Pelicans aren't shopping Zion. This is about how the internally view Scoot... It also likely buys David Griffin a year or two before they look to fire him if the Reset to Scoot from Zion as franchise pieces.

Seems to me from what we are hearing from the Blazers, it would hinge a lot on Zions medicals and headspace/desire to be in Portland. Dame seems onboard. The other hinge piece is what the “assets” are along with the pick. Simons and Nurkic or Simons and Little + some other young guys maybe… I could even potentially see them throwing in 23, but if they’re asking for Sharpe, it’s gonna be a quick dial tone.

I'm also not sure if they would trade Simons for him because of his health issues. Trading three for him is already a huge (but acceptable, imo) risk. They would need Simons to upgrade elsewhere. I think if they put in Simons they would ask for more back.

According to the ESPN trade machine, just Nurk straight up for Zion works currently, I believe due to his PPP and Nurks salary matching Zion’s pre-extension salary.

ESPN trade machine is broken for now, showing last season's salaries.
But I think your proposal works.
For next season, Zion makes 33.5m. We'll need to match up to 125% of that, so send at least 26.8m of outgoing salaries.
Nurk makes 16.9m next season. Little 6.2m. Knox 3m. Keon 2.8m = 28.9m

Fwiw, it’s not just the ESPN trade machine it works on. Tried it on the my iOS NBA Switch app and it worked. Could be both aren’t right tho.

I don't think those are working correctly. Since Zion signed a rookie scale extesnion the "poison pill" is in effect. From the CBAFAQ
the player's trade value for the receiving team is the average of the salaries in the last year of the rookie scale contract and each year of the extension. The sending team uses the player's actual salary when calculating their total outgoing salary, and uses the current-year maximum salary in place of the (unknown) maximum salary for a future season, if necessary1.

Zion is making $13.5 million this salary year. He signed a 5 year extension with $194.3 million in guaranteed money. If you add those and divide by two you get to $34.66 million in incoming salary for us.

In other words Nurkic for Zion works for the Pelicans but for us it doesn't work since we're taking back a lot more salary than we're sending out and don't have a TPE anywhere close to being large enough to absorb that amount.

The obvious solution is to add Simons to the deal, but that would also require the Pelicans to add value and contracts. Alternatively find a third team to balance value and absorb some of the difference in salaries. Orlando is the obvious choice since they seem to covet Simons, have some cap space, two firsts and attractive contracts.

Simon's to Orlando for #11, Harris (13M unguaranteed), and Isaac ($7M guaranteed).

#3, Harris and Isaac to New Orleans for Zion.

New Orleans saves a boatload of money and gets the player they covet.

Orlando gets the shooter they need.

Portland takes a risk with Zion. That's a lot of money and a whole lot of risk. I wonder if the Blazers can squeeze an additional player from New Orleans? I'd love to have Jones & Murphy if there is a way to get them.

Re-sign Grant & Thybulle (maybe Winalow)

#11 - Dick or Lively

Lillard / Johnson / (Dick)
Sharpe / Thybulle / Williams
Grant / Little / (Winslow)
Zion / Watford / Walker
Nurkic / Eubanks / (Lively)

The bench is still weak. Perhaps Portland can sign some FA's if they get Zion. Not holding my breath though.

Major risk. If Zion ends up missing the same amount of games as before, there is nothing to stop
Dame from still asking out, and the team will have thrown away a top 3 pick for nothing. Portland
has a top 3 pick in a 3 man draft and this type of desperation is the only way they can lose

Agree.

The fact that CJ had to publicly call him out (and we know more than anyone how mature, intelligent and composed CJ is), demonstrates some serious attitude concerns about Zion.

I'd rather risk that a young and hungry elite prospect doesn't pan out, then an all-time talented but perpetually injured and lazy player.

Zion has played 114 games in 4 seasons. That's literally 35% of games over a 4 year span. That is attrocious and unbelievably concerning. I'm not ready to roll the dice.

Honestly, Sharpe isn't what the Pelicans need since they have Trey Murphy, Dyson Daniels, and Herb Jones and add Scoot. My guess is 23 and or future assets with salary filler would work.. pels likely try to move the salary filler to other teams.

Zion trains in Oregon at Nike headquarters, I think a trade to Portland and being around the Nike headquarters more would help Zion. We all know when Zion is on the court he is worth WAY more then the 3rd pick and future picks. That man is in a league with very select few in the NBA when he plays. Medical assessment would be huge by the Blazers doctors and should seal this trades fait one way or the other imho.

Yep, and I think the Blazers FO feels the same. But with it now looking like Scoot is back to being the heavy favorite to go 2, this may all be a moot point.
