday and could get that with his home state team. Why wouldn't he consider that?

Again, a false narrative is being made of Draymond and his demand for a MAX contract. He's asking for the maximum allowable extension to his current deal. It's still a lot of money and more than the Warriors want to give him, but a far cry from a real MAX deal.

But if the Pistons give him a 3 year contract at big money that rolls off by the time Ivey is up for his extension, that's an option for him.
